S. Dakota is first state to pass bill restricting transgender students’ bathroom use

I would say there is a shocking lack of understanding of human development, biology, and sexuality in this thread. But, it's HROT after all. Most schools have a minimally used bathroom that could be converted for transgendered usage with no or minimal cost. Transgendered kids suffer a lot of health issues due to fear of having a good bathroom option.
I give a sad chuckle to those of you who think someone would willingly accept societal scorn to declare themselves transgendered in order to get a thrill out of using an opposite sex bathroom. I think it's been too long since some of you were in high school and saw first hand what happens to kids who are different. I assume that's because some of you were the ones picking on the weak and the different.
So you think that if a high school student self-identifies as a female then using the girls' locker room and bathroom is going to help protect him from being picked on by mean classmates?

Holy. Hell.

I really hope none of your students come to you regarding an issue in their life you don't think exists. I'm sure they'll appreciate a teacher laughing in their face because their opinions differ from yours. I see why people bitch so much about public school teachers.

You're being an idiot. At minimum you're just making up a bunch of crap to fit your agenda here.

I'm pretty liberal when it comes to most social issues, but I gotta say if you have a penis, use the men's bathroom. If not, use the women's. Post op is okay imo to use women's. That's just like my opinion man.

You've proven yourself an idiot in this thread from your first response to this one. So I guess it does take one to know one. I mean I guess if you've never experienced it at Davenport North than no teacher anywhere has experienced it. It always amazes me how you think your experiences in the classroom should equate to everyone else's experiences.

This post is so full of fail. Your last sentence is borderline insane.

Well the burden of proof is on you. Yet here you are doing what you always do and assuming your experiences in the classroom is the same as everybody's. Hey Tom, Davenport North isn't the "end all, be all" you think it is.

Again, fail. I have never taught one second at Davenport North. I coached an ex of yours about 20 years ago... Please elaborate to how I say my teaching experiences are the same as everyone else's...because that's just dumb. Things are different building to building...district to district. Like I said, you are making things up.

It's odd because I generally think you and I are on the same side of the education argument and have been over the years.

Because they exist?

No they don't.

You indicated that transgender children don't exist. Were you being sarcastic? You even say in your last post that things are different from building to building/district to district but you seem to claim that because you've never experienced it in your teaching career that it doesn't exist. Sorry about the screw up on Davenport North, but I know you teach in a school in the Davenport area.

I did too, until I read your responses in this thread.

A co-worker and I were just discussing this a few minutes ago. I say they don't at the elementary age because their brains aren't fully formed and the kids have so much room to grow and mature that they truly don't have the intellect to make that kind of life long decision.

Then we discussed that their hormones need to be kicking in able to be at the age where they can make that decision. But then we thought, at that age, when their bodies are changing so much due to hormones, kids are basically insane (joke) and shouldn't be making that decision.

We pretty much settled on mature 14 year old females, and probably both sexes by 16. So if we are saying "children" as mid range teens, then yes, I agree with you. My initial reaction to this thread was picturing little elementary aged kids.

For the record, I have never laughed in a kid's face when they have brought an issue to me.

Hope that explains it better.

Also, if you feel like I push my beliefs on you as far as how I think schools are, I apologize. The thing is...I am passionate about what I do and my interactions with kids. When people - not you - start these bi-monthly threads ripping teachers, you're damn right I am going to defend what we do and try to get people to understand that how they might remember their schooling, what we see in buildings now, from an adult perspective might be very different. That's all.
