Have no idea whether the OP represents the truth or mere speculation but sometimes I don't get the level of dislike among Hawk fans for Pat Fitzgerald. He has some carry over from his playing days including his intensity on the sideline which can rub people the wrong way but like him or not he has an intense passion for the game. To my surprise he has started to develop into a pretty decent coach even though he can take Northwestern only so far. I didn't think they looked very good when we played them but they just keep winning and remain ranked. We could have worse rivals IMO.

I can't speak for other fans, but my dislike for Fitzgerald is his practice of instructing his players to do extracurricular actions designed to cause injuries to Iowa players.

He is an EXCELLENT coach IMO. Anyone that talks about Iowa's recruiting disadvantages should look at what NW has to do.

I actually like Fitz. I was picking on the Iowa fans' tendency to dislike Fitz.

Fitz does a great job at NW, knows how to finish games which Iowa struggled to do for 2010-2014, and has to recruit against ACT scores...I think Iowa fans are pissed that he has our # for a few years until recently....

I am surprised by this but tip my cap to him. Fitz is a tremendous coach that so many outside of the B1G never mention. If he had the resources and advantages of Bama, OSU, Texas, USC, etc. he would have a couple of national titles already.

Seems like a coach that genuinely cared about his players. Has emotion and the players feed off it. Glad they had a decent season this year. Of course I'd like to beat them by more than 30 next year.

For one, he has always maintained an inappropriate chip on his shoulder regarding Iowa. His "H-on" stems from an injury he suffered against Iowa in his playing days that ended his season. Knowing his paranoia, he probably believes it was intentional.

Actually winning close games is a new development for NU this year. They too struggled with those the past few years
