Henderson had some real pop in his bat, too. I’m pretty sure he also leads the record book in leadoff homers. The A’s would start a lot of games leading 1-0 after Henderson would rip a homer leading off the game.

He is the all-time leader in runs scored (2,295), stolen bases (1,406), and leadoff home runs (81), among other things. Henderson retired with 3,055 hits and 297 home runs, and he helped the 1989 Oakland Athletics and 1993 Toronto Blue Jays win the World Series.

I was just about to post this. 81 leadoff homers is crazy. He will probably never be passed in 3 categories. Even with the new emphasis in generating stolen base opportunities I cannot see him being passed.

Favorite story someone quoted John 3.16 and He said Ricky don’t want hear about John hittin 3.16, Ricky hittin 3.30

Legend
Another one was Rickey noticing John Olerud wearing a hard helmet instead of a soft cap. Rickey went up to him and said, “ I used to play with a guy that did that also”. Olerud said “Rickey.. that was me, we used to be teammates”.

That is a great story, but it isn’t true. Olerud has confirmed that a trainer with the Mariners made this one up. He was a trickster and liked to make up stories while joking around with the guys in the clubhouse.

Put this in another thread, this spring I read Rickey : Life & Legend of an American Original by Thomas Bryant. Really good biography. Rickey was a lot smarter & complicated than what he's given credit for. The amount of mlb talent that came from the Bay area in that time period is insane.
