Wow Penn St's Dredd had the most blatant travel before he made the 3 to send the game to double OT w :09 left.

27:30 in this video. he establishes a pivot foot then shuffles his feet to get away from Keegan's defense and hoist up a shot.

Obviously a terrible game. A million reasons that Hawks lost. Penn St played well. Will be heavily gambling on them at home for rest of year.

Disappointing the refs missed something this obvious at such a critical juncture.

of course it's disappointing...and on the ensuing shot Kris Murray drug his pivot foot...it happens...on the first play with PSU shooter this is called a double coverage area...what both officials(trail and center) are watching and officiating is the defender to ensure they don't miss a shooting foul in that critical moment...what's obvious to you is not necessarily to them and the exact same thing happened on Kris's release...that is the primary responsibility on this play is to not miss contact on an airborne shooter...the question would be...if both officials are looking at that PSU shooter, why isn't one of them looking at the shooter specifically? Because of the juncture and crossroads of that spot, both are going to officiate the defender first...just a reality of that specific play....when they review this play they will also conclude what I just explained that they "missed the travel" and what could they as a crew done better to get that play correct?

Officiating in PSU game wasn't great, but it was very evenly called IMO. I like that crew, which lets the guys play (although that often works against Iowa). You are definitely right on the 3. I thought it looked funny live, but didn't look at it again, after the huge downer of losing this game, which was a "must win"...

Should have fouled before they got the opportunity to hoist a 3 , play FTs with less than 15 seconds left up 3, Izzo would have fouled, heck any competent in game couch plays the FT game there.
That might have been too early to foul to avoid the three. I think that only makes sense with less than 10 seconds left. Otherwise you're just giving up points.

You are probably right in what the refs were looking at in that moment. But man, if refs are reviewing calls/no calls after the games looking to get batter….well it isn’t doing anything for them, cause they suck game after game after game and seem to be getting worse not better!

It sucks, but there's a dozen other reasons for things Iowa should have been able to control on why they lost. Ultimately, this team never had a chance to be a top tier conference team without anyone that can actually rebound.

The only thing I'm sad about is this team will likely not be any better next year because at least Keegan will no longer be here. Fran will have to get somebody through the portal or they may not even make the NIT next season.

Excuses are for zebras. Not humans. Overturn the call retroactively and let Iowa win.

Thank you.

Exactly. A new excuse after every game.

Like plugging your finger in one hole of a sinking ship with many holes........

This is the right answer. He hit the shot with just under 10 to go. There wasn’t an opportunity to foul without the risk of it being a shooting foul from 3.

I have seen Izzo do it time and time again under 20 seconds , I mean if You foul with 13: PSU has to make the FTs as well as hope Iowa most likely JBo misses and still come back down the floor again. its Math at the end of the day . Multiple cards have to turn as opposed to 1 shot going down to tie.

Was Keegan fouled on his tying shot that got the 1st OT ?Did seem some contact . Just asking,

Probably, but the refs were probably too shocked that Keegan was able to do that.

That tip in showed incredible hustle, basketball IQ, athleticism, and reaction time.

Technically, if you want the game to be called as the rules are written, it would result in a series of out of bounds plays.

Game was evenly called throughout, but I agree that looked like a travel. It was a very physical game, a very B1g type of a game. This is how this league has officiated forever. Fran’s inability to roster construct properly for 12 years is my main bitch with him. I see the hopeful logic of trying to zig when everyone else zags, and be THE offensive team in the league, but at some point you need toughness at multiple positions. Sometimes, even though our skills are superior to other teams, the bigger, stronger teams make us look and play soft.

That's even a travel in the NBA! About as bad as the kid from Minny with those step back 3's and Izzo's multitude of guards that do this as well. I remember a game circa 2014 in Iowa City vs. Sparty where a guy took about 4 steps plus a euro step en route to a deciding hoop, unbelieveable this can be missed by 3 refs.

That said, when your guards are 0-18 from the floor you made the mess and have to deal with it. THAT said, simply foul as soon as ball was inbounded and play the FT game for 10 seconds, as a youth bball coach, I'd foul EVERY. SINGLE. TIME if clock was under 15 seconds. There are too many scenarios for the trailing team to tie or catch up. First FT needs to be made, second could be made/missed then trailing team needs to go for quick steal or foul team that's ahead. Iowa has several excellent FT shooters so I would go this way..but not Fran! We have two of the most engrained policy football and bball coaches there is.../rant.

Harrar traveled all game long, so the fact they 'missed' both of Dread's on the shot to force 2OT was not surprising in the slightest.
OMG! You nailed it. I seriously doubt that Harrar touched the ball once last night without traveling. Go back and review it. He shuffled his feet on rebounds. He shuffled his feet on shots. Hell, he shuffled more than a Vegas blackjack dealer, and Harrar wasn't called for it ONCE!

I wrote a post a few days ago lamenting the rough style of play allowed in contemporary basketball, AND the ignoring of the rules when it comes to traveling and carrying the ball to the extent that this game of quickness and finesse is often more like rugby or football.

Last night was one more example of all that. But make no mistake: Iowa lost that game by its pathetic play and equally pathetic coaching. The refs were equally poor for both teams, overall, so this isn't to blame the refs for the loss, although a travel call on that PSU three would have been right and welcome.

It was comical how after he got a rebound he took 3 steps all while swinging elbows and they called a reach in foul on Iowa.

Love how we (players coaches fans) point to one missed call every time we lose a close game......need to start controlling the the controllable (rebounding and defensive effort) and working through the rest (poor shooing, poor officiating)........

Pure incompetence not to foul. I saw that shit from Lick too.

I think a large majority of players (men + women) travel with the 3 point shot. A lot take a "little hop". It looks like a jump stop; but it happens so quick, it's hard to tell. But I agree, that PSU guy traveled.

I agree but our poor rebounding does make this strategy on the questionable side...

Happens. Every. Single. Time.

They also missed the times Harrar slugged everyone in the post lol.
The one I 'liked' the most was his gathering in of a loose fought-for ball underneath his own basket, thus setting his position and one of his feet as the pivot one, but he literally does a hop-turn of of his whole body, and thus both feet, to turn himself at the basket before taking it up and making the bucket.

In what world is that not a travel!?

Should have not come down to that

Initially I was tempted to say the game shouldn't have been close anyway because Penn state sucks. But then I caught myself and realized Iowa now sucks as much as Penn State in the conference.
