At the risk of coming across as Captain Obvious, this is a toxic world we live in today. Not sure why the rush to rain on someone else’s parade. Remember this... Someone else’s opinion of you is none of your business. “Keep your head to the sky” (EWF)

Sherman has been at Iowa as long as Fran has. I'm sure he's a great person, but after 9 years it's time for him to retire and spend more time with his family.
Other then having the title of assistant coach, does any one know what he actually does to improve the players long term?
Not trying to be a SmartA, just recognizing the fact that something needs to be done within Iowa basketball to change the culture. A defensive specialist would be a welcome addition to the staff.

I agree but year 9 and Fran and his crack staff can't figure out that a roster full of spot up shooters needs a PG who can create. JBo is an elite shooter but we have a coaching staff that cannot figure out how to get him shots unless he fires from 25. A big reason is no PG. So one of the best shooters in the big ten struggles to even get a slightly contested shot while other teams get their shooters looks. See McQuaid at MSU.

Fran won't change anything--we heard all of that spin last year about "getting the wake up call". Real change would be an admission something is wrong and Fran's ego could not tolerate someone coming in and validating this. A $400K bonus says "Great job Fran!"

Sadly, Barta gives coaches contracts that affords this kind of attitude and approach. Its like the 'what are you going to do, fire me?' approach.

What is he going to change when he cant land a pg?

The change needs to come in recruiting but I don't think Fran can perform in this area.

Hes set his sights on some good ones and struck out then tried for some mid major types like Clemons, Williams, Dickerson, ect and didn't get very much out of them either.

He really needed to land Carton. I think that was probably his last chance to turn this around.

I didn't think Connor was going to be a big factor in Cartons decision but I'm thinking it was. He must have been scared of competing because he choose an non factor program in OSU over Michigan too.

Iowa Basketball has been raining on my parade for the last four weeks but you don’t see me pouting like a baby on Twitter about it.

Wouldn't an eight game improvement in over all record (14-19/22-11), rising from 13th to 6th in conference and a qualification for the field of 64, together with an improvement in defensive efficiency by around 100 spots (the list wasn't numbered I'm just too tired to count the exact order) constitute evidence of a significant improvement? Isn't substantial improvement in performance and outcome, with a team that still returns all five starters, itself evidence of good coaching by the existing staff?

Sherm is not the problem. I doubt Sherm would put a Team together without a true PG.

Agreed. Unfortunately, he's not the answer either, and its time that Fran find someone who is, and replace some of this staff, or do some serious self reflection. I may not be in "the coach has to go club" , but something has to change. In all honesty if we had played a tougher non-con this year, we're in the NIT again with maybe 18 wins. Should we really be OK with that?

Any EWF reference is top notch in my book! I do remember in an interview Sherm said if there was group to see in their prime for him (and me) it was EWF!

Why is a comparison to an unacceptable season being made?

This was a good season, but, comparing it to last season is a bad look

Why do you think like this? All Fran needs to do is have a bad year every 4 years and you'll be happy that he'll improve them the following year.

Sherman Dillard is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. And he has forgotten more about basketball then most coaches will ever know.

thats probably due to the excessive drinking and what it does to brain cells.

or it may be that he was never all that good of a coach to begin with.
Actually, that is a slightly altered version of a famous Bob Knight quote.

We really don't need Fran's assistants going all Bob Knight on us, probably..

My thoughts are informed by the last 45 years of watching Iowa basketball. Of course last year was unacceptable. I'd be in the coach has to go club had last year been repeated. But it wasn't repeated. The team performance significantly improved. Over the last 30 years 2019 was certainly better than average.

As of now we return all five starters and 2 of top 3 reserves. We bring in a highly ranked recruit at the same position of the one bench player losing. If this team remains intact I expect further improvement next year. I'm thinking more like 13-7 in the Big Ten games. Moving from a ten to a five or six seed.

Just wait until Friday after we lose to Cinn..This crowd will be out in force...
Barta gone, Fran gone, Ferentz gone and Brands gone. This board is a happy place to visit...
Can' t get rid of Bluder until after next year:p

Im just looking for that next step. Fran has proven he can get to 20 wins at Iowa consistently. That shouldn't be an accomplishment for him anymore.
3rd place was nice and a couple more would be great, maybe an upset win against Cincy and Tenn, BTT title or deep runs consistently, marquee non conference wins. Those are my idea of next steos for him and Iowa.

John wooden has forgotten more about basketball than 99% of coaches have ever known, that doesn't mean he should be propped up on the sidelines attempting to coach right now.
Have you ever had a conversation with Sherm? Ever seen how he handles practice? Ever heard what he says on the bench? Ever heard him speak at a coach's clinic? If you cannot answer yes to these ??? then go away cause you don't know what you are talking about.

Sherman Dillard gets Iowa in the door with a lot of recruits that Iowa would otherwise have no chance of recruiting.
Are we getting those players? The last a couple years have been mostly two of Fran's kids, Fredrick, and super Joe W. an Iowa kid all the way. Do you belief we wouldn't have got these players without SD?

No, we are not getting all of those players. Getting a foot in the door is the beginning. But Iowa has been close and they have got a few commitments from it (TC comes to mind) so it has helped.

Look, some of you seem to have a hard on for Sherman but I don't think you really have a leg to stand on. Tell me ONE thing he has done that has caused an issue for Iowa. I have pointed out the obvious good he has done, so please come back with something solid or don't come back at all.
