Senior Joshua Ramirez, 3x LA champ moves to Iowa

Wrong they were not in Waverly kids club. Rottink got 4th I believe

Plus, it matters they were in the Waverly kids club...why? They didn't live in the Waverly district. We have all kinds of kids from other towns in our local club but there's no thought or expectation that they will come to our school when they get to high school. They don't live here so why would they? That's typical excuse making.

SEPolk has a ton of kids in their pipeline. They have Porcellis in Pleasant Hill that trains kids from all over central Iowa, some of which end up at SEPolk. They have ICE Performance in Altoona who have 5 or 6 kids that have won National Tournaments and most will be Rams. Hammer Time at DM East has a few kids that will end up at SEPolk also. The SEPolk kids club has huge numbers of kids also, so they aren't going anywhere anytime soon. If my kid wrestled somewhere else I would consider them.

Last year New Hampton and Solon were the biggest recruiters. You just don't hear about New Hampton because just like baseball they always choke at districts. The other schools take heat because they perform at the end of the season. SEP, ICW, and WSR have done it throughout the years. But it's wrestling. All schools do it. Some just have the talent in the room that others want to be a part of.

Waverly had a stud move there ten years ago. Recruiting? Hell no, stupid talk.

Great program with great S&C, though.

I'm honestly in favor of high school "recruiting". Not so much coaches actively trying to recruit widespread, but moreso kids and their families moving to a school that has a good wrestling program (workout partners/coaches). If a kid is considering wrestling in college and has the potential to earn an athletic scholarship, they should absolutely take advantage of resources/opportunities while in highschool to help them reach their goals. Of course academics have to be the priority and the family has to be in the right circumstance to move. It can't be solely for wrestling. But I really don't have a problem with wrestlers moving to a school that is going to make them a better wrestler.

I am in full agreement. I do see some parents moving their kids from great academic schools to dumps for sports. That's just stupidity.

I love the argument workout partners and better coaches. Let's use the loaded Bettendorf team a few years back as an example they supposedly had 6 D1 guys on there team. They were also coached by 4 time state champ. They had great wrestling community and school backing them. Maybe 1 of those kids will start D1 this year most of the kids are juniors and sophomores. Recruiting kills the sport of wrestling. Kids coaches and AD don't see point of building program if others are just going to steal ur talent anyway. It takes a program years to bounce back form major recruiting lose. I really don't have problem with kids moving there before there freshman year but just to move for wrestling is dumb. D1 scholarship are hard to get for every 15000 u spend on ur kid u might earn 1000 back in scholarship. North Scott had young man transfer in spent most of the season jv than at the end of the season was varsity and went to state. I would love to tell people when I was older 30-0 on jv my senior year 4-3 on varsity. SEP has sent a lot of kids on to wrestle in college but be honest how many are starting D1 wrestlers. To be D1 wrestler it genetics first. It doesn't matter where u went to high school

I think NH's addition is/was pretty well publicized. Was it recruiting? He wanted out of Cresco so is your last sentence true in this case?

Having a room others want to be part of is only a piece of the puzzle in some cases. Actively trying to get kids to move, including the offer of jobs for parents, is another story completely.

High school sports don't really matter in the big scheme of things though do they. It's not like recruiting is a widespread pervasive thing in high school wrestling. A few really good kids each year may move to a school with a better program or better workout partners.

Skill progression and improvement in wrestling relies on good workout partners much, much, much more so than most other sports. Basketball, baseball, even football you can get drastically better without having a great team around you. Wrestling demands that you have workout partners your size to push you. This is why I have no issue with kids moving to a school that has workout partners and will allow the kids to reach their goals.

Academics first of course.

We all will have our own opinion and view on what we "think" we know. I KNOW wsr had 2 kids move in who really had no ties to WSR. Any others moved in before hs and were part of the club growing up. Those are the facts. Doesn't really matter now though. They need some more transfers. Still a pretty good team but no where near the top of AAA any longer.

Cory Clark, Alex Meyer, Willie Miklus. Nolan hellickson will probably crack the lineup at Harvard. I think Dylan Blackford was an AA for Grand View last year.

I'm not trying to get people fired up. I believe SEP is top notch program but you named 3 D1 guysthat start and 2 maybe starter. I believe okie state had transfer heavyweight come in this year preventing Anderson form starting this year. I'm pointing out that practice partners or better coaching doesn't make differents. There are other programs in the state of Iowa that have produce couple D1 starter over the last 6 years. Also I know most of the schools that have produced D1 talent are some of the top programs in the state. My point is there are plenty of good coaches in the state of Iowa and practice partners don't make you that much better. With all the clubs and offseason camps these kids see plenty of each other.

These two sentences are a complete contradiction. Why do you think kids travel to clubs? For the practice partners. Having elite practice partners makes a huge difference. If you are a good, or especially if you're a great wrestler, you need people that can push you. Kicking the crap out of everyone on your team does absolutely nothing for you and you will not get any better.

Never let facts get in the way of a bad argument.
