He is the all-time leader in runs scored (2,295), stolen bases (1,406), and leadoff home runs (81), among other things. Henderson retired with 3,055 hits and 297 home runs, and he helped the 1989 Oakland Athletics and 1993 Toronto Blue Jays win the World Series.Henderson had some real pop in his bat, too. I’m pretty sure he also leads the record book in leadoff homers. The A’s would start a lot of games leading 1-0 after Henderson would rip a homer leading off the game.
I was just about to post this. 81 leadoff homers is crazy. He will probably never be passed in 3 categories. Even with the new emphasis in generating stolen base opportunities I cannot see him being passed. He is the all-time leader in runs scored (2,295), stolen bases (1,406), and leadoff home runs (81), among other things. Another one was Rickey noticing John Olerud wearing a hard helmet instead of a soft cap. Rickey went up to him and said, “ I used to play with a guy that did that also”. Olerud said “Rickey.. that was me, we used to be teammates”.Favorite story someone quoted John 3.16 and He said Ricky don’t want hear about John hittin 3.16, Ricky hittin 3.30
Legend
That is a great story, but it isn’t true. Olerud has confirmed that a trainer with the Mariners made this one up. He was a trickster and liked to make up stories while joking around with the guys in the clubhouse.Another one was Rickey noticing John Olerud wearing a hard helmet instead of a soft cap. One of my all time favorite players...perhaps the most productive leadoff hitter ever. I was fortunate to be able to see him ina game in person. RIP.One of the most fun players to watch when I was growing up.
RIP in peace.
Makes me feel like I'm on borrowed time. 🥲How does a guy like Ricky Henderson die at 65? It’s not fair. Life’s a crapshoot.
