That design was a thing of beauty. I couldn’t believe how fast their player got to where Garza was defending.

1) Did Nunge even make it difficult for them to get the ball in? It didn’t appear so.

2) That guard seemed even quicker than Toussaint and he got to that spot in no time! I thought for sure it was going in or that Garza would foul him for 3 free throws. WHEW!

3) I wish Fran would have drawn a play like that for Toussaint for the last shot in regulation of the MN game.

4) If Weezy would have made both free throws, would Fran have fouled with 3 seconds left? I certainly hope so, but we will never know.

5) I’m still super pumped about pulling out that hard fought win and two top 20 wins this week.

6) We should move back up to # 5 or 6 with KS, WI, TN and Houston all losing this week.

7) First NET rankings come out on Monday. I predict Iowa will be #5

I agree on the well designed play, as was discussed on an other thread, Nunge prevented the long pass or mid court pass, necessitating Plan B, which was the short pass, speed dribble, and long runner.
but there was no drew of Valpo play....

Without the ability to run the baseline and throw a long pass, Rutgers got about as good a shot as possible. Still, a very low percentage heave with Luka making it even harder.

So besides having a big defending the inbounds pass, is it better to not have anyone 3/4 court to help slow down the ball handler? Once that ball was inbound that guy got the ball across mid-court in no time! Or is it a risk putting pressure on the ball handler that he might get fouled?

Rutgers had Johnson making a pick on anyone trying to stay with Young, so it would have been hard to do more than we did on defense. He basically had an off-balance, half-court chuck for the win. If they had another second, Young might have been able to get at least a decent shot. Played well both ways.

Line #3 I think the ball should have been thrown half court and then called a time out, if we had any and then set up one of our 3 point shooters. Other wise JT should have dribble past half court and then passed to JBO or CJ. Very easy to second guess after the facts...

Agreed. Iowa could have played it a bit better, but you can't guard everything in that situation. Rutgers chose not to have a long pass. Iowa could have had more guys up the court to try and pressure the ball but then you open up yourself closer to the basket. As it was, Young was taking a guarded heave from 40 feet away. It had almost zero chance of succeeding.
