I get the seat backs to keep the fat people from invading my space
Or to not have to show up a half hour early to have a space to sit. Take it form a former north end zone ticket holder: It doesn't even have to be fatties.
I agree, except in the north stands (where I sit), this usually means having my knees in the back & my nose sniffing the head of the person sitting in front of me.

They've been $8 each, I believe, for the last couple of seasons at least (if you don't have season tickets). Another case of if we can make money on it, it's OK. Many of us well remember the days when seatbacks were banned in historic Kinnick Stadium. Magically, they became unbanned when the athletic department realized there was money to be made.
But whatever they charge, as others have noted, I think they are almost a necessity these days.

Except last year. Up until Minnesota you could pretty much pick a spot to lay down if you wanted to. Minnesota got tight though. We get seatbacks every year.
