Is it just me or are the refs taking a beating this weekend at Big 10s?
Coaches are really on them.

Manning & CO were complaining every single match and going into their faces.

So true. He is the whiniest coach most annoying coach ever. So sad that Neb that was the one to beat us for 2nd. I have a lot of respect for almost all other Big Ten coaches.

I did see a lot of bad calls over the weekend to be fair. I thought the call that went in their favor to decide the Pinto/Braunagel match was particularly bad, but I was there sitting right in front of Mat 2 where it happened & haven’t watched the replay so maybe I’m wrong? Probably didn’t help I was with a bunch of Illini fans. What were others thoughts on that one?

It also blew my mind when they called Rogotzke for a slam and then raised his hand when Rutgers couldn’t continue. Like did they forget the rules so bad that they straight up raised the wrong guy’s hand? Then they were trying to get both guys back to the center but couldn’t find Rogotzke after making the mistake so eventually just raised Rutgers hand with Rogotzke nowhere to be found.

I didn’t see the actual slam, just looked over in time to see Rutgers guy stumbling around like he really got his bell rung. The aftermath of the slam call was nuts though

there was a match on the backside that i thought was particularly crazy and i didn’t see anyone talking about it. in the 3rd period of the braxton brown and braeden davis match, brown got a takedown and 3-4 seconds went by and then the ref waived it off. brown clearly stopped trying to improve after the takedown was awarded which impacted the position.

later in the match there were two separate exchanges that the ref completely forgot about the neutral danger rule and didn’t count at all

The only thing I could think of on the latter exchange was that both were close to being in it simultaneously, for which I hope the rule (written or unwritten) would be there should be no count.

That was one of my two takeaways from the weekend related to refs.

1. When the refs decide to interact with the coaches, they should do it near the head table in the middle of the mat. Every time Nebraska had an issue, it was all four coaches yelling at the same time at one ref. I get both Tom and Terry can get out of hand too, but I don't see the refs going to their corner. Nebraska was way out of hand.

2. The edge of the mat stalling calls are still just so inconsistent. I saw many wrestlers (not just Iowa) backing away from the guy in an effort to circle back into the mat and still got called for stalling. My wife (no pics) asked what they were supposed to do to avoid stalling, and I had no answer.

I had a conversation with friends this past weekend. The problem is the coaches have too much pull on the rules committee. In high school, the ref can toss a coach following two unsportsmanlike conducts.

In college, they interpret it differently, thus coaches misbehave.

eems typical Big Championship rhetoric. The refs are doing a fine job other than not wanting to call stalling as usual.
I agree. We had a few matches we could have been called more. All referees need to come to Carver to learn how to call stalling.

I have seen several instances this year where the official didn't start a danger count when the criteria had clearly been met. The most egregious one I saw was where the wrestler slowly worked his way to putting his opponent in the danger position, but the official didn't even start a count, but stopped the action for potentially dangerous for the wrestler who had worked so hard to get his opponent to the danger position.

Also, the biggest issue I am seeing is the officials are allowing wrestlers to continually back up to the edge without calling stalling, but then they will hit the more offensive wrestler for backing out when they are trying to circle back in, rewarding the stalling wrestler for backing to the edge, but circling in at the last second to basically push their opponent out of bounds. Angel is particularly bad in this regard.

How is that different than any other dual or tournament for them?

It seems that Nebraska's typical BS has been covered. I replied before reading.

Kemdawg lost to hall in similar situation. He thought the ref was counting for hall, but was counting for Kem.

i think they got 2 team points taken.
I know Illinois coaches were speaking with the head of officials after the pinto /braun match wondering why they were allowed to have 4 coaches in the refs face by the table. They were told it would be reviewed and sounds like they lost a team point due to it.

Tom Ryan f bombed and got in the faces of any ref that walked by a couple of times this weekend. Cops came over the one time when it lasted over 10 minutes. That was after the slam call.
