I read in one obituary that he became wary or some public places after An Officer And A Gentleman came out because so many white guys wanted to take him on because his character Foley beat up on Mayo in the film.

I had a roommate who's last name was Mayo in college. I would out of the blue pull out LG quotes. He was always WTF. After the first semester I showed him the movie. He died laughing and said "I thought you had multiple personality disorder". Great prank.

I didn't know about his mid-life substance abuse issues. Then he came back like a stud for Officer and a Gentleman.

Kudos to him for going from his lowest point in life and not giving up and coming back.
