Looking at Dafney and Sargent holy crap they’re both specimens physically and same goes for Henry Giel.. wow what a stud as a true freshman. These players on the entire team look the most physically ready as I have ever seen from any Hawkeye unit in the past.. now I am hoping they can translate this onto the field of play.. I think we have a mighty special Hawkeye team this year and we have a lot of leadership back so I hope that equates to a very very good season.

Dafney was a destroyer on special teams last year. I really could see him taking on an expanded role over the next year or two. Given that he'll be a SR in '19, I could see him taking on an important leadership role then.

I feel like Dafney has performed well at open practices and has shown up a lot in previous camp pictures. I’ve been waiting for him to get some PT.
From his measurables and his special teams play - he seems like he could really be the sort of WR who does the "dirty work" for us .... much like Hillyer did in 2015. I genuinely believe that could be enough to help carve out a niche for him.

Sargent will be playing as long as he knows the plays. I assume he is catching on just fine.
Dafney seems prepared to contribute and I hope he gets the opportunity. Physically he could really present mismatch issues for defenses.

Yeah, if Sargent learns the playbook, I could definitely see him receiving game-reps. He'll also need to make sure that he picks up the protections as well - because the coaches won't let a guy on the field if it endangers Stanley. That was arguably one of the things that kept Toren on the sideline last year - it was an important element of his game that he needed to improve upon.

An obvious advantage that Sargent owns over both Toren and Ivory is that he received a ton of starter snaps last year AND he was productive doing so. IWCC is a program that has players that regularly go on to play at the P5 level ... and most seem ready to do so. A number of years back, ISU had a pretty productive back by the name of Wimberly. Their RB coach thinks that Sargent is even better.

What's also huge is that he had all those snaps ... and he didn't turn the ball over much either. Furthermore, we're not talking about those high school yards where the guy breaks to the sideline and gets the untouched big-gainers. Sargent was productive at IWCC while still having a lot of those yards be hard-earned yards ... yards earned between the tackles. Furthermore, he was pretty versatile ... and he was pretty productive when catching the ball out of the back-field too.

While I doubt that Sargent wrestles the starting spot away from Toren ... I think that he's going to really help along the RB competition AND supply us with high quality snaps when he earns his carries.

Sargent has me excited. Have only seen highlights but from what I've heard he kind of sounds like an Albert Young type back. I like Dafney but I'm also still holding out some hope that Devonte Young gets a few reps out there. I know he had a decent spring a couple years ago but I don't think I've heard anything on him since. Saw he was still on the roster and I thought that was pretty impressive. Not a lot of people would keep at it after getting passed up by so many youngsters.

Albert Young with speed maybe. If Albert had another gear on his top speed he would have played for awhile on Sundays. I know he was with the Vikings for a minute but I mean Shonn Greene type of playing time.

Dafney’s main problem is that he is one of the slower WRs. But with his size he is one the top blockers.

Wow, hard to judge a book by its cover:
- Do these players know the play book
- Do they have speed required to get separation
- What about blocking and ability to catch the ball
- Maybe, just maybe there are other players that are better.

I see the Hillyer/Dafney similarities as well but it sounds like Brandon Smith (another big bodied receiver but with more athleticism) has been impressing. I think he really stands in the way of Dafney seeing the field, which is a good problem for Iowa to have

Can't quite figure out the D.Young situation, he looks the part & as you said had some flashes in open practices, just can't seem to get on the field even after the last few years of collective below average wr play.

Sargent and Dafney.........sounds like a good "buddy cop" movie duo.

This. I'm amazed when I see posts that say somebody looks like a stud and how ripped they are that they need to see the field. Or someone saying "I hope so and so gets a lot of playing time this year.". I just want the best players on the field...who they are and whether they "look the part" or appear "physically ready" in pictures doesn't matter to me.

He has managed to earn special teams duty over the past 2 years - so that is still an important step towards being within the coaches "circle of trust." However, my guess is that he still needs to improve his consistency and fundamentals when executing within the new O.

The fact that he played (and was a 2nd stringer) back in '16 when he was a TR FR may really have illustrated how poor our WR situation was. Jerminic Smith made a nice splash in '15 ... but he kinda coasted into '16, expecting to be a top starter for us. Scheel had talent ... but was oft-injured. McCarron was a SR and managed to have a pretty solid season. VandeBerg got injured after the first few games of the season. Falconer was injured early in the season and ultimately returned and started taking away some of the positional reps from Devonte. If I recall, we had Parker ... but he was injured ... and if I recall correctly, the injury was bad enough to keep him out of most of the season. Harris may have already left at that point ... and Ogwo had switched over full-time to track prior to the start of the season.

If we look at '18, we're comparably young at WR ... however, the difference is that we have more guys with the talent of Jerminic Smith ... but they're guys who are putting in the work to improve. Also, knock on wood, most of the WRs seems to be enjoying better health than Scheel. If you have talented guys who are receptive to Kelton's coaching ... and are also putting in all the work they can to improve ... then you have a group that really has a chance to be pretty decent.

So part of why Devonte has not returned to the depth chart is probably because the WR room is far more competitive than it was ... even just a few years back.

Nothing like saying who should play based on practice photos. I kid, kind of. It's a testament to how interested Iowa fans are in the buzz generated by practice photos (I like them too). Everyone is interested in hearing how things are progressing and getting feedback during Media Day and the Kid's Day open practice. In general, I am impressed with the level of athlete that Iowa has brought in the last 2 years. Many of the players come in needing less development to see the field. Nearly all of the freshmen DB's fall into that category, plus guys like Doyle and McDonald at LB. And you pointed out Geil doesn't look like a true freshman.

Agreed.

RB's come in all body types as we know.
WR's come in all body types too. Look at skinny little MVB and last year Max Cooper. They catch the ball.

That said, I too am very intrigued and excited by Daphney and Sargent.

Also, I've heard the IKM is lighting it up in camp. Can anyone confirm?

Can’t confirm but doesn’t shock me in the least .. he’s not a tiny guy at 5’11 195 or 200 pounds and has a burst like we haven’t scene since Tavian Banks.. he’s going to be good and if they keep Harrell at RB ages even faster than IKM I hear

So now we are comparing Sargent to Tavian Banks, who averaged nearly 7 yards per carry his senior year with 17 TD's? The same Banks who was probably the best home run threat at Iowa RB in the last 30-40 years. Just so we are clear on that. I trust the Iowa coaches to know when they like what they see on film, but let's just see how he does against P5 competition.

But do they look fast in the pictures? Because that's how I know who should play or not.
