Remember when car audio systems were a thing?

I remember buying a used (probably stolen) under dash pioneer 8-track stereo. It came with one 8-track, "The best of the Guess Who". Loved the stereo and loved the Guess Who. One of my all time favorite albums. Went to a electronic show and bought some no-name Triaxial speakers. It was awesome.

Still have my Alpine 7618 preamp and Alpine EQ and 6 CD shuttle. Powered by 2 Alpine amps, one for mids and highs, Boston Acoustic Pros. The other for 12 inch Kicker sub in one of my Mustangs.

Used to by CDs based on quality of studio recording. All the flagship lights, display and EQ buttons are still pristine for a unit built in Japan 1991. Credit card remote needed to be replaced over the years but easy to find Alpine remotes that work.

I have an Alpine 2 channel (now bridged to mono) Mosfet amplifier that I bought in 1993 installed in my car. MRP-T130 is the model number. My bet is it probably could use new capacitors, but in over 30 years of use it's never given me a reason to do it.

Absolutely amazing that it still to this day works perfect. No powerhouse, most of the time it was running a single SAS Bazooka tube sub. But it sure has been a fine performer for me.

Wire a piece of audio equipment correct, don't push it beyond what it's capable of...should last a LONG time. And it has.

Also another +1 on the pioneer deck. My deck screen changed colors on cycle and got an after market shift knob (5 speed 😱) that changed colors as well.

My car battery died once a month, thank god for autozone warranties.
 
My Alpine can stop at each song when searching cassettes. It has a smooth loading and eject mechanism. Unmute is a gradual increase in volume no matter how loud you have it. The little things…. I always use the remote to not wear down the buttons.

Then I had a Bazooka in the trunk. I took out my first loan to build my credit buying this when I was 16.

Here it is...I didn't mess with the contrast so you can't see the red fiber dot chicklet indicator but each one works. Boston Acoustic Pros are behind the doors with tweeters mounted on each door. An Alpine amp mounted behind each back seat that pulls down to the trunk. CD Shuttle and Kicker Solabaric in the trunk.

Just the biggest subwoofer boxes imaginable. Everything just rattling. I went to high school with a guy who would keep ear plugs in the car for any passengers that requested them. Also knew another guy that had a competition car that would literally blow your hat off if you stuck your head in the window. So dumb. We were such assholes

My Jeep was stolen in 1992 and when the popo found it they had installed a mac daddy stereo system including a bazooka tube. And, just in case you want to protect your vehicle from theft, the thieves who took my jeep also had "the club" in there so it wouldn't get stolen from them. They also had a bucket of cleaning supplies. So it was well taken care of. The insurance company wasn't happy they removed all 5 allow wheels and put some low profile wheels/tires. At the time my rims were nearly $1k each.
 
I had a knock off Alpine look alike head unit, a cheap JVC amp/EQ and a couple smallish home stereo speakers in the hatch.

That setup thumped louder and harder than any of my buddies high dollar, high end systems.

Current Mark Levinson set up in our Lexus is the best stock system I've ever had.

My old SC400 had an OEM Nakamichi head unit and amp. And 4 inch speakers in the doors and the rear deck. Along with a single 10" sub. Such a strange set-up. It sounded good though! That was a great car.

Dude, that is old school AWESOME! I remember I had an Alpine deck w/ EQ in my 85 Firebird with 2 10" kicker subs in the trunk/hatch pushed by a Rockford Fosgate amp and Alpine 6x9s in the rear.

Thanks man, I got a 2nd 7618 in case I ever need it for parts. EQ has subwoofer level control. I've gone through several CD shuttles both Mbus and AINet because over time they lock up or stop working but the preamp has never failed on me. I used to have Rockford Fosgate Punch 300 amp (600 watts) built in the USA with a 12 inch Punch sub but went with the 10 inch Solabaric because I wanted tighter bass and actually wanted to use my trunk. Have another set of Alpine amps sub and Boston Acoustics in storage I was going to install when I got a SUV but never did because I don't want to lose the display controls, sounds, seat warmers etc. I've always wanted an Alpine 7909 with the copper cage or a McIntosh system but as mentioned I'm not rich, lol.
 
30 disc changers in the back, enough wires running around the car to wire a house.
 
Alpine had a 12 disc changer I think, also an adapter so you could connect 6 changers if you wanted. Have to go with high end wires and gold plated monster cables.

I've always found the debate about cables and wire to be interesting. I've had vehicles wired with heavy, expensive brands, and I've had them wired all-stock outside of subs. I never noticed a difference. They all sounded great.

Heard the same from others, even that stock speakers sound just as good as high fidelity models...have seen a distortion demo with low and high end cables.

@Ferentz_Fan you may find this video interesting. It's the engineer who designed the Alpine system in my Jeep. It's obvious the guy loves his job. He only designed the speakers and the amplifier, not the head unit. I wound up replacing it with a Sony this summer and it really brought the entire system to life.
