Does anyone see a resemblance to today's FIFA mess?
According to this link, there is talk about Europe, the US and some Latina American nations holding their own version of the World Cup as an alternative for the one in . . . wait for it . . . Russia.
I was inclined to shake my head when I first read this but think about it. Carter did it in response to the Soviet incursion into Afghanistan. Today it's Russia and Ukraine.
Add to that that it was the US behind this investigation and prosecution. And it was the US-backed Jordanian prince who was Blatter's opponent for the presidency. Plus, Russia was one of Blatter's strongest supporters. And one of the first things that Blatter did upon being reelected was to reaffirm the awards of the next 2 games to Russia and Qatar.
And finally, does anyone really think the US gives a flying F about soccer? I mean why would we care about - and invest so many investigative and prosecutorial resources on - corruption in what may be the only big time sport that can't seem to catch on in the US?
