Does anyone see a resemblance to today's FIFA mess?

According to this link, there is talk about Europe, the US and some Latina American nations holding their own version of the World Cup as an alternative for the one in . . . wait for it . . . Russia.

I was inclined to shake my head when I first read this but think about it. Carter did it in response to the Soviet incursion into Afghanistan. Today it's Russia and Ukraine.

Add to that that it was the US behind this investigation and prosecution. And it was the US-backed Jordanian prince who was Blatter's opponent for the presidency. Plus, Russia was one of Blatter's strongest supporters. And one of the first things that Blatter did upon being reelected was to reaffirm the awards of the next 2 games to Russia and Qatar.

And finally, does anyone really think the US gives a flying F about soccer? I mean why would we care about - and invest so many investigative and prosecutorial resources on - corruption in what may be the only big time sport that can't seem to catch on in the US?

If UEFA, CONCACAF and some of all of the South American countries held their own event it would be far better than the WC. Hell Europe and SA is the WC.

Qatar boycott should be a no brainer. That thing is an atrocity

The problem with this is Blatter spread around so much money there won't be enough traction. It'll be very hard to get enough nations together to boycott something so popular. Personally I think the World Cup is far more important than the Olympics in most of the world.
Now, if Germany started the ball rolling that would be interesting.

I am suprised there is not more public outcry for the major sponsors to take some action already. Coke, Nike, Budweiser etc - if they were to pull away Blatter would be on his own.

I am still thinking about the Latina American nations getting together.

This would be good. It is ironic that a nation that really cares the least about soccer is the one making the biggest effort to clean up FIFA.
