Senior Joshua Ramirez, 3x LA champ moves to Iowa

Really athletic kid, never really had partners and as a result hasn't improved a whole lot the past few years. He should cruise to a state title.

Thought this was interesting from IA Wrestle, Perry connection.. anyone with more insight? No matter what got to like the mindset.
My guess would be the connection is T.J. Miller, who is now the Head Coach at Loras in Dubuque, but was in Louisiana for several years at Holy Cross High School, won some State Titles there, etc.

I believe he was trying to get a little pipeline going a few years back while still down in New Orleans, trying to help get some of those southern boys to lower level colleges in Iowa to wrestle (not a whole lot of opportunity down that way for College Wrestling..............). He's got several Louisiana kids on his roster at Loras.

Perhaps Ramirez wasn't getting much in the way of money from Illinois, and decided to make the move and see if he could improve his stock somewhat. Obviously pure speculation on my part. Big move for the young man regardless. Good luck to him.

Do all high schools in Iowa openly recruit or just the private religious ones?

Iowa, Iowa St or Uni be interesting to see who lands him if they lose Hidlay who's leaning towards Lehigh then I think Iowa makes a push for him

Interesting. Someone else noted he would cruise to a state title. We'll see. He will find the going a lot tougher up here.

Sidebar: I thought Denver-Tripoli was no longer and with the breakup, Denver was moving to 1A?

Correct. It is just Denver wrestling now and we are 1A.
Edit to add, returning points from last year is still the same as listed in the article.

You are correct. The returning points was from a piece we ran shortly after the state tournament that was just copied into this one to give fans some perspective on how Ramirez's addition could impact the 2A race. It should have been caught, but I have updated to note the two schools splitting.

He placed a few times at Fargo apparently. Around these parts that's money......

So yeah, the going in Iowa will be tougher, but he was apparently recruited by and verbaled to Illinois, so I think he'll be just fine.

You guys should have kept Tripoli around. Marquise Paino is a new student at Tripoli this year. He got 5th in Illinois last year at 195!

I'm sure he will be. But Dayton Racer had big national accolades, and major recruiting interest, and moved to Iowa and didn't win it.

Interested to see how this kid is going to do this year!

Kids coming form out of state have not been lock for state title in Iowa. The Iowa state tournament is a different beast. Also kids probably feel extra pressure to represent there state as well. Here couple guys that might stop Ramirez
160 Isaaic judge last year state champ 152
170 Luke hagman. Kid just needs to make it though districts. He beat returning state champ during the season and I believe Luke beat 2017 state champ. Luke also beat the kid that got third
182 Julen broderson all three in state college should be on him. He was last year state champ at 160

He has wins over Jack Jessen & Marcus Coleman. Not bad.

Those are quality wins. Who will be his biggest conpetition? Tanner Sloan is tough in 1A and Ben Sarrasin will probably be the #1 guy in 3A, nobody comes to mind in 2A.

Edit, just read the post a few above mine.

Kids living in Iowa their entire lives with similar accolades face the same issues he will.

In wrestling, public schools are among the biggest offenders: SEP, Clarion-Goldfield, Waverly, Solon...you could go on.
Biggest offenders? Seriously?!! SEP and IC West top the list and it isn't even close. Solon has had like 2 kids move in. That's about what WSR has had move in as well.

Eh. I will fully admit to pulling names out of my butt. I will admit to being off on Solon but WSR has had a heck of a lot more than just 2 over the years. When they first got good upwards of half their lineup magically appeared during high school.

My guess of anyone posting Hidley as a "Lehigh lean" on this message board heard from a friend of a friend, or is throwing something against the wall. I wouldn't put too much stock in it. I doubt that anyone close to Trent to know that would post here. Just my guess though.

Well he was suppose to take his official there this past weekend and will also be there this weekend for WNO. So it is possible he is a Lehigh lean.

Several good kids down here. I live outside N.O. in the Hahnville HS district. HHHS sent Kendrick Jones a 2x LA state Champ to Iowa Central CC (last year was his second year, he was a JC 5th his first year). Also, sent another 2 timer to North Carolina where he started last year as a FR.

Ramirez comes from Rummel HS a very good catholic school so he should be able to compete but will be surprised if he wins a title. All you have to do to qualify for state is place in your conference/district tourny. Qualifying for the St. Tourny in IA is much tougher than LA.

Rummel, Holy Cross, Brother Martin and Jesuit High Schools in New Orleans are the best local school with Catholic Hs in Baton Rouge being another.

TJ Miller was the coach at Holy Cross as mentioned he was replaced by another Iowa guy Azinger. Wartburgs roster had a few kids from LA and I am sure TJ will get some good kids to go to Loras as well. The closest schools to LA that offer wrestling would be Tennessee Chattanooga, Oklahoma schools, Georgia St. and I believe a DII school in Dallas.

From everything I've heard and seen, it's between Iowa and NC St. I thought it was pretty telling back in May that Iowa was the only school he posted on social media about at all this off season going on an unofficial visit. Obviously he has probably been to NCST plenty with Hayden there, and Lehigh being in state, but still found it interesting.

I don't think it matters that he's coming from a weaker state than Iowa as he has already proven himself nationally beating guys like Jessen, he's also beat Bailee o'reilly who is a Minnesota state champ so obviously he can beat champs from tougher states and I would say Minnesota and Iowa highschool wrestling are pretty similar talent wise. He'll probably end up being the favorite to win it

His Purdue visit was suppose to be this weekend, but now he is doing WNO. I wonder if he will reschedule. If not I would expect his announcement soon.

I don't disagree with you, he could very well be a favorite to win a title, I just believe that the depth in LA is no where close to what is is in MN or IA. His road to a title, IMO, is much tougher in IA than LA no matter whether it is class 3A or 2A. I would compare LA large school competition with IA 2A.

I think Racer had beat him earlier in the year also.

Yes he had. Both were top caliber wrestlers.

I would be very surprised to see Rameriz not win. Yes LA is weak but he's placed at Fargo numerous times and has beaten some top nationally ranked wrestlers. Plus 2A is decent but nowhere near as strong as 3A

Bettendorf has to be up there and maybe Assumption too back in the day?

You are wrong. One from Apple Valley and one from Waterloo East. That is all I can remember. Name the others.

Along with Devos and the East kid there was Rottink Seehusen a kid from Greene and I think one from Denver. Not to mention the Janesville Kids

Janesville can only wrestle with WSR so those aren't transfers. Yes, I believe some of those kids did move in but were not there just for wrestling and they weren't their studs. . I guess I was more thinking of "studs" transferring once in HS. All those kids you mentioned were in that club from little kid wrestling on up. How about all the state champs, big point getters? Those were WSR kids from the beginning. Unlike SEP who had 4 of their 5 state finalists move in. I see it a little differently.

Either way, transferring is happening a lot and it isn't going to change.

Well, one year they brought in a kid from Africa. In addition, there have been several kids from Waterloo, Denver, other points west, and even one from Charles City. It has been awhile so I don't recall all the names.

Anyway, I wouldn't count Janesville kids, either. Janesville is part of the WSR wrestling program.

This was the point I was trying to make. I certainly consider him the favorite. Just not ready to hand him the title--the road will be much tougher and he will be more prone to upset.

Wrong they were not in Waverly kids club. Rottink got 4th I believe
