Hi guys

New to the board, longtime member on TOS but my subscription ran out and I declined to renew as I feel Rivals has very much surpassed them.

First post, but I figured I would share with Hawkeye Nation for those curious about Ott's future.

My brother in law used to frequent south central Nebraska on business almost monthly, actually lived close to Jeff Ashby before he built his new house next to the ball fields in Aurora.

He was back in town and spoke with Coach Ashby and some other alum in the area this week as well as people who know Dan & Sheree, sounds like it's almost a certainty now that Drew won't be granted another year of eligibility and that he's turned his focus on getting ready for the next chapter of his life. Too bad for the young man, he would benefit from another year here at Iowa. Makes me wish we wouldn't have played him in the last five games of 2012. Our Hawks could really benefit from him setting the edge in 2016, and a shot to repeat for West Champs!

I guess we will have to take your brother in Laws word for it

I hope this information turns out to be incorrect but it smacks of truth.

I realize that rules are in place for a reason, but the NCAA is so screwed up. They need to use some common sense on some of these cases. If he was looking for a 6th year I would understand the decision more, but he is looking for a 5th year. This is why I never get my hopes up when a decision rests in the hands of the NCAA.

Kind of like the grad-rule transfer?? I never understood this rule, i realize why its in place, but the only reason a player should be leaving an institution is due to coaching change or graduation. I realize they graduate, but they should still stay at their school they committed to. Instead you have guys leaving all over place, after the NCAA finals, its like a "free agency" in CBB and Football.

They've completed their "student" part of the obligation, why not reward that?

Well I get it they graduated, but it states they have to go somewhere where their "major" is. Basically the school they are at currently doesn't offer it and they have the option to move on. I just think that is such a lame excuse. Yes the graduated from that school, but they also signed a letter of intent to compete for that school (regardless of class completion).

Majority of the guys that use the "5th year" are using it for stock. They are not going to classes or hardly going. They waste a scholarship and most don't even finish the program. They just go until they have to and then quit. I don't think that should be an option. If their coach leaves and they want to leave, I'm okay with that. But just to transfer for no reason is a joke.

They are transferring because they want to, not for no reason. They completed what they signed up for: a college degree.

Not exactly their fault their coach didn't play them.

I'm for rewarding them for achieving the goal we created this system for.

If Ott is rejected it would be by the B1G first then he can appeal to the NCAA.

If B1G makes the decision then it's left up to the conference and not the NCAA ? That seems strange.

Easy to handle this, play them as a true freshman

KF was quoted recently as saying signs were positive so far, so I think I'll wait for an official announcement. But thanks for playing.

What makes the transfer loophole bad is what makes a grad program different. Have a hard time believing what JR ended up taking was drastically different then what could have been taken at Iowa.

Believe me guys, nothing would make me happier than to see Drew get another year of eligibility. Can I know for certain that he won't? Absolutely not. I certainly hope he does!

My OP's purpose was simply to pass on information I leaned from those in Drew's community regarding his future at the University of Iowa. Even those that passed this information on to my brother in law were only speculating based on how they felt it would be decided, they have no way of knowing a final resolution to this yet, either.

We all want what's best for the student athlete and also our football program, both of which I think would benefit greatly from Drew being granted an additional year of eligibility.

I hope the committee makes the right decision. No, I am not a troll, but I don't blame those that call me that. Having only one post and bearing bad news is never good for a first impression.

Go Hawkeyes! We'll all know soon enough.

Keep in mind if we are so fortunate to get Drew back which is still a big IF regardless of what anyone says there are still some questions. First will he be fully recovered during the season in order to return to his previous level? Second could he re-injure the knee or possibly blow out the other during the year? It does happen sometimes.

My point is everyone assumes Drew will be picking up where he left off and there will be no set backs. Boy I hope so but want to be realistic too.

Regardless of the sincerity of your post, these situations rarely go the way of the player/school. So it was a crapshoot from the beginning, and nothing has really happened to change that. I think most folks figure it's about 99.9% chance he's done at Iowa.

But it ain't over until the Fat Lady sings, so far she's just eating a turkey leg and knocking down some Jack Daniels backstage..........................

Just get rid of that restriction then. All grad transfers approved.

I guess my question is, how is he recovering from his surgery and injuries? Even if he does get another year, will he be healthy enough to play ?
Excellent question. I'm speculating (no inside info) that he may not be sufficiently recovered in time for the first game or two.

Which, it seems to me, could be another reason to grant him the extra year. Trying to be as objective as possible, if the intent is to do what's best for the student-athlete, Ott's case is a no-brainer. He deserves his fifth year, and given the same circumstances, I'd say the same for a similar young man at Michigan, Ohio State, or anywhere else. So we'll see how this comes down, and that will tell us a lot about the true intent of this committee.

I have also heard from a former Hawk that is friends with Drew that things are not looking good for another year. I think OP is probably right, but ultimately we will have to wait and see.

Ferentz should just pay the NCAA officials with some of his bonus money. A good investment as it could help him gain some more bonus money.

I don't claim to know anything about the medical 5th year process but it looks to me like it would be pretty cut and dry, he either played too much to be granted the 5th year or he didn't.

I'll wait until we see word from Kirk or Drew before accepting any rumors from this peanut gallery.

In this situation, a player can't play in more than 30% of the contests, nor can he play in any contest in the 2nd half of the season. If he played in 5 games, he will most likely not get granted a 5th year.

There are always exceptions made. Similar to the rules for getting through the NCAA clearinghouse. If you don't make it through you have the right to appeal and they take other factors into consideration. I would imagine he has the same chance hear and that is why they are trying.
