Iowa’s longtime U.S. Rep. Jim Leach has died at 82 years old. Leach was born and raised in Davenport and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 until 2007.

Same. I voted against him finally as a protest vote against the Iraq War, but I’m not so sure I’d do it over again. One of the last sane ones in the Iowa GOP. A man of integrity.

In my first election I voted for Jimmy Carter and Jim Leach. It was his first campaign and I met him at a friend's house when she sponsored a small meet-and-greet in his bid to unseat Ed Mezvinsky. He struck me as smart and kind - something I also liked about Carter. He represented Iowa well.

Went to an election night event in Iowa City as a journalism assignment. All I remember is that everyone there was nice.
