Riley Mulvey

I continue to reject the view that “thug” has a black connotation.

Maybe it went through a generation-based transformation, but to me, “thug” brings up a connotation of the mafia.
I agree. Like the creep crotch grabber from Wisconsin 2 years ago. He was white. Still a thugh.

Both he and Big O don't blow you away but when they get in there they are both decent enough that I wonder why they don't get a few more minutes. Josh has been really helpful at times like the BTT. For how little they've played I've actually been surprised with how they look when they do get in. It's hard to get going when you don't play regularly. Hope O is back soon, we are gonna need him for the big ten grind. The minutes and intensity of the top guys isn't really sustainable

I believed last year, and continue to believe this year, that the presence of both Mulvey and Ogundele on the roster has slowed the development of both. Basically, I think there is a limited number of developmental minutes that they have been sharing, thus hurting their ability to grow as players.

To this end, Ogundele being out with an injury might be helping Mulvey. If there's a post player that is going to get minutes to spell Rebraca, Mulvey knows its going to be him. I think that changes his preparation, his attitude, his ability to improve, and his overall performance.

Moving forward, I hope Fran commits to one back-up center, and allows him fully develop his game.

I believe the origin of the term thug derives generally from Asia,... and India in particular.
Thuggee. Pierce Brosnan played a British soldier impersonating as a thuggee in the 1988 film "The Deceivers", directed by Iowa's own Nicholas Meyer of Star Trek fame.

thug

thŭg

noun

  1. A cutthroat or ruffian; a hoodlum.
  2. One of a group of professional criminals, devotees of Kali, who robbed and murdered travelers in northern India until the mid-1800s.
  3. A member of a confraternity of professional assassins and robbers formerly infesting India, chiefly in the central and northern provinces.
American Heritage Dictionary

It should depend on how he's doing in a game, if he impacts the game, provides defense and rebounding, then yes more minutes. if he looks lost in the first few minutes then no, but the more minutes he gets hopefully he will get more confidence in his playing ability. Rebraca needs someone to come in and allow Filip to get rest and not play every minute. Riley's time will be in the next 2 years.
How can you say this when you never see him play? JO has given ok back up minutes. RM was ok in a back up role last night. If that can be done against michigan tcu when don't they warrant a fe minutes here and there.

Just think of all the people that said Filip would never be a Big Ten center. He might not be first team All Big Ten but I think he will be second team.

Riley has not played poorly in his limited appearances. I think he threw up a wild three once, but I'll bet that Fran Con 4 is deterring recidivism on that one.
The 3 point fake, blow by dunk against Dickinson was ****ing amazing.

Off the top of my head, Olymuri of Rutgers is a lot better defensively, Purdue Giant Eddey is better statistically and Dickinson of Michigan has had better career. I don't see how you come up with 2nd team for Rebracca. I would say Rebracca struggles vs Bigger true Centers both defensively and offensively. There is no doubt that Rebracca has improved dramatically and his effort is off the charts.

As to Mulvey---it is Fran himself with his PT saying that Mulvey is not ready and not worthy of even token minutes. Fran doesn't seem to care much about defense which would be Mulvey's stronger point at this time.
Disagree about the Rutgers guy. Plus, Filip is surging.

Eddey is probably your first teamer. Since the award is not supposed to be based on the season and Filip is ahead of Dickinson in every category but scoring, and that difference right now is less that 4 PPG I think Filip is having a better season at center.

We will see. I see Filip getting better almost every game and Dickinson not improving. I don't think he will get a ton of love from coaches or writers. Michigan's Wisconsin fight and Howards generally grating personality have cost Michigan some of its Big Ten + 6 cache. Dickinson might get hurt by that development, although I think Filip will earn it on the court.

From the internets:

USAGE NOTE FOR THUG

The word thug has had racial and cultural overtones since its adoption into the English language. It entered English during the British colonial period to describe a particular gang of criminals in India, but from the beginning, the otherness of the Indian robbers was intrinsic to the narrative about British colonial victims.
In American English, the word is disproportionately applied to nonwhite perpetrators of violence or crime. White teens disturbing the peace at a party with loud music are more likely to be called troublemakers or hooligans. Their Black peers are more likely to be labeled thugs for the same offense. And following this common racialized usage, thug is used by some and interpreted by many as a code word for Black. In extreme cases, thug is chosen as a dog whistle to imply that Black people are generally prone to violence or criminality.
However, there is also a reclaimed sense of thugwithin the Black community, and particularly in the hip-hop community, one that acknowledges the violence implicit in the label while also celebrating toughness and street smarts.
Because thug has many implied connotations that may change depending on who is using the word and who is being described by it, it’s important to critically consider the context and tone around each particular instance of its use to truly understand what is being communicated.

Agree. Glad he was able to get some minutes, he'll be needed later on down the road.

He also has to be ready to go if Fran calls on him. The first minute he was in the game he slow and flat footed and got out of position.
Agreed, very slow and flat footed. On defense he was a wax figure. Hope he improves, because Filip can’t do it all by himself game in and game out.

Hooligans? Did they survey some octogenarians about this?

Mulvey should be getting more garbage minutes. Of course there wont be as many of those from here on out. He should have gotten more early. I just dont get that about Fran. His rotations will always mystify me a bit.

Mulvey got in last nights game for Rebraca and forgot how to play defense and Fran didn't hesitate to put him back on the bench. At 6-11/7ft he needs to realize at this stage in his career defense is his priority and in the minute and a half he was on the floor he showed no desire to guard anyone. Learning experience.

The guy who went around him hooked him big time. It was blatant but must not.be a point of emphasis this year.

Whatever you want to call Reed is fine with me. Jerk off, bully, show off, idiot. Watched him try to stare down multiple northwestern players. Can't stand him. Hope he portals out to a different league. Big 12 maybe. Fits in with Arkansas players after their behavior vs Vanderbilt.

Both are true, to be sure. Riley needs to move his feet quicker around the basket. He's shown he can now it needs to become muscle memory. Riley couldn't have done that on the foul because that goon from Michigan just threw Riley out of the way.

I remember when "thug life" was bragging. Old white guys didn't come up with that.
This is funny. My grandfather ran an illegal casino and some bars where gambling occurred and another bar out which the "numbers" were run. We always had thugs. We would send them food on Sundays when they got old.
This is the silly racialization of an old word that has a pretty specific and universal meaning. Every demo group has thugs and everyone knows who they are, how they dress and the importance of avoiding them.

The Italians, Jews and Irish immigrants all had turns at the thug life bat. Young guys tried to dress and act like the truly original gangsters. They were idealized, especially the Mafia figures in Murder Inc, the Syndicate and the cool New York to Las Vegas life. Then the parents of all the other millions of non criminal Italian immigrants began cooling on the glory of the Mafioso.

Glorifying or trivializing thugs, goons, hitters, made man, pycho killers (the Robin Hood legends of killers from the Redneck Royalty (Bonnie and Clyde) to Jesse James, Billy the Kid, and drug dealers isn't healthy. Yeah, they're kind of cool and independent and tough BUT it's a terrible lifestyle that ends young, dead or in prison, and does nothing good for the rest of the people where criminals are trivialized or justified.
