An apparent bomb-rigged motorcycle exploded in a busy commercial area in Bangkok on Monday, killing at least 12 people near a site that has been a hub for political rallies and clashes in the past, police and news reports said.

Other details about the blast were not immediately clear, and there was no claim of responsibility.

The Reuters news agency quoted deputy national police chief Aek Angsananond as saying a “motorcycle bomb” exploded near the Erawan shrine, a popular shopping and tourist area in central Bangkok. The shrine also draws a steady stream of Hindu worshipers and others.

The area, also known as the Ratchaprasong intersection, has been a staging area for political demonstrations between powerful rival factions in past years. In 2010, security forces stormed the streets in a bloody crackdown against supporters of an ousted prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra.

A policeman and a rescue worker said at least 12 people had been killed, Reuters reported. The television network Thai PBS said its reporter counted 12 bodies.

Local media also said at least 20 people were injured.

Thailand has faced a series of conflicts over the past decades, including a sporadic Muslin insurgency against the predominantly Buddhist leadership. Clashes between political factions also have spilled over into violence and major disruptions such as occupations of Bangkok’s international airport.

The Thai military has effectively ruled the country since May 2014 after ousting an elected government. In April, Thailand’s military-backed government imposed tight rules on the size of public gatherings.

In February, a series of small blasts targeted a shopping mall in Bangkok, leaving one person injured. In 2006, four people were killed in explosions in the southern tourist area of Hat Yi.

CNN is reporting that police have found a second bomb and have sealed off the area while they work to defuse it.

At least 12 people were killed at a major intersection in Bangkok on Monday night after an explosion shook the neighborhood. The blast occurred in front of the Erawan Shrine, an important tourist attraction in the city’s main shopping district.

The Thai authorities placed white cloths over parts of bodies ripped apart by the explosion at the Ratchaprasong intersection, the same area where a protest that stretched for months was dispersed by the military in 2010.

Debris and at least five motorcycles were scattered in the intersection as dozens of emergency vehicles arrived on the scene.

Charoen Sida, 37, a security guard who was preparing to start a 7 p.m. shift at a shopping mall next to the site, witnessed the immediate aftermath.

“Everyone was screaming and running,” he said. “There was a huge fire coming from a motorcycle. No one dared to go into the intersection.”

An hour after the blast, security personnel announced that a bomb had been discovered in the area and was being defused. They shouted to a crowd of onlookers, “Get out! Get out!”

Thailand has been under military rule since May 2014, and a number of explosions have been reported since the army seized control. However, none have been this powerful. Many windows in the shopping mall were blown out.

Bloodstains reached the second story of one of the shopping malls in the vicinity, a measure of the power of the explosion.

The House GOP is demanding an investigation to determine what degree of responsibility Hillary may have. Trey Gowdy has volunteered to chair the proceedings.

My guess, and it is just that, is that the "red shirts" are feeling increasingly marginalized. This isn't "terrorism" in the sense that we think of it as Middle Eastern men... the Bangkok elite and the military have long been associated with each other, and the rural population (aka the "red shirts") is fed up. They win elections, but it doesn't matter as democracy apparently does not exist in Thailand.

It's pretty early but you have my vote for stupidest post of the day.
You lose sight of just how silly the GOP looks with their scrutiny of the Dems. And one more thing, sarcasm is the mainstay of this forum.

Are you new here??

Ok so you are not very good at sarcasm. Good sarcastic comments actually relate to the subject, yours not only did not relate it was not even close.

This thread's not really going anywhere serious so why not mention this now:

Man who go through airport turnstile sideways is going to Bangkok.
