I was fortunate enough to be in attendance at the Fieldhouse the game where Rick Mount lit up Iowa for 61 points. Insane. The second he crossed half court he a was threat to score. He had absolutely no conscience and would shoot from anywhere at any time. I want to say that he launched 47 shots in that game. It was exciting and nerve wracking to say the least. Fortunately the Hawks were just beginning their historic run to an undefeated Big Ten title and prevailed 94-88. The return game that year to Mackey was even more exciting, maybe the most frenetic in the history of Iowa basketball. I couldn't find the stats, but the Hawks "limited" Mount to somewhere in the 50's and squeaked out a 108-107 victory.

The whole tribute to Mount at the game yesterday was the culmination by Purdue officials to entice Mount back into the fold. He is very paranoid of the media and apparently has burned a lot of bridges. Strange guy. The announcers kept mentioning that he had an estranged relationship with the school. I was curious and came up with this article from the Indy Star that sheds a little light on it.

Didn't he score 61 in the 108-107 game?

You are correct. Mount must have been in the 50's at home. After beating the Boilers twice that year, I remember Ralph Miller saying that he didn't care how many Mount scored, as long as they stopped everyone else on that team.

Is he a prima donna or just some kind of weird dude? He seems to have a lot of issues with a lot of people.

Some people say he is a nut. I have no idea what Purdue might have done to make him angry but it must have been pretty bad in his mind. It will be interesting to see what happens from here now that he got to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes defeat his team again in person. He must be the king of holding a grudge.

His speech at half time certainly left a lot to be desired. For not having returned to Mackey in 30 years, he didn't mention anything of any substance.

Watching/listening to him it almost seemed to me that he has a great fear of public speaking or anxiety about it which is pretty common. A lot of people are not comfortable in the limelight.( Which brings to mind the Rush tune....)
