Response to Tyler Cook's Commit

They are friends from playing basketball together came on the visit together.. Would love to think there is more there but no reason to think this is more... That being said I think he will be a hawk as well.

Another solid season and the snowball is going to continue to gain momentum. Exciting times to be a Hawkeye basketball fan.

If we can match last season's success I'll be quite happy. I think this will be a transition year and next year we'll start making more strides.

Really? We have a true center, two sr. point guards and a player who could, and quite frankly should, lead the conference in scoring if he's more selfish.
Combined w all this young athletic talent I certainly don't see this as a transition year.

Strides? Dude, did you see us under the guy before Fran? The one who got canned at Marian Cunningham University due to laziness? Strides. That's funny!

I said more strides. No need for the attitude.

I'd pump the brakes on any conference championship talks. We got a big piece here but guards drive the basketball landscape. The rest of the B1G is recruiting very well. No team wins a title without outstanding guards. Williams, Bohannon, etc. could turn out to be good in time but we are still largely unproven after this year. Fran landing a big time PG would change the trajectory of this program in a hurry.

Things are looking up, but I mostly agree with this post. I love Cook's addition, but maybe we are changing our expectations a little too much based on one recruit. The B1G has a bunch of teams with high expectations and really good recruiting classes. That said, it sure is great to see Iowa basketball generating excitement.

Dangelo russell was the best guard in the big ten (and the country)by far and that didnt lead osu to a final four. Yogi ferrell was the second best guard and iowa rolled indiana.

I didn't say they needed one guard to win it all did I? I said without a guard to drive the team, the bigs don't matter nearly as much. Duke had a pretty good point guard last year didn't they? How about UCONN the year before that? Michigan/Louisville had a pretty good guard court in 2013 right? If you can find me one team that wins championships I'd be shocked.

That's TWO years down the road and a lot can change between now and then. Just ask Peter Jok. I'm talking about an instant impact PG next year. We don't have one anywhere. Could one emerge? Sure. But at this point, not yet.

Iowa basketball is gonna get fun ... and it starts this season ... Love the recruits Fran is bringing in ... I expect big things from this year's team and while national recognition may have us under the radar, watch out because I think this team will make some noise.

Duke also had the most dominant player in the country last year in Okafor. They ran their offense thru him. Wisconsin played thru their front court. PGs matter but if you don't have an "elite " one you can work around it.

Wisconsin had very good guards. Kaminsky was arguably more "dominant" than Okafor

Our guards were good enough last season to enable White to make first team Big Ten. As much as I loved Aaron, he didn't do it all on his own.

No reason to think next year is a transition year. We're starting 3 or 4 seniors, 3 of whom were huge top 10 4* recruits for us. Other starter is a junior-also an important recruit for the Hawks. It seems that Hawks are just building and becoming progressively better, collectively.

Like all good programs, for the first time in a long time, we will have a number of what I think are going to be really good newcomers get a lot of quality time before they are called upon to be the impact players.

Dan I don't have the feel for Uhl. Hope you're right because that 5th starter is going to be an important indication of how the season might go.

I keep forgetting about Uhl. This team is loaded now and Fran just going to keep reloading going forward.

I understand where you're coming from but I find it hard to believe we won't get better with our guard play. Gesell is a good defender and runs the team well but he is still a below average shooter and not anything special when it comes to getting into the lane. Jok has been playing out of position IMO and is limited putting the ball on the floor. JO was JO.

We've added 3 slashers in Moss/Hutton/Willliams to a team that really had none. I think the SG position is much better the next few years offensively and defensively with added athleticism. Add in Bohannon who might give up something defensively to MG but is a much better shooter and that will let the offense flow a bit more rather watching MG pass up on an open look JB will want that shot. IMO Fran has done an unbelievable job getting a team with average guard play into the tournament the last couple years so I can't wait to see what he can do with more athleticism and better shooting.

Our defensive guard play hasn't been terrible. One of those guards was 1st team ABT. But I agree we are probably upgrading the guard talent. It looks like Jordan B is probably going to start on day one, in part simply because there aren't any other point guards. He may not be great but I'll bet a freshman year like Gessell's, maybe a better shooter and I'd bet the house a far better free throw shooter. A lot more experience and talent, if not size, to help offset some defensive break downs by Bohannon than had Mike G at the same point in his career.

You have to feel pretty good about the scoring ability of a mature group of Fleming, Ellingson, Moss, Jok and Jones. The odds are in our favor that at least three of those guys turn into real scorers.

Not getting expectations out of line with reality but other than size we are seeing what should be the most talented teams since the talent Alford wasted with coaching that might be comparable to good Davis teams.

2016-2017 will likely have some growing pains. We have yet to see any of our incoming freshman in a college game, I'd be very happy with 8-6 from Cook as a freshman, Jones has yet to play a game, and Peter still has a lot to prove.

It takes time to learn to defend and to learn to win. I love the potential of this group but the 2016-2017 season will be for learning IMO.

The thing about Cook is he already has a body ready for college ball...240 lbs. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he averaged 11-8 or so....I'd still be happy with your number though. Just don't think we'll see as many growing pains with this kid...

Finally a shot at B1G regular season championship?

To win a Big Ten regular season championship, I think you probably need to be top 5 nationally most seasons, or at minimum top 10. The last 5 seasons the Big Ten has had 15 different teams finish in the top 10 on KenPom, or an average of 3 per season. The mean ranking of the regular season champ was 5th nationally with 3 of the teams being #3 or better. The conference also had 3 #1 seeds in the tournament in those 5 years as well as 4 #2 seeds.

I agree a college ready body. Still has to defend without fouling, limit turnovers, pass out of double teams, play against bigger, stronger posts, handle the ball against post pressure, develop a go to move, and make free throws.

He'll be just fine but it will take time. He seems to use his left hand well and can finish. Very athletic and has the size. 8 and 6 is pretty awesome for a freshman and if we get that I'm a happy camper.

And by comparison the last three seasons Iowa has finished 25th, 28th and 19th according to KenPom. With the recent rise in recruiting success, and I don't mean just Cook but McCaffery, Wieskamp and McCaffery, it seems fair to say that Iowa is approaching the level where we can start hoping. Hoping, not yet expecting, to have that wonderful year where it all comes together.

2015 saw several players that, though not ranked terribly high, are all coming in with very high ceilings. Same with 2016.

It's a great time to be a Hawkeye fan.

For the record, I'm not saying we don't have talent here or coming. I think it's all coming together in a big way. I just caution you to look at how these other B1G schools are recruiting. Almost all of them get a Tyler Cook level player or better each and every year if not more than one. That's why it's so damn tough to win this League if you're not a big name school.

It's so hard, that I believe our last regular season title was 1979.

The past couple years we've had tremendous talent in our frontcourt. But tell me how far we might have gone with a Tyus Jones, D'Angelo Russell, Trey Burke or Tyler Ulis on our team. Wings/Posts are great but they cannot take over a game consistently like a top flight PG. Until we get that or someone develops into that, I don't consider us a B1G title contender. There's no shame in that. Spare me the Wisconsin example too because they've had very good guards and two NBA post players with freak skillsets that could almost play as guards.

I agree Cook may average more than one thinks his first year, at least pre-B1G. Consider who has come into Iowa with a better post game his first year?- anyone? With his bulk and athleticism and the work ethic I'm expecting, he'll eat lesser competition for lunch. The learning curve will come vs the better competition in the B1G.

Cook I'm guessing will average 8-11 points and 5 or 6 boards. I'd say 25-27 minutes. Kid can really play. Think he will emerge as an elite player his sophmore an junior year. He has talked about interviews that iowa loves his game and feels like they can see him develop into a pro weather that is one, two, three or four years. Not saying he's a one and don guy but I would not be shocked if he's a three year guy. I don't see the basabe or jarryd cole comps, Montrezl Harrell and brandon dawson are much better ones for cook. He's likes brunner the way he boxes out and gets position, that's probably the best iowa comparisin for cook.he will be a very good player at iowa.

I think this is the learning year for the freshman class, just as last year was for Uhl. The year after, 2016-17, the ones remaining in the program will be expected to step up and keep the program moving forward.

The great thing is we are all excited about the potential of everyone in the program and it's been a long while since we could say that.

We all believe these kids will excel, it's just a discussion on when. The future classes after 2016 each have a key player in place too.

None of us have a crystal ball, but I predict it will be a fun ride.

If only we played in a conference that is basically a 1 team conference for the past decade or 2.... (Looking at you clowns)
