The race is heating up for Stevens Point (Wis.) 2018 forward Joey Hauser. With coaches now allowed to travel the country and watch their top targets, Hauser has been a busy man. Also in the midst of his football season, Hauser is trying to set up visits this fall as well.
“I’ve been looking at some dates for visits, but I’ve been really busy,” Hauser told NY2LA Sports. “I’m trying to get to a couple football games at Michigan State and probably go to Wisconsin for a game. Those are probably the two schools I’ll go to watch a game.”
Hauser has offers from Marquette, Iowa, Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Northwestern, Iowa State, Nebraska, Purdue, and others. The 6-foot-8, 210-pound junior said six schools are currently recruiting him hardest. “Right now, the hardest would be Marquette, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Duke – they haven’t offered yet, but they’re definitely recruiting me pretty solidly – and Virginia.”
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo visited Hauser in Stevens Point last week. “Coach Izzo talked to me about how I’d fit in really well,” Hauser said. “He really likes me as a player and a person. I really like their staff, I like coach Izzo. He just said a lot of good things about what we could together.”
Wisconsin assistant coach Lamont Paris watched Hauser at his football game on Friday. “They’re telling me that they want me for that one spot in 2018,” Hauser explained. “Nothing has changed with Tyler Herro committing. They still have high interest in me.”
Marquette and head coach Steve Wojciechowski also stopped by last week. Hauser’s brother, Sam, is a freshman for the Golden Eagles this season. “Coach Wojo came up this past weekend and watched me workout,” Hauser said. “He just kind of told me that I’m their main guy. He thinks if I come to Marquette, it would be a huge pickup. He talks about playing with my brother, but he doesn’t want that to be the main reason I’m coming. He wants it to be the right fit for me.”
Since joining the Iowa Barnstormers AAU program, Hauser has grown close with the Hawkeyes as well. “I like coach (Fran) McCaffery a lot,” said Hauser. “The way they play, their offense is really cool. A lot of guys get the green light. They have a fun style of offense and a really good program. I’ve gotten to know them and some of the kids going there a lot better.”
Hauser plans to take an early official visit to Virginia this season and see head coach Tony Bennett, who also attended Stevens Point high school. “Coach Bennett is from around this area, so I have good relationship with him,” said Hauser. “I know he’s a great guy and a great coach.”
Duke, Arizona, Notre Dame, Ohio State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Indiana, and others have been showing interest in Hauser this fall. Hauser said the Blue Devils appear quite serious. “They’re telling me they’ll come see me workout one of these days,” said Hauser. “I talked to coach (Mike) Krzyzewski and he knows that I know that Duke is one of the top programs. He just told me to keep working on my game. They like the way I play. They’d probably be in my top list (if they offer). Not the top, but they’d definitely be up there. I’d have to choose between a couple schools, but I’m looking forward to building a better relationship and possibly visiting out there.”
Hauser plans to make a decision before his senior season and perhaps has early as this coming spring. Even with a few potential blue blood offers out there, Hauser won’t push back his timeline too much, if at all. “That would be really something cool, but if I feel there’s a place that’s right for me, I wouldn’t be hesitant to decide early,” he said. “I still think it will be this upcoming spring or summer. I’m looking for the right fit, where I can see myself being most successful. Obviously you want to win in college, but do it with people you’re going to like to be around. The right fit, right coaching staff, being around great players, great community, and a lot of people supporting you.”
Hauser plays with the Iowa Barnstormers during the travel season.
