Serious question: does the Iowa athletic department cheat?

And if not, why don't they?

The NCAA has shown that it only cares about cheating to the extent of temporarily placating an unruly crowd (provided that it doesn't fundamentally affect their bottom line), Iowa and the B1G make plenty of money, and even perennial cheaters are forgiven and applauded for their winning ways in a relative heartbeat.

Remind me I asked this question again when Louisville and SMU are making deep tournament runs next season. Sure, a one-season postseason ban really taught everyone their lessons.

We might get banned from the postseason for not cheating in a few years. Feels like that's the way the majority is going. Wish they would list all the school's crimes & scandals when they show each team's resume.

SMU bball says hello for it's recent academic fraud violations. Hawaii bball goes on probation next year for falsifying financial documents.

I could have sworn I was watching UNC play tonight .... Guess that punishment for academic fraud is taking an extra, extra long time to figure out... sigh .....

Yes,......but just very badly. Kind of a theme from the AD on down.

We're probably not making the tourney next season anyway for playing it straight. We should have cheated our way to a couple deep postseason runs then self imposed a ban on a down year. Fran has proven he has an eye for talent, now get them here by any means necessary.

Wow ...so some people really think we should cheat? I think we should be proud of the fact we don't. So would you have your own kids cheat ....I've taught my kid not to. But just because you all want to win a couple more games it's ok??? I think that's a slippery sloop you don't want to go down. And...if we did get caught you would be pissed about that too ..cant win with some of you.

Iowa isn't enough of a "name" school to get away with serious cheating in hoops.

Not only that, the Iowa City police force will never agree to a "call Fran first" type of deal.
The cops/deputies had no problem at all with the "Call Hayden First" deal. My source is a guy who was a law enforcement official at the time and is a Hawkeye fan, BTW. I think this kind of thing is fairly common everywhere.

If the university presidents wanted cheating to stop it would stop tomorrow. If they wanted a level playing field it would happen. If they were serious about it. Simple fact they don't care. All they would have to do is banish a coach if involved in cheating or had knowledge of cheating.

We are the type of program they would come down hard on if we were cheating at a high clip. They don't want to punish their main cash cows but wouldn't have any problem sticking it to a school like Iowa who is probably on that next rung in both main sports.

With that said, I would be surprised if there are not transgressions of some kind going on at every school.

Maybe in the mid 80s and early 90s this type of activity was going on in Iowa City. Of course, policing in general was different back then. Nobody had a high definition camera in the palm of their hand, ready to record what was happening when a police car rolled up to a scene. These days, if a player is arrested, it will be on Twitter within minutes and likely a video from either the cop's own dash cam or a pedestrian mobile phone will get out in the public.

But Hoiberg was to be called first approximately two years ago, from memory?

I wondered the same thing. Yahoo actually has a decent story on this final four and in it it talks about how UNC was able to extend the response timetable for the sake of the success of this team. Hope this link works.

Hopefully, this is just banter.

Every school has examples of cheating - some teacher gives the star athlete a break, some booster gives the star athlete a no-show job.

When I was in high school, my dad proudly told me he contributed $20 to the "recruit Jon Lazaar fund". When I got to school, he and Clay Hargrave were cruising around town in a TransAm with a license plate HAWK44. I'm sure it was a coincidence. ;) Do I think Iowa "cheats" like these examples? Sure.

It's places like North Carolina, that have academic fraud, or the stripper deal in Louisville, the rich booster in Miami that was partying with and paying players, Reggie Bush's parents getting a house to live in for free - consistent, organized, over-the-top cheating to gain an advantage in COLLEGE SPORTS that pisses me off.

Do I think Iowa cheats like those guys? No.

But, I know I am incredibly naive.

IIRC, that was 30 years ago,.......

The pinnacle of EIU's athletic accomplishments. "Don't stop beleeevin'" worked then, too.

MVC champs in 1912 with a 2-1-1 record and it has been all downhill for isu since then.

How long ago was that? Must ignore because isu grads demand it.

Hey MuskyCy,

Does isu have such a deep rooted tradition of sucking that they can't even cheat without sucking at that as well?

At least give us a selective time frame argument. Nothing proves isu's history wrong quite like a selective time frame argument isu grads are famous for.

You can do it. You can do it. You can do it.

When Iowa started winning under Hayden, the NCAA came to town to figure it out, because how could he do it?, according to some accounts, maybe Hayden's. And left, having found nothing. Jon Lazar, that's 40 years ago, as ISU would say.
