I hope CJ, Toussaint, Nunge, Patrick, and the freshman use this as a “redshirt” year so they can have 3/4 years of eligibility remaining.

It’s a free year regardless. They will all have the same eligibility next year as this year.

What hasn’t been made clear is when they have to declare it, if at all. As in, does Pat have to indicate he’s a freshman again next year or does he just get a super senior year?

Pat is going to break Jess Settles record for most years playing Iowa Basketball.

Yea. I’m not sure how this process will work and do they need to declare it and when?

Just declare it immediately since no one is ultimately obligated to stay for the extra year.

The NCAA is giving players this year free. The question that will need to be addressed by all schools is how do they go forward with recruiting in the next two to three years. It has not yet been addressed on the number scholarships schools will be able to have in both football and basketball. Roster management will become huge.

Everyone in college basketball will 'use' it. I'm guessing the majority don't end up using all that eligibility. Most of the remainders end up grad transferring, and a select few will spend the extra year at their current schools. You can only have so many scholarship players at one time, that hasn't changed. Letting every player stay would wipe out upcoming recruiting classes.

See Dale Jones. He got hurt and got a redshirt, but was only meant to be a 2 year player. Had he stayed with the team for that extra year it would have meant cancelling an incoming freshman's scholarship. In a year when there's an extra, like the one riley till had last year, then great, let a walk on or a guy that got a bonus year take advantage of it. Darius Stokes got to take advantage of that for a year as well.

Many players are going to use that extra year filling an immediate need somewhere else, and most will simply graduate and start their post college lives. For many that extra year would make number 6. For love of the game some will ride it out as long as they can, but when you're 23 or 24 and still in college you eventually just want to start the next chapter.

We've had coaches with less tenure that what Jack is going to have...
The list of coaches with more than 7 seasons isn't that long
Rollie Williams (14 seasons)
Pops Harrison (8 seasons)
Bucky O'Connor (only 7.5 seasons before he died)
Lute Olson (9 seasons)
Dr. Tom Davis (13 seasons)
Steve Alford (8 seasons)
Fran McCaffery (11 seasons)

14 coaches with fewer than 7 seasons and 1 with exactly 7 seasons.
