RIP Ms. O'Hara

Saw her years ago playing Esmerelda in Hunchback of Notre Dame with Charles Laughton and was just blown away by how gorgeous she was. Great actress.

It has been said that her career got a big boost from the
advent of Technicolor. Everybody loves a beautiful
red head on the big screen in the theaters. Black and
white films never did Maureen justice..

Like tar, I saw her in "Hunchback." And she was stunning. Ironically, the thing I remember most about that movie was Edmund O'Brien. I think it's the only movie he ever made where he wasn't overweight.

I never heard her called a particularly good actress, and she seldom got roles that called for much of a range, but she was awfully good for what she did. I think my favorite role of hers was as Natalie Wood's mother in "Miracle on 34th Street." She was playing a character that was quite unusual for the time (1947) -- a divorced mother with a high-level executive position in a large company -- but she and the script/director didn't treat it that way. She was just naturally independent. Hard to imagine her in a role where she played a subservient woman.

I think she and her husband owned LIAT or some other Caribbean airline for quite a while, but I may be thinking of somebody else.

Probably most well known for the roles she played opposite John Wayne, but, O'Hara had a truly legendary career.

She was the epitome of the fiery Irish redhead.

Like any truly great comedic actor, she was not afraid to make herself look like the fool for the sake of the production, remembering the mudslide scene; getting stripped to her drawers and spanked across John Wayne's lap; and falling down the stairs in "McClintock!"

Loved her in "The Quiet Man" and "Big Jake", as well.
