you can’t always get what you want!
More power to him. He's a good man.
However, I didn't like the fact where he played "the family man" card into his to his reluctance to become Speaker. Congressman, we understand it takes sacrifice and often times family is the victim. However, you are not unique in this circumstance. Just man up and and become Speaker.......or don't accept the position and all will understand.
Good luck rounding up your own kittens...you'll need it. But seriously...I hope things work well for you. The country needs an effective Congressional leader.

He's trying to force the Freedom Caucus, or whatever they are called, to stand down. They have no reason to.
This is one of the results of Citizen's United. The party doesn't have fundraising power over individual members of Congress. Any dipstick with a safe seat gets their own super pac and don't have to kneel down to the party bosses to get money. There also has been a systemic change in the amount of pork barrel spending. Members of Congress don't wheel and deal as much anymore, so the FC an be stubborn with impunity.

You've made it clear you're not much of a family man, but that doesn't mean others are as selfcentered.
22, your just full of crap.
We all have problems in life...and most of us consider FAMILY as the #1 priority. 22, I bet you do too. Ryan seems to be complaining about something most of us deal with daily or have dealt with at one time or another. The guy doesn't have to 'splain it to me....I have been there and done it.
Either take the job and start herding your kittens, or don't take it.
(Sometimes your responses are rediculous 22...and I think this one is one of your best. I really wish him the best. I really don't want to hear about his family life. Deal with it. )

It's time to get something done...it isn't necessary we have a "Family 101" lesson thrown in.

I just know you are the owner of at least one broken family Joel.

You have even been as cavalier as to say your failure as a husband and parent have had no ill effects on your children.

I just wanted you to feel as judged regarding your poor parental accomplishments, as you were attempting to judge Ryan.

Those is egg-shell houses....

Accountability.

More like cattiness.

This should be the cattiness you should strive for.

BACK TO THE POINT.....which my personal life has NO bearing.......,I wish Ryan would have backed off "the family" when it came to making this decision. It's not the Houses problem (or fault) that he has a couple of daughters and it certainly isn't a concern of mine. We have all had to make professional decisions that involve "family". His situation certainly is not unique.
Obama had a couple of young daughters, too.

When people are begging you to do a job, why not negotiate better terms? He will get along great with president Trump and we will end up with a fleet of gold plated aircraft carriers paid for with privatized SS and Medicare.

Wait, haven't you heard? The people who are hiring have all the power. The applicant has no power and just has to take whatever the employer is dishing out.

That uppity doctor told me so on the Houston transsexual bathrooms thread.

I would argue that the Speaker of the House probably has to give up more family time then an ordinary congressman.

In most cases that's the reality, this is an entirely different case that is very unique. A lot of Republicans specifically want him. . . in fact some of the other people that where running for speaker where only running because he didn't want to.

a lot of rino republicans want him, to carry on the Boehner agenda of kissing obozo's butt and passing any law or executive action that the dems want

Maybe "family time" means something else in the Ryan home. Sort of like how "date night" means something more in my home.

Wow if all those guys where that behind Obama it would have been a lot easier for him to pass a lot of bills.

Couldn't get a single Republican to vote for his healthcare bill.

Because they didn't support it. That's how it works.

Well that didn't take long:

Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., head of the House Tea Party Caucus, called Ryan’s conditions for becoming the next speaker “entirely unreasonable,” according to the Washington Examiner.

“No other speaker I know of would ever have as much power as Paul Ryan asked for himself,” Huelskamp said. “Is he serious?”

Huelskamp told the National Review that he was “put off” by Ryan’s “list of unmeetable conditions.”

“What Paul Ryan is asking for,” Huelskamp explained, “is even more power and less responsibility” than current House Speaker John Boehner.

Iowa Republican Steve King ignored Ryan’s offer and endorsed Daniel Webster of Florida for House Speaker in an op-ed today.

Webster, for his part, is backed by the conservative House Freedom Caucus and has no plans to drop out of the race.

Conservative talk radio host Mark Levin ranted against what he called the “Bushtablishment” forcing Ryan for Speaker onto the base during his program last night, blasting Ryan as disqualified for being “the most radical Republican on the issue of immigration”.

Laura Ingram on Twitter:
Moronic argument--No one is forcing him to do the job. Keep your wkends & let someone else help save the country.

EMPEROR RYAN: How many co's wd choose the employee who issued demands abt personal time then said "take it or leave it."

George Washington left the luxury & beauty of Mt Vernon for Valley Forge. He even worked wkends & missed morning workouts for his people.

Paul Ryan demands total fealty. Freedumb Caucus

There's more but I think you get the picture.

told you, we don't need no rinos 'round here. now giddy up little pardner, go on now, go home now little ryan

good, they need to spend 100 of millions, billions if need be, that's how bad and destructive the ACA is

Why is the ACA destructive? You really think we should waste billions to repeal it when we all know it wont happen.

What is your plan to replace the ACA? Prior to the ACA, premiums were skyrocketing.

Its all about costs and Rx. Until we figure this out, nothing will change.

I have been in the insurance business for 30 years- next year. I got my first insurance license in 1986, I was 19, In iowa, to sell health insurance. specifically, med supps. I then moved to NY where insurance licenses are tougher to get. I worked for the largest single issuer of indy health insurance. Now I'm in TX and still licensed, although I got my P&C also by now.

we, as a nation, worked for 50-60 years building the system we had, insurance, working somewhere and having group insurance, Medicaid for the poor. we built that. 50-60 years. it was fine.

the aca came in and destroyed 50-60 years of growth, destroyed millions of policies, the coverage is bad, deductibles higher, and now millions have no coverage, raised rates, and totally laid waste to years of hard work, and many insurance companies and doctors jumped ship. the aca even caused folks to be out of work or have less work due to new rules about employers providing coverage, so employers laid off or made people part time. nothing in the history of America has been as destructive as the aca, nothing.

now, nothing needs to replace it, we need to go back to the system we had, repeal it and go back to the system we built for 50-60 years.

by spending billions to destroy the aca, billions and even trillions could be earned in the future, and , maybe even work on paying down the national debt. when we nuked Hiroshima they said that we saved future lives. if we nuke the aca, we save future destruction of lives and the economy. there is nothing more important right now than nuking the aca. not the middle east, not the kardashians, not Hillary, not anything. nothing is more important right now.

My point Hoosier...that is a given. It is not a badge to be worn and bragged about. Public servants "donate" a lot of time and they frequently short-sheet their families, as their are only so many hours in a day. Be thankful there are such folks. However those who decide to do so, don't need to go public about their sacrifice. It's a decision each and every one of us makes daily.

If Ryan turns out to be an effective Speaker - especially if he can both tame his own team AND work across the aisle on a few sparkly issues - and if the GOP field still sucks come convention time, might we see a "Draft Ryan" movement?

I suggest he immediately start modeling himself after Teddy Roosevelt. Or maybe grow a Lincoln beard (he has that tall, gaunt thing going for him).

Have people forgotten that Ryan was a darling of the Tea Party just a few years back?

Why the big show about getting the Freedom Caucus on board?
he was? when? is that like when palin was the darling of the tea party? because this is what happened: there was a tea party and rino establishment types took it over. if you are saying he was the darling of the takeover, maybe, but I thought palin wore that crown.

Yeah. It's pretty disingenuous. "Pity me, I've chosen to give up time with my family to become the most powerful man in Congress and the 2nd most powerful man in the nation. Boo hoo. I'm such a victim."

I would much rather have the "family card" played then the "race card".

I respect the hell out of him for bringing up the conditions (as some on here complain about people taking positions with no pre-plan) and letting everyone know that his family is first. Too many times in America family is too far down the list and leads to divorce, etc.

In "big boy" politics, either you are ALL in or you are out. No conditions. It is the way the game is played. I respect any person who makes a decision based on family needs. However, I don't need to hear about it. Either you are "in" or "out."

Take it to my POTUS preference, Joe Biden. He has not made his decision because of family matters. However, if he does decide to run for POTUS, he will do so so because he is "all in". No conditions. If he doesn't run, it is because of family. Pretty simple.
We have all had times when we have "second guessed" our decisions. It is human nature. If we haven't, you will. Sooner or later. As my father used to say, "Life is tough all over."
