Sam Phillips is a Hawkeye.

Someone asking if he can block in 3.....2.....

49 receptions for 803 yards
16.4 ypc
only 3 TDs though

sounds like a good get, better than the one we didn't get yesterday
I think Luke Lachey had zero TDs during the regular season. I am more impressed with the 16.4 ypc and would love to know how much of that is yards after the catch YAC. We need guys who can get open, catch it, and break away and beat tackles

Very good news.

Honestly I'm not concerned about the WR room. Sure it would great to have a star, but at least the Hawks have a lot of guys that can play and play well IMO. It's on Lester to get 'em open and the QB to get 'em the ball.
And then there's that Wetjen walkon guy who, I hear, is kinda fast. I wonder what would happen if Lester played him in the slot and the QB threw him the ball. Of course, I wonder a lot of things . . .

ask Lester he will tell you he would love to do it but apparently he has a case of the “can’t understand how to run a route”s

It was talked about ad nauseam by the announcers in one of the last 3 games, I just don’t recall which one.

By comparison, Seth Anderson, who has done nothing at Iowa in 2 years, arrived from Charleston Southern after the following season:

42 receptions for 612 yards
14.6 ypc
7 TDs

Very comparable, as they are both played key roles for low level FCS teams and were both undersized for Power 4 football so they didn't get recruited out of high school. I'm all for bringing in all the speeding receivers we can get. But when you resort to recruiting FCS/DII caliber transfers, I wouldn't get your hopes up on them making a splash in the Big 10.

There were something like 400 FBS WRs in the portal this year but the Hawks didn't get a visit from any of them. Even guys like Gill, who was 8th on Northwestern's depth chart, was probably a higher profile get than a starter from Chattanooga. But you never know. This kid graded out pretty high in terms of catching the catchable balls thrown to him.

Obviously, stats don’t tell the whole story, but the first half of the schedule Phillips had some big games receiving—195 yards game 2, 150 yards game 4, and 115 yards game 5.

His stats were pedestrian in the second half of the season, so I am curious as to why there was such a sharp drop (i.e. playing through an injury?).

Anyway, who knows the impact he’ll have at Iowa?

That’s why I am looking to the spring portal period. You’ll have a better pitch to make thanks to landing Gronowski. Might get a couple more bites.

I will wait and see how he does on the field.

Glad to have you as a Hawkeye, good luck! Hope you do well!

In his defense he’s been injured a lot.

I am pretty sure it was the bowl game that they were discussing it because we did start to see him on the field more. But really if they intend to get him the ball he is usually getting it directly from the QB in some kind of motion instead dropping a pass or being out of position/running wrong route

true but one difference is that Lester wanted and got sam phillips not his predecessor. we'll see going forward if that is a meaningul difference, i think it will be.

Seth has also been hurt more than Tony Moeaki so tough to get PT when you are in street clothes. Had that sick catch vs. NW and in Cade's first game but not too much else. If he stays healthy he can be another good weapon.

Or maybe that little slip screen pass play CJB used to throw to Vande Burg about 3 times a game...usually to wide side of field, usually just an extension of the running game but was pretty darn effective for 5-8 yards.

Agreed. The "jail break" screen seems to have disappeared from the playbook, but I'd like to see them try more quick hitters like that with Wetjen. He doesn't have to learn a lot about downfield route trees if he's getting quick screens.

Lester already has a QB that can get them the ball - Sullivan. Need to A. Have an OL that can block for at least 2 seconds B. Call pass plays. Both were lacking in the second half of the bowl game.

I don’t know much about football and really became a fan in about 2000, I remember a jail break screen in 2002 to I believe C.J. Jones (See you later!) and I believe he housed it and thinking “my goodness what a thing of beauty”, I think I recall Damond Powell taking one to the house as well but could be mistaken

Sullivan will be the situational redzone qb next year, a position he excels at. No way did Gronowski transfer in to sit. Unless he's got a nagging knee injury and wanted to take advantage of UIHC while collecting a check. Could be the start of the next great Iowa college football tradition. Cade got his foot in, Mark opens the door, now all broken QBs know they have a safe haven to rehab and be paid. (Satire. Hopefully)

Remember, Lester isn't the WR coach. Iowa actually downgraded when it came to WR coaching duties, which wasn't an easy task considering how bad the WR play was before Budmeyer was gifted the job.

Oh, so you like a closed competition position. That very well may be what Caption Kirk does. He is a proven idiot when it comes to QB evaluation and stubbornness. Sullivan completed over 70% of his passes this season with the receivers he had and a horrible OL. According to KJ, Sullivan's running ability opened up holes for him. I think Sullivan is an above average QB that just needs some help.
