I'm guessing that Depaul will be a much stronger opponent than what we have faced so far. Having watched some of their games I feel pretty confident that they will be a legitimately tough opponent.

Assuming it is a close contest...will the rotation shrink from what Fran has used so far? Will the number of minutes players get change significantly?

I would guess so....I hope so....obviously we aren't in practice every day so we don't see what Fran sees....but so far, Joe T should get more minutes than Bakari? IF Cordell is playing well he and Nunge will get about the same amount of time and Patrick will just be subbing for Joe so his minutes will be reduced...and Joe's increased-UNLESS we are pressing quite a bit and then Patrick could play more. I honestly thought his play in the zone was pretty good.

Graza's minutes go up...Ryan loses minutes unless Luka is in foul trouble.

CJs minutes increase in this game? I'm guessing they will...

Just thoughts and I am interested in hearing others point of view

Don't know if you want Garza's minutes to go up much, he's an all out balls to the wall all the time guy, so he needs to be rested some. Kreiner will have his moments, so I wouldn't give up on him getting his minutes. Also want to see some of Nunge on the block. I would like to see more of CJ, he seemed not to play much in the 2nd half, don't know if that was one of Fran's, I forgot to put the guy back in moments, or what.

I'm not sure about more minutes for Garza either. I don't think it's possible for him to give anything short of all out effort. Sure, he's a critical piece on the offensive end. But he needs to get enough breathers spread throughout the game to keep him functioning at a high level.

No doubt, and Kreiner had his moments last season, and is pretty solid as a 10-12 minute reserve post player....

I think we will see less Nunge (unless he plays very well) and more Kreiner and Pemsl. If JBO is good to go we will see more of him as well.

Could be. As I've said in other threads, I'm not giving up on Nunge just yet. But he will need to show that he can bring more on both ends.

DePaul has the 106 ranked adjusted offense per Kenpom. So long as our offense keeps clicking, we should pull away.

They're not a bad team but I see Iowa winning by around 15.

Agree with a lot of what Perry says. I'm a big believer in playing your best players, not hunting playing time for other players, that might be good, but aren't your best options.

Luka/Ryan. Hey, Luka's All Big Ten material. It looks like he will be an outstanding low post scoring option, and that is the very best thing to have on the floor. He needs to be on the floor 30 or more minutes in every close game, in fact other than getting a blow for a couple of minutes and fouls he should never come out. If that means Ryan only gets 10 minutes then too bad for him but the goal is to win, not "fulfill" the individual players.

Same at 4. Jack looks bigger but showed nothing in the first game. He couldn't get inside position to score on a much smaller player and clearly wanted to drift outside and shoot jumpers like a 3. He didn't sweep the boards like a 6'11" 245 pounder should. He didn't shut down cutters or close off penetration. Assuming Cordell is as good as he was before the last surgery-and not be asked to play perimeter defense, Jack's minutes should be pretty limited, less than 10 a game.

If Jordan doesn't play and Bakari doesn't show more CJ/C McC/Joey T should be getting about 75 of the 80 guard minutes. P McC shouldn't be taking minutes from Joey W, another guy that should rarely be off the floor-8 to 10 minutes a game, just enough to keep Joey W fresh and out of foul trouble.

Nunge:

I think the guy is talented....I heard someone say in another thread that he wasn't very athletic-I disagree with that, I think he is athletic for a 6'11" guy. What he hasn't done so far is find his groove and show some assertiveness/aggression.

SO, a thought I have about playing time for him if I'm coaching (thank goodness I'm not) but I would still start him...and I would have an in-depth talk with him about playing hard and believing in himself. I would tell him that I want him to go out and assert himself on the boards.....that I don't want foolish fouls, but if he gets some fouls while fighting for boards, around screens, playing physical defense, and making strong moves to the basket...DO IT. That's what I want for now in the early season to get him going. Mix it up, and make some things happen. If he plays hard and uses his physical abilities I think he will get a chance to show his skills.....until he does that we won't work towards his potential and he isn't helping the team....which he is very capable of doing.

So if his minutes get limited due to fouling related to aggressive play, I can live with that for now......and it will hopefully pay off later in the season.

I'm with you.

I'd tell him to go hard at the boards, be a rim protector on interior D. If he picks up aggressive fouls that's OK. If points come, that's a bonus. That's what I see as his best role for this team.

Nunge's minutes will go down with the new Pemsl's arrival. He may eat into Kreiner's minutes as well.

I wouldn't mind seeing Pemsl & Nunge together in the front court. Might be something there...?

Hope JBo is doing well. Does anyone know how he felt on Saturday?? That, and how he feels on Tuesday could be telling moments on his season... I really hope he can play, and play with minimal to no pain.

I was at the game Friday night! Felt it was obvious to get the ball to LG. FWIW Jack will have his turn as well. I also feel Joe T is gonna be fun to watch grow into his game. We may all love CJ F. as much as Joe W before his career is over. That’s a mouthful I know.

Perry & Doc

Shouldn't write off a guy 1 game into soph year. You have to admit, though, the one game was really a lot of the same deficiencies that were present fresh year.

Now, of course we'd have FFs every year if they let guys like us coach. I continue to think Cordell is our starting 4 for the next couple seasons (really better at virtually everything but being 6'11") but the coach still needs to have that talk with Jack. I'd have him stand next to Riley and point out that Jack is 6'11" not 6'5". Expect to see him inside pounding on guys, especially if he's only going to get 10 -12 minutes a game. Make those minutes count.

I still will go by LG, Joey, CJF, have to be on the floor all the time. If JoBo is healthy I want play him with those three as well. Thats the most dangerous offensive team we have and Frederick and Joey play D.

I think Kriener will be closer to 18-20 minutes giving a couple guys a rest.
