Sam Phillips is a Hawkeye.

Oh, so you like a closed competition position. That very well may be what Caption Kirk does. He is a proven idiot when it comes to QB evaluation and stubbornness. Sullivan completed over 70% of his passes this season with the receivers he had and a horrible OL. According to KJ, Sullivan's running ability opened up holes for him. I think Sullivan is an above average QB that just needs some help.
Kirk isn't running the QB room anymore. Of that I am fairly confident.

And then there's that Wetjen walkon guy who, I hear, is kinda fast. I wonder what would happen if Lester played him in the slot and the QB threw him the ball. Of course, I wonder a lot of things . . .
Wetjen could move to the defense and become the next Cooper Dejean.

By comparison, Seth Anderson, who has done nothing at Iowa in 2 years, arrived from Charleston Southern after the following season:

42 receptions for 612 yards
14.6 ypc
7 TDs

Very comparable, as they are both played key roles for low level FCS teams and were both undersized for Power 4 football so they didn't get recruited out of high school. I'm all for bringing in all the speeding receivers we can get. But when you resort to recruiting FCS/DII caliber transfers, I wouldn't get your hopes up on them making a splash in the Big 10.

There were something like 400 FBS WRs in the portal this year but the Hawks didn't get a visit from any of them. Even guys like Gill, who was 8th on Northwestern's depth chart, was probably a higher profile get than a starter from Chattanooga. But you never know. This kid graded out pretty high in terms of catching the catchable balls thrown to him.
Another negative expert.

Proven idiots are typically Kirk critics.

I never said I like a closed competition. In fact I hope they do "battle" it out but I would be very surprised that Mark transferred somewhere, especially Iowa, without the inferred message he would be QB1. I personally think Brendan is the perfect change of pace guy. His style of play doesn't lead me to believe he can survive a full season of #1 snaps, as does the evidence of him being knocked out of at least one game this season.

Maybe Anderson will get crean’d ?🤷‍♂️

Speed and deep threat. Two things desperately needed in WR room. Haven’t had someone Ds had to worry about beating them over the top and keep them honest since ISM.

As for anyone complaining or ridiculing. Iowa needs to improve our wr and we aren’t getting any P4 guys at this position with any productivity. This is type of player thinking we needed and glad we got.

Anderson arrived under some very unfortunate circumstances. He was oft-injured which limited his playing time. He spent his first season playing with perhaps the worst combination of OC and QB's in the history of FBS. Oh did I mention that it was the worst passing offense in all of FBS over the past 2 years? IMO, had he been healthy and playing within a competent offense, he'd have had a very good Iowa career. As it was, he only played in 4 games this year, but did catch 5 balls with an average of 21 yards per catch.

Gronowski, check.
Johnson-Arigu (MBB), check.
Now Phllips, check.

I don't think Kirk ever ran the QB room. It's definitely Lester's room now, but previously it was O'Keefe, Davis, O'Keefe, and B. Ferentz.
I think he’s suggesting Kirk doesn’t decide who will be starting at QB for Iowa anymore.

Kirk most certainly did do that before Lester. I do believe Lester has most of the input on that today.

I think he was probably much more involved in it over the last several years than he had been in a long time given all of the problems on offense and particularly at that position. If not, then he should have been fired along with Brian for management malpractice.

Yes sir! I was really hoping we could bring Sam into the fold and lo and behold we did! I have a very good feeling about him and watching that video tells me he has good hands to go along with his open field speed. Welcome to the family Sam!

true but one difference is that Lester wanted and got sam phillips not his predecessor. we'll see going forward if that is a meaningul difference, i think it will be.
Totally agree. Hard to be too critical of Anderson between injuries and And he’s also had a revolving door and total shitshow at the QB position too. Hard for a WR to truly gain timing, confidence, rapport, and success with what we’ve been running out there at QB the last few years.

This is wise, given the WR room now.

Do will still have time, this cycle, to sign portal transfers? If so, maybe focus on other needs currently?
There is no time limit on adding portal players. They can commit 365 days a year. They only have certain periods of time in which they enter the portal.

To answer your question. Yes, there is still time, as long someone is still there to take.

As an outsider looking in, I would imagine they need to focus on the secondary.

With all the guys coming back and up on the OL, it’s not as urgent as I once said, but depth would be great.

To your point, they really don’t seem too worried about the OL. They must really like the younger guys. I think the OL is in a position where they’ll take a guaranteed starter at tackle, but that might be about it? I think the talent is probably there, but there is going to be a spot with little to no experience as things sit.

I’d be satisfied if they just get a corner, but I suspect they end up with 2-3 more portal additions before it’s all said and done?

So stats are the determining factor? There is no work ethic, personality, desire to be great, etc to distinguish one player from another?
