The race is heating up for Stevens Point (Wis.) 2018 forward Joey Hauser. With coaches now allowed to travel the country and watch their top targets, Hauser has been a busy man. Also in the midst of his football season, Hauser is trying to set up visits this fall as well.

“I’ve been looking at some dates for visits, but I’ve been really busy,” Hauser told NY2LA Sports. “I’m trying to get to a couple football games at Michigan State and probably go to Wisconsin for a game. Those are probably the two schools I’ll go to watch a game.”

Hauser has offers from Marquette, Iowa, Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Northwestern, Iowa State, Nebraska, Purdue, and others. The 6-foot-8, 210-pound junior said six schools are currently recruiting him hardest. “Right now, the hardest would be Marquette, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Duke – they haven’t offered yet, but they’re definitely recruiting me pretty solidly – and Virginia.”

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo visited Hauser in Stevens Point last week. “Coach Izzo talked to me about how I’d fit in really well,” Hauser said. “He really likes me as a player and a person. I really like their staff, I like coach Izzo. He just said a lot of good things about what we could together.”

Wisconsin assistant coach Lamont Paris watched Hauser at his football game on Friday. “They’re telling me that they want me for that one spot in 2018,” Hauser explained. “Nothing has changed with Tyler Herro committing. They still have high interest in me.”

Marquette and head coach Steve Wojciechowski also stopped by last week. Hauser’s brother, Sam, is a freshman for the Golden Eagles this season. “Coach Wojo came up this past weekend and watched me workout,” Hauser said. “He just kind of told me that I’m their main guy. He thinks if I come to Marquette, it would be a huge pickup. He talks about playing with my brother, but he doesn’t want that to be the main reason I’m coming. He wants it to be the right fit for me.”

Since joining the Iowa Barnstormers AAU program, Hauser has grown close with the Hawkeyes as well. “I like coach (Fran) McCaffery a lot,” said Hauser. “The way they play, their offense is really cool. A lot of guys get the green light. They have a fun style of offense and a really good program. I’ve gotten to know them and some of the kids going there a lot better.”

Hauser plans to take an early official visit to Virginia this season and see head coach Tony Bennett, who also attended Stevens Point high school. “Coach Bennett is from around this area, so I have good relationship with him,” said Hauser. “I know he’s a great guy and a great coach.”

Duke, Arizona, Notre Dame, Ohio State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Indiana, and others have been showing interest in Hauser this fall. Hauser said the Blue Devils appear quite serious. “They’re telling me they’ll come see me workout one of these days,” said Hauser. “I talked to coach (Mike) Krzyzewski and he knows that I know that Duke is one of the top programs. He just told me to keep working on my game. They like the way I play. They’d probably be in my top list (if they offer). Not the top, but they’d definitely be up there. I’d have to choose between a couple schools, but I’m looking forward to building a better relationship and possibly visiting out there.”

Hauser plans to make a decision before his senior season and perhaps has early as this coming spring. Even with a few potential blue blood offers out there, Hauser won’t push back his timeline too much, if at all. “That would be really something cool, but if I feel there’s a place that’s right for me, I wouldn’t be hesitant to decide early,” he said. “I still think it will be this upcoming spring or summer. I’m looking for the right fit, where I can see myself being most successful. Obviously you want to win in college, but do it with people you’re going to like to be around. The right fit, right coaching staff, being around great players, great community, and a lot of people supporting you.”

Hauser plays with the Iowa Barnstormers during the travel season.

Reading that article, it seems like it's between MSU and Marquette unless Duke offers. If he really falls in love with Iowa offense as he alludes to in the article and we have some Iowa connection not mentioned, maybe we'd have a chance.

I think a lot of kids feel pressure to go to the blue bloods if they can, because it validates how good they are in the eyes of their classmates, etc. Iowa would not be a sexy choice in that sense, but Hauser seems grounded enough to choose us over MSU, for example.

The best vibe here is how he likes our offense, because that may be the biggest advantage over Wisconsin to a large extent.

Hauser, to me, represents that footprint, or region of influence, that Iowa is growing. We got into Chicago. We nabbed Cook. In state there was never a question Wieskamp would be a Hawkeye. It feels like our shoe size has grown from about a nine to a twelve. Will we get Hauser? We have a legit shot. That wasn't happening when McCaffery first arrived.

Big kudos to Fran and big kudos to our excellent AAU clubs like the Barnstormers. Now let's make a couple Academy Schools like Oak Hill. :) I don't know, Corn Lake, or Pork Point? Not really kidding.

When kids can be swayed that much by a Duke offer.....

I know it's a big thing. We all wish we could play for Duke.

We're trying to build at Iowa. Something even slightly similar to what Duke has done would have us barrel chesting all over the place.

I love Iowa and would choose Iowa. But if i was to earn a million dollars to win a National Title, I'd choose Duke every single time.

My dream would be to beat Duke in the NTG. That would be awesomeness.

Getting Hauser would be a major coup for Fran.

I still think he stays home and goes to Wisconsin though.

I've heard Wisconsin is probably unlikely. Marquette seems to be the favorite unless Wahjo gets shown the door.

Considering his Bro didn't go to Wisconsin, and with Bo gone, it seems that Wisconsin isn't the automatic pick. Duke , MSU, and Marquette are tough competition though, so if he is into blue bloods or his Bro's team, Iowa doesn't have much of a chance.

The skilled big is the type of player that Fran has been able to pull in, so I don't see this guy as an absolute must get. Getting Cook out of Missouri was bigger get because that type is the type of athletic player Iowa struggles to get to go to Iowa.

Coach K has built a dynasty at Duke, but he will close to 71 when the Class of 2018 arrives. Will he be another Wooden and Coach until he's 80? There's a chance Duke's 2018 Class (the ones that stay 3-4 seasons) may see a new coach before they leave. Transitions can be tricky when you are replacing a living legend.

Cook will need quite a bit of skill development for him to automatically become the bigger get.

Bo leaving helps UW with Hauser.

I was thinking the same thing. Coach K's reign at Duke is almost over. Who knows if his successor can keep it going.

He won't end up at MSU.

Have zero info that delt knows anything more than what he posted but I like his post anyway......

Hope it's true.....after his glowing comments about Iowa, Fran and his Iowa Barnstomers teammates, I can't really see Hauser being a Sparty in that program....just my thinking.

it sounds me like he looking at a great fit over a named school. He already know she fits well with the staff and his current and future teammates. Not sure where he goes but I like our chances

I think Iowa has a great shot. I think the style of ball we play is very appealing to players like Hauser - I suspect he wants a place that will allow him to play all over the court and not get stuck playing down low. I also wouldn't underestimate the relationship he is building with Coach Fran through playing with his son.

Also, you can never have too many highly skilled big guys and as we recruit better players there will always be early departures for NBA or other schools.

Go Hawkeyes!!!

It's an MSU, Marquette, UW race at this point. UVA maybe. Iowa no chance.
That the first three mentioned schools are the contenders (not in that order) is what I was told by a BB coach (not UW system) that I respect.
Coach Bennett was in Stevens Point Monday night to take a look.

I think there is something wrong with your keyboard. It looks like you typed Iowa would have early departures (with an s) to the NBA.

Unless I'm forgetting someone, they've had one in the history of the program (Ricky Davis). It's not a trend I see starting anytime soon.

Tyler Cook has a very good possibility of leaving for the NBA early.

And technically Chris Kingsbury also left early for NBA... he was just late for his flight :(

I'll believe it when I see it in regards to Cook. Hopefully he's good enough to warrant that.

He is. Best looking prospect I've seen in an Iowa uniform going back to the mid 80's. He's got areas to improve (defense, rebounding) but offensively he's going to be a super star

Going by this one article and no other outside knowledge of the kid, but his quotes are all mundane coach speak until he gets to talking about Iowa. He really opened up and sounded excited about Iowa.
