Just felt like Shateah deserved her own thread. By all accounts a great kid, student and part of the Hawkeye culture that many programs hope to have but do not. Local product from Montezuma, IA. Unfortunately tore an ACL and that is a long road back. Best of luck to her and I hope she finds a landing spot where she can be a star.

Why are so many portelites coming off an injury? Including our Michigan fb. ones.

I'd imagine because it's hard to get your spot back in the pecking order after you've been out with an injury for a long time. Easier to come in full strength elsewhere for a fresh start.
I don't really think she was given a fair shot. Bluder over played her starters and did not utilize or develop her bench. Thought she looked good in limited action in the non-conference and I believe she will surprise at her next destination. Her injury wasn't holding her back it was the coaching staff.

An the two WR's that left Iowa who were both injured. Coaching staff? Yes, I know this is a BB *forum. But I was really asking generally==not about Wetering.

Good grief! You seriously are critical of this coaching staff?...the same staff that took this team to the championship game?

The players (mostly Caitlin) took us the national championship. The team has consistently been plagued with the same issues for as far as I can remember. Poor rebounding and defense. Bluder's in game adjustments this year were the best I've seen but that doesn't mean her overall philosophy is beyond reproach. She doesn't use her bench well. I'm not saying the staff is terrible at their job and should be fired. I'm saying that they could have done more to develop depth and find meaningful minutes for their bench. I think Wetering will be a very good player wheverer she lands and I think she deserved more playing time than she was given.

And....maybe she did have her fair shot and did not develop

Did you even watch her in non conference play? She shot the ball well and looked poised. She was hitting threes and slashing to the basket. She defended well and moved well. Bluder decided to go with a 7-8 player rotation in BIG games and against the higher ranked opponents which essentially killed any chance of player development for many of the bench players. I though McCabe was also underutilized this year.

There's a reason that those of us that have followed WBB regularly have been critical of her bench usage.

Lisa could use her bench better, she's often said so herself in the past. I'm just glad she closed the folder on the platoon system. She prefers a shorter rotation of players who have proven they can produce in the minutes they get in early season games.

Shateah was given a shot pre-season and early season to earn the backup 4 spot. She was beaten out for those minutes by Hannah Stuelke, Sydney Affolter, and then Kate Martin fills when needed too. I would find it hard to replace either of these players with Shateah, not that she wasn't a good teammate but she just couldn't win the job. Hopefully she'll be able to reach her goals at her next stop.

It was really just Hannah and Kate. Syd subbed the 2-3 when she was in. Hannah is an amazing athlete so I have no issue with her getting playing time. But we could have gotten Wetering minutes when Hannah was subbing the 5. Kate is a highly capable 4 as a sub, but she limits herself by not being aggressive. She needs to play like she did in the BTT last season and attack the basket.

Not a fan of the platoon system but she could have subbed her deeper reserves in 1-2 minute spurts and given the starters more breaks. I was really counting on Wetering being the #2 at the 4 behind Martin next season with Syd/Kylie sharing the 3.

I know most are predicting Hannah as the 4 next season but I think she may be the starter at the 5 given how well she subbed the 5 this season.

Sydney rarely played the 2, most of her minutes were at the 3 and early in the season the 4. Shateah was behind all those other players that could play the 4 was the issue and why she didn't get many minutes. Her injury surely didn't help her either but she failed to win those minutes.

Hannah will be the 4 next season, outside of early in the season she didn't get to show her entire skill set off which I assume will only improve this off-season. Coaches had her focus more on what the team needed instead. It's still early we don't know if all 3 of the true posts will be back next year, we'll know by May 11.

Outside of Tania Davis most of the players coming off a knee injury under Bluder doesn't see much playing time the first year back. And Tania tore her ACL in her other knee that first year back. I would have rather seen Sheteah stay and Martin move on. BEST of WISHES to you Sheteah.

I agree she probably didn't get the fairest shot but I wouldn't consider 30% FG shooting and 33% FT shooting to be very good. 33% 3pt FG% is decent. She also had almost as many turnovers as rebounds in limited action. I really hope she finds a place to excel because she is athletic and a great team mate.

Good luck to her in her future. Once a Hawkeye, always a Hawkeye.

I wonder if those WE... HAVE..... NO..... SLOTS!!! people ever considered that Lisa had already talked to some of these women about their future plans? They presented themselves as experts on what Lisa would do. They look kind of foolish now.
Which is exactly what I said yesterday, BUT that doesn't go with the narrative that the "you said we didn't have an opening" crowd wants to point to......

I would agree with this,we could have used her help especially on defense. Best of luck to Shateah, hope she has a great career at her new landing spot!

Gabe, not pooping here but how could anyone judge her by playing in games? She hardly played. You could be right about her future but there isn’t exactly much “game tape” to judge.

I watched her play and she wasn't that great.

having the greatest to ever play womens bball might have helped. its ok to question things. i for one always wondered why shed play the starters up 20 late in the 4th in regular season games. why not develop the bench? even in the champ game it would have been nice to throw them a bone when the game was out of reach the last minute.

I also thought this at times during the season. While the results don’t likely change, after the NCG I still wondered if even one of our bench players like McCabe had gotten more playing time during the season if that may have helped with the foul trouble we found ourselves in in that game. She was a good shooter in the limited minutes we saw her this season and it made me wonder if she could have been our “Carson” in that situation. Again, a lot of “what ifs” here so make of that what you will.

I think multiple messages on the board are/were getting jumbled. When Morrow, Betts, and Van Lith entered the portal everyone was obviously interested. A few people pointed out that it would take a transfer out to land any of them.

Then that damn Betts to Iowa article came out and things went crazy. People took it as true and started suggesting all sorts of ways that Iowa could free up a scholarship for Betts. They ranged from things the staff almost certainly wouldn't do to things that might not actually be possible.

Now Iowa actually does have a scholarship due to Wetering's transfer but none of the top transfer targets are linked to Iowa. If anything, the best sourced rumor we have is that the coaches would rather use the scholarship on a 2024 recruit.

I'm sure the coaches knew before today Wetering would enter the portal. How long ago they knew is an open question.

Where do you come up with this “none of the top targets are linked to Iowa” and “we wouldn’t be interested” BS? I mean, Murrow says she wants to go to a Big Ten school, Betts clearly has Iowa connections, etc. I get so tired of people declaring “that ain’t gonna happen” cuz “we are just poor little Iowa” and “we can’t expect any real stars coming here.” “We just wanna stick with our home grown insecurity.” “We got no schollies!”

That BS needs to stop. It’s a self-fulfilling negative prophecy that I’ve seen over and over on this board in the last decade in men’s football and now sprouting in tha WBB arena. That BS needs to stop.

For Christ’s sake, Iowa just played in the National Championship and has the national WBB player of the year on the squad for at least one, and maybe two, more years! Get over this “loser’s limp” attitude.

There is no credible report that any of these players have serious interest in Iowa. That's where I get it from. Leistikow and Linder wouldn't be making the comments that they are publicly if Iowa was seriously in the running for any of these transfers at the moment.

Things could change. The players haven't announced what schools they are transferring to yet. But I'm just trying to reset expectations a bit, because it feels like a decent portion of the fanbase expects a mega transfer will be announced before the end of the week. We have no good reason to expect that to happen.

And we have no good reason to not expect it to happen, either. All of these uncredible reports are speculation. Like I said, the FACTS are that Betts played with OGrady in high school, they are friends, she also played with Clark on international teams, she’s following Harmon on social media. Who wouldn’t want to play with Clark?

Could it happen? Sure. Could it not happen? Sure.
But why are you and others keep trying to say “no go” based upon what Lestikow and Linder say? Hell, they don’t know.

The players executed the plan that the coaching staff gave them. Without the coaching staff, South Carolina would have won the championship.

I'd hate to see Hannah at the 5 next year as she's proven she can play in space and drive the ball to the hoop. I think she's a natural 4 and our best option there.

Hard to disagree w/ the coaches, but I agree we did not use the bench well this year. Heck, even Stuelke should have played more given her production. McCabe should have a beef too given her ability to hit 3's in a few games - She never really got a chance and we stuck behind "all world defender" gabby marshall. I think Shateah had some skills but she looked lost out there in her extremely limited minutes. I'm sure a lot of that was probably pressure she put on herself to produce in the 2 minutes s he was given. She was never really given the chance to get into the flow of the game - like most of the other reserves......

Or at least not entirely wrong........

Because we're Iowa and we can't have nice things, or things that would help to make it any easier to win a championship...............it's okay, I finished it for you. ;)

Big fan of McCabe as well. yes i think giving them experience throughout the less important early season games could have been beneficial for the tournament, rather than just proclaiming "well none of them are ready yet." she is the definition of a shooter who could get really hot in times like that. Love Bluder but i do think it's a valid nitpick. we clearly needed a deeper group once the foul problems started.

I figured these forums are places where us fans can engage in rank speculation, unreasonable expectations and foolish game strategy. Our friends and relatives are tired of hearing about it, so we must vent someplace.

The truth is there is now a roster spot open. The Final Four revealed a weakness in Iowa's roster - a dominant rebounder and force in the middle. Absolutely nothing against Monica, but those are not strong points of her game. Bluder's game plan against S. Carolina worked well and allowed Iowa to work around that deficiency. A similar plan against LSU looked good on paper but a bench player from LSU foiled that plan (that and those scoundrel refs ;) ).

So, why not Iowa for one of these transfer portal women who have the very skill that Iowa desperately needs to make another run next season? Until it doesn't happen, I'm a believer that something good will happen.

wetering was certainly not underutilized. You could make a case for McCabe or even stulke getting more minutes but not wetering.
Molly davis was my only real question: she never seemed to hit a basket when it mattered, most of her 3's were out of conference against low level schools.
