Replacement for Lickliter

Anyone remember who their choice was to replace Lick? My choice was Dana Altman when he was at Creighton. He Ieft for Oregon after Fran’s first. I think he is a great coach….almost 70 % winning. He pounded Garza and company in the Dance. Anyway, just curious who you wanted or which names were being rumored.

I think so. I seem to remember an uproar from Arkansas fans about the hire, and then he backed out. At least that's how I remember it.

Remember how many people wanted Brian Gregory instead of Fran, but he went all the way to the NIT championship that year, so we went with Fran instead of waiting?

Gregory coached 12 more seasons and never made the NCAA tournament again.

This is my memory of it, too. Other than Altman there was basically nobody that anyone ever heard of that was a serious candidate. Thank God GB is not in charge of this hire.

Not just people, but the Iowa AD. Listening to Hawkeye HotSpot podcast with Rob Howe and Scott Dochterman this week. Iowa wanted Gregory but Dayton was in the NIT that year. Iowa offered but Gregory wanted to coach his team in the NIT. Iowa waited. Then, Dayton made the Final 4 of the NIT. Iowa offered again and said we need you now. Gregory said I want to coach the Flyers in the Final Four of the NIT. Iowa moved on to Fran McCaffrey.

I really wanted Tony Barbee who wound up at Auburn. I'm glad they didn't listen to me lol

Fran’s was a good hire and the right man to rebuild the program. He should have retired after he won the BTT.

Barbee was a name I totally forgot about! He was touted as a top recruiter.. But he only had 1 winning season after leaving UTEP.

I do know the Clemson coach, who was at Wright State, was looking into the Iowa job back then.

He would've been a pretty solid hire.
