what kind of team r they going to be this year. I know we play them on Thursday night.

Interesting.

Apparently we play a Big East team worthy of fair consideration for the NCAA Tourney and even a Round of 64 win?

They are currently #37 on Kenpom, we are #55. But it is so early that matters little. This will be an excellent early contest to see where we are at. Would be great to get a W as we're certainly going to have slipups along the way. Let's put one in the bank!

And their PG went pro. I believe they have a kid we recruited (Delgado if memory serves).

It should be a good game. I cautiously predict a close loss (waiting for this team to prove it can win). Either way it should be a good barometer.

It will be a tough test. They got hot last year in the Big East tourney, but they lost their PG. It will be a very interesting matchup to see how well our forwards hold up on defense.

Carrington, their leading scorer so far, was a guard we had recruited. He and Delgado, a 6'10"/ 240lb forward, are juniors and they have a senior playing PG- yes they lost their stud PG from last year. They are more experienced and probably should be favored. Would definitely be s good win but not as shocking a one as Virginia would be.

Carrington and Rodriguez are the top returning offensive threats.
Delgado averaged nearly a double-double last year in the middle for them.

I think our Hawks have progressed from the exhibition game but I don't think they are ready for the tough teams yet.....that said I think sometimes playing the tough teams is a vital part of development to show what they need to work on and the level they have to play at to compete.

Can't wait for the next game!

Yup. I picked this game out as a "steal" for the Hawkeyes as it is a home game and SH has it's own kinks to work out without running everything through Whitehead. It may sound cliché but this is one of those who wants it more five individual guys verses five individual guys games where I don't think either team will be a unit yet. And I'm guessing in a situation like that Jok is the edge. Win or lose, the Hawkeyes should get a lesson in how well things will go without all that hard work if they follow the plan.

Delgado is a horse on the boards. They will need to put a body on him.
Carrington is smooth.

Rebounding and FT's will be the difference in this game. Iowa has to be better on the boards and also knock down their FTs. This will be a GOOD test for the young squad.

Iowa wins if they can keep turnovers under 15, shoot at least 70% FT as a team, and not get out rebounded by more than five boards.

SH will be favored, and a huge step up from the two bunnies we've played, but the game could be close, with probably Seton Hall pulling it out. ?TV for the game?

You have 4 starters back from the Big East champion. We've given up around 80 points to sisters of the poor. Both games we've struggled to rebound. Don't expect this to end well.

I love our athletic potential and think we can score, but our inside presence will be defended and the outside shots will be better contested. We'll know a lot more about where we are after this game, but I don't see us nearly consistent enough to be close at the end. I hope I'm wrong, but this is going to be a growing and learning year for our Hawks. We'll see some real encouraging signs every game, but we'll have our share of beer bottles at the TV too.

I think that's a very realistic analysis. I watched part of the SH game on TV yesterday. Athletic, disciplined, inside power, outside shooting....very mature and talented. This a game that we can use to measure how far we have to go.

I watched quite a bit of the SH-Central Conn St. game.
SH is athletic. Carrington is a scorer. Good handles. Shoots from anywhere.
Delgado is a beast inside. A rebounding machine that finishes offensively near the basket.
Plenty of other athletes on their team as well.
Iowa defense will have to improve, at least a little.
Keeping them off the offensive boards is important. Good, old-fashioned blocking out.

I'm hoping CW's back is OK and Fran was just limiting his minutes as a precautionary measure + JB could shoot at will vs Savannah. His D will be needed vs SH.

I'm not sure if we are ready for a team like Seton Hall less than a week into the season. But I also think its perfect timing...winning the game would be great but I'm sure Fran is looking forward to see how (and which) of the young guys perform against better talent.

If Iowa wins Thursday it should be considered an upset. Not an earth shaking upset by any means, a mild upset.
SHU is polished with good athletes and the ability to shoot it and score. Iowa won't shut them down, but they will have to limit them more than they have done against kennesaw and savannah.
I agree that it's good to have a game like this that's a test at this point in the season. A loss doesn't hurt them much, a win would be a nice boost.

FYI - I've seen Iowa projected to win by about 2 points (57% chance). Seems about right with people slightly favoring Seton Hall, but home court pushing it to Iowa.

In my mind, it comes down to a few things:
Can Cook match/exceed Delgado
Can Jok outshine Carrington OR can a secondary scoring option have a big game to offset
Can we keep the rebounding margin close

I'm not super concerned with turnovers, as they've been up from previous years, but that's to be expected losing two senior point guards. What are your other keys to the game? Who else are you looking to have step up?

I believe when we are on we can score with anybody in the country. The issue is defense, forcing turnovers, and crashing the boards.

In other words, my keys to the game are forcing turnovers and keeping the rebound battle close. We'll need to have somebody outside of Cook/Jok/Baer emerge as a consistent scoring threat.

I think we'll have enough O to win. We've had a lot of options emerge to help Jok. I'm worried about CW. I think we'll need his D to slow SH down enough to give us a chance. If he has a back issue, that may not happen.

Funny thing is the turnovers aren't coming from our point guards, they have been very good taking care of the ball

Our guards haven't been turning it over, but they haven't seen quick high D1 guards yet either.

Sometimes I think when you play a team with lesser talent & get ahead by 20 the intensity drops off. So, I'm hoping we can play with tenacity for 40 minutes. Also, a team can play your heart out and not make free throws only to lose after a great effort. Just as Purdue did against Nova. So, I'm hoping we keep it close to see who will make free throws for us.

Seton Hall represents an amazing test this early in the season for the Hawks. What Seton Hall excels at are some of the things we are working on. Even if we lose this game this game will help the Hawks take a positive direction on the learning curve. I've been very impressed with these young guys basketball IQ and willingness to learn and adjust. This will be a perfect game for them.

Fair point about the guards not being the turnover machines. I guess I made a bit of a bad assumption, but again, as long as the turn over ration stays reasonable (under 20%), I think we'll be fine.

I haven't had much opportunity to see much out of our freshman bigs (declined BTN+ or whatever knowing I had partial conflicts and hearing rumors of a poor product), so all I've seen is most of the exhibition game while dealing with a tired toddler. Are they scoring with legitimate post moves, or is it just being fed in great position/transition buckets/put backs?

I was at the opener and CHA was dead and half empty.

I'll be at this game; hoping for a better turnout. I know that CHA isn't one of the more imposing environments in college basketball for road teams, but it would be nice if there was more crowd engagement than a lot of games I've been to.

It would help if they brought back some sort of Black and Gold Blowout... I consider myself a more than casual fan, and I still wouldn't recognize anyone other than Jok, Baer, and Uhl if I saw them on the street. Our athletic department doesn't do a good job of introducing players and getting fans a look at the backup players. Perhaps it is by choice rather than neglect, but I get the sense they just don't feel like going through the effort of organizing the event.

I hope that this new crop of freshmen will continue the program's upward trajectory - as long as they win a game or two in the NIT, I think returning to the NCAAs next year wouldn't hurt whatever moment the Gesell/Woodbury class has built. If McCaffery can keep bringing in kids that pleasantly surprise and keep the nationally ranked recruits, it's just a matter of time before the fans get back behind a winning culture.

Unfortunately Carver will be a dud on Thursday night partially because as a crowd we are used to "dud" non conference games, so lots of lazy no shows.
Basketball has figured out it can make even more money if it schedules competitive games B1G vs BigEast & vs ACC in November.
But as for extending the bball season, as a crowd we aren't quite there yet & don't get too excited until January. Michigan State has it figured out, but they are breathing rarified Izzo air daily.
