Refs Did A Good Job

For once they let the players play and did not call unnecssary fouls. Don't know why the Big Ten does not have more referees like this. In contrast the television announcers were terrible, talked about everything except the game they were announcing.
They didn't say a word when Bohannon hit his three. That was terrible.

Why could Gus and JJ be at MSU but no one in Madison?
What a joke.

The announcers were horrifying. I watched the first ten minutes of the Gonzaga game wondering when their announcers were going to start talking about the 1980s, but they somehow managed to stay interested in the game. That's the difference between a professional crew and a play-by-play guy enabling a geriatric spaz to gush about his career for two hours.

D.J. Carstensen was one of the refs again tonight. He's gotten some flack on this board, but I agree he's a good one.

You are right. I can't think of even one bad call! They did a great job! Hopefully we will see more of them in the future.

Saw plenty of ads for Vitale's book, though, which was very important.
Fox/BTN has taken the torch from ESPN, atleast in college basketball. Didn't think I would ever say that but it has happened. Tired of ESPN constantly pimping things like vitale's book, for example, or their other programming and missing actual game time to do it.

Agreed. Fox Saturday afternoon game is awesome, they make it feel like an event. Their college football coverage is better too

Definitely better than many games we’ve seen this year, that’s for sure. There were a few questionable calls that were hard to tell from the TV angle. I can’t think of one 50/50 out of bounds call that went in Iowa’s favor.

There was one pass in the second half that Wisc just threw out of bounds. Everyone starts walking down to Iowa’s goal and the refs signaled Wisconsin ball. That was laughable, at best. Another was Wisconsin’s overturned back court violation. Hard to see, but the only Iowa player in the area of the pass, was nowhere near the direction of the intended pass. I couldn’t see an Iowa player touch it. Last one I remember was Connor’s bounce pass to Luka that missed by four feet somehow. Ford kicks at it, but it’s nearly impossible to see on TV if he kicked the ball. Garza and Fredrick (I believe) both indicated that the ball was touched, but ruled Wisconsin’s way.

Again, fairly evenly called game. I’m sure Iowa had a few calls go their way too. I don’t know what was different tonight with Davison’s play that didn’t warrant a flagrant one as opposed to when it did versus Michigan. Clearly he was going after CJ’s face which CJ’s face was behind Davison and the hoop. No way Davison should be given any benefit of any doubt either.

And there were zero replays of any of those , while Vitale and the other dude discussed their favorite color

was also a time when a Wisconsin player drug his pivot fot like 3 feet with a hop thrown in and no travel.

That reminds of Garza’s travel call in the first half. I didn’t see a travel on that particular play. I did see Garza receive quite a nice shove as he received the ball though. Garza, probably got away with a walk later in the game, so it very well could have evened out I suppose.

Agreed. ESPN, if not doing a game with one of the blue bloods, focuses on a narrative or various issues going on in college hoops and very little time on the actual game. If you are a fan of either team playing, you might as well just have the sound off. I'm sure they have research that says this is what people want, but my opinion it makes for terrible broadcasts. I don't care to hear about Vitale's books or what Dan Dakich thinks about anything other than the game going on in front of me. Give me Bardo or Robbie Hummel or Jimmy Jackson any day of the week. They at least know who the players are on both teams.

Agreed. Just so much unnecessary chatter that didn't involve the game. At least 3 different infomercials about his books, a bit about his early announcing days, a bit about him being with the Wisconsin crowd. Was almost like an on-air eulogy.

Give me a Jim Jackson/Gus Johnson or Kevin Harlan/Clark Kellog any day of the week. Hell even Dakich/Benetti is light years above what we saw last night.

Agree, for the vast majority, they were part of the game and didn't "effect" it. A couple here and there each way--which really should be expected--but solid effort.
And Vitale has done, and continues to do, good things for cancer research and that is obviously wonderful, but during the pregame when his voice was scratchy and giving out, I was really hoping it was going to go completely and we'd be given a reprieve....no such luck.

I watched that replay like 5 times after the game. Still couldn't see the travel. Dribble and jump stop.

I’ve found Vitale unlistenable for about 20 years now. But, to be fair, the “pimping” of his book was for the purpose of raising money to fight cancer. Say what you will about ESPN, they are devoted to the Coaches Against Cancer cause.

Harlan might be my favorite announcer in all of sports

anyone watch the women’s game? it was a rugby match.... talk about letting them play 😳 but it was called consistently.... both ways.... never seen so many standing 8 counts in a basketball game

He’s actually one of the few I liked seeing do games. I thought he’s had some questionable calls over the last year or so, but I think he gives Iowa the benefit of the doubt more than anyone else.
I nicknamed him "The Garza Killer" a while back (don't remember exactly when), but now I don't have the disdain for him like I did.

I used to think he was one of the best. But he’s really regressed the last few years.

I’m talking not just against the Hawks, he’s lost something. It’s hard not to notice him in any game he does. And then you can really focus on him when Iowa’s not playing.

I also like Carstensen, who calls as little as possible. That only is bad if you have a team like past MSU teams that then decided to play a BB/hockey combo. If you watch a Wisky game, it isn't just a coincidence that over half of the plays, where someone is either laying on the court or holding their face or crotch, involve Davison.

Dickie V has been awful for almost a decade, and needs to do something else.
