Thinking that Fran might go BIG, early with

5 - Jack Nunge
4- Garzilla
3- Joe Weezie
2- JBo / CJ
1- Connor / Joe T

Jack is ready to roll. Patrick will be the next for the 3, 4, & 5, with Luka going to 5.

Going to be a really FUN Basketball season for Hawkeyes

I wouldn’t mind seeing that lineup for a few minutes each game. I don’t think Nunge starts. I see Connor starting at the 4 and JBo starting at the 1.

obviously CJF was out due to his foot surgery earlier during team workouts.... but Joe Toussaint was the 1 and Jordan Bohannon was the 2 a lot of the times.

I think may see different lineups based on matchups. A lot of flexibility in playing bigger or smaller, also have some guys that can potentially be defensive stoppers.

Key is going to be keeping our core guys healthy and out of quarantine.

Garza
Wieskamp
Bohannon
CMac
CJF
Toussaint
Nunge
PMac

JBo
CJF
JW
CMac
Luka

Joe T will play a lot with JBo and CJF playing the 2. (3 man rotation)
Patrick will back up the 3 and 4.
Jack will back up the 4 and 5.

Injury, foul trouble or a blow-out could pull Ulis into the 1-2 rotation, Perkins in at 3, a Murray into the 4, and JO into the 5. No one redshirts, as long as the freshman all buy in that minutes will be few.

This roster is as close to perfect as an Iowa fan can hope.

I just don’t see the advantage of playing Garza and Nunge together. Garza needs space to operate in offensively and it’s hard for Nunge to rebound if he’s playing the perimeter. On defense, it’s a nightmare for us because we are so slow. I’d much rather see Garza with a 4 guard offense.

I agree with 98% of this.....my only difference of opinion (yes it's a guess at this stage) is that some (at least 1 and maybe more) freshman will redshirt. The key dynamic in this (again my guess) is the health and ability of both Jack N and Patrick to be at full speed and contributing. IF that occurs then I see Josh O redshirting and one or both of the Murray's redshirting....just my guess.

In my opinion, no way Nunge starts being he is our only proven big man to back-up Garza.

I would like to see this starting line-up:

Garza
CMac
Wieskamp
CJF
Touissant

I would like to see JBO come off the bench and JBO in at the end of games for his FT shooting and clutch play. I like Joe starting to get him confidence and establish the Defensive presence. That doesn't mean that I don't think JBO will not get his minutes, I just would like him as the 6th Man to start the game.

I expect Nunge will be in the Kreiner role and McCaffrey in the Pemsl role (though very different players).

I like that we have 8 solid (assuming Nunge and Patrick are back and healthy) and than can have the 5 new guys fight for playing time and be back-end depth. If 1-2 of those guys step-up and can break into the regular line-up, that would only be a good thing. Just hoping Fran doesn't feel the need to go 11 deep.

And that is likely what Fran will see, as well.
However, I do think there will be bigger match-ups that will not favor the
4-guard offense. Fran has a lot of options, this year, interestingly with his own
2 sons being front & center in that mix. I'm happy to consult with Fran on that
& actually he knows how to contact me. This winter, except for my typical month of
January in Costa Rica, I'll be watching very closely. The Hawkeyes have got a LOT
going for them, this season. Should be Glorious!!
BTW: I expect Patrick and Connor to have really great years!

That will be needed, a lot, once again.
CJF does a pretty solid job on defense, as well.
And so does Luka, imho.

No doubt Fredrick is a good defender. But Toussaint is the real deal on D. Will be an All B1G defender is he gets the minutes he deserves.

I don't know if Fran can pull it off or not, but I agree. I would love to see Jbo like a reverse-starter schedule. Assume he will be on the floor for the final 6-8 minutes of the game, and then get him 30 minutes working backwards...with JT starting.

That gives us a tougher defensive starting lineup. As Jbo will likely be our weakest defensive spot in the rotation, it is easier to hide a defensive liability in the game plan when you bring him off the bench.

Don't hear me dissing Jbo, I think he is going to have a fantastic final season. He is just so valuable at the end of the games. And then if you can use him during the middle of the halves to retain shooting while CJ and JW are getting a blow.

Maybe he can win first team all-B1G AND 6th man of the year during the same season...that would be a fun trivia answer.

Go Hawks!

Toussaint was the best defender.

CJF was better and it really wasn't all that close. It is obvious JoeT never received any serious coaching at either end of the floor before he got to Iowa, which is why he was so frequently lost at both ends. He was a very good defender if you pointed at a guy and said, "guard him", but he was terrible in zone defense and if his man didn't have the ball he was all over the place, often way out of position.

Luckily it sounds like JoeT is working hard and accepting to coaching as he has some physical traits and an attitude that will be huge assets if he can harness them.

Good points on Toussaint off the ball but Fredrick could never put the clamps on Winston like Toussaint did. Then Fran sat Toussaint in the 2nd half & Winston had 19 of his 20 points.

Looks like Fran just said 2 or 3 of the new guys are going to play, so there's that

Fran is NOT going to bench CJ! He is one of the top 3 players.

Nunge won't start. He's not even fully cleared to play yet

If JoeT started and Bohannon came off the bench, he could honestly be in the running for 'Sixth Man of the Year" which would be nice recognition for him.

I'm curious if Bohannon's mobility has improved after his hip surgeries. There's no question in my mind that he's the starting PG over Toussaint. Given how well the lineup worked, I would be surprised if we don't see JBo start alongside CJ, Wieskamp, Connor and Garza. First three off the bench should be Toussaint, Nunge, Patrick. I would expect Ulis to be the first frosh off the bench. Beyond that, not sure about the other 4.

I know this is essentially a free year for football players, does anyone know if hoops guys can play this year without losing eligibility?

I need to see PMac succeed at something at this level before I put him in a immediate reserve role. I would not be surprised if a freshman or two are not ahead of him by the 2nd month of the season. I need to see it.

No way in hell Nunge starts. Garza a 4? Idk why I’m even responding to this. jbo, cj, weezie, connor Garza will start.

I am a little worried about depth at the 5. Is nunge a true center? If Garza ever gets in foul trouble we likely just play small and that’s my biggest concern this season.

He’s as tall or taller than both Garza and Kriener and playing at the same weight Woodbury did for pretty much his entire career. If Nunge can’t play center, that’s an indictment on Fran for not developing him at the position he has the best opportunity for long term success at

Edit: I would also guess that Nunge has been unfortunate enough to have to guard Garza most days in practice. I think he will do just fine at the 5

I guess I'd hope Nunge is far enough along in his recovery and development to relieve Garza for 10 minutes a game at center.

Joe T played 7:59 seconds in the second half of that game.....and Winston scored 8 points during those 8 minutes.
