Redshirt freshman quarterback Rocky Lombardi punted after Hartbarger’s injury, and Dantonio said he is expected to hold that role in the interim after MSU’s bye week. The Spartans play at Indiana on Sept. 22 (7:30 p.m./Big Ten Network).
According to his high school’s stats page, Lombardi punted three times for 168 yards, including a 58-yarder, during his time at Valley High in Iowa.
“I think he’s an outstanding athlete — he’s punted, and he has a strong leg,” Dantonio said. “He just needs to work at it a little bit more and probably be coached in it a little bit more, because he punts with raw power right now.
“I do think he has the ability to do it. We’re gonna find out a little more as we move forward. I like his attitude and his competitiveness and anything else he’ll give you as a guy back there that is a quarterback. He understands pressure.”
