Sherrone Moore in as Michigan HC

I think this is a bad hire, but understandable given the timing.

He'll last 3 seasons max.

Thoughts?
I agree, he's not Jim Harbaugh.
I think it falls apart pretty quickly. Much more to being a head coach than standing on the sideline acting like one when the real one is still running the company.

Yeah. I am not sure this (Moore) will last long. The only thing he proved as a head coach was he can manage blue blood program for a few weeks and not screw it up.

Was he even the head coach on Sunday through Friday in those three weeks?

I really liked the offense Moore ran at Michigan this year. A lot of misdirection and in general a tough team to prepare for.

Absolutely agree. Certainly the “feel good” hire but think this will be short lived. A program like Michigan is taking a huge gamble on someone who has never been a head coach.

Interesting timing - did they actually talk, let alone interview anyone else?

Bama, Washington and now Michigan - 3 programs at the very top of CF, and they hire someone in a few days?

Yes, Iowa is slow and methodical. But those seem like panic hires.

Time will tell, but throw my name in the hat predicting this won’t last long. Editor’s Note: My last such prediction was Lovie Smith and as well as other previous Illinois HC’s. 😉

This feels more like one of those “we had to do it” hires. He filled in nicely those 3 games Harbaugh was gone, gave a colorful speech on national TV after a big win, and seemed to be well liked by current players. But being head coach over the long haul is a totally different animal. Personally I don’t think he’ll last more than 3 years, but who knows.

Agree 100.

It will be interesting to watch what happens at Bama and Michigan the next few years as the B1G and SEC expand and we go into a 12 team playoff. Those are major, major HC positions.

Bama has already removed a ton of support staff (analysts, etc.) that Saban had in place, and their HC has zero experience in the animal that is southern football.

As mentioned in a previous thread, this is Sherrone's first head coaching job. Michigan. After three straight B1G titles and a Natty. The last guy who was promoted from within was Lloyd Carr, who worked out well but had already been at Michigan for like 15 years before he took the HC role. After him and before Jim...meh.

We'll get a a good early read on things with both teams. Bama is at Wisconsin the 3rd week and hosts Georgia week 5. Texas rolls into Michigan the second week and then hosts USC week 4.

Both teams will be lucky to split those games.

Again, you need to start watching something other than the Big Ten West. My guess is Lovie Smith would have done okay at Michigan.

A lot of red flags here:

1. Really hard to follow someone who was successful because you can't really come in on day 1 and overhaul the program. Just as the shadow of Saban will be hovering over DeBoer in Bama, Moore will just be continuing what Harbaugh did. Think Frank Solich.
2. Moore hasn't been a HC yet so he doesn't have an identity of a true "program" that is his. All he knows is Harbaugh's program.
3. He seems to be a true player's coach and is afforded the "white hat" because of him being an assistant. A strong leader must also be a "black hat" too and there is no evidence he has been that. Very difficult to be a player's friend and mentor at the same time. Think Bobby Williams at MSU.

Overall, the skill set needed to be a head coach is vastly different than being an assistant coach or position coach. Kind of like the difference between being a parent and a step-parent. Different roles. There are only so many great CEO/Head Coaches and we are very lucky to have had 2 of them in the last 40+ years.

Smart money is that he gets fired in a couple of years and ends up back on Harbaugh's staff as a position coach.

I am sure glad u r here to prognosticate about another team's hire. I wish Moore decent success unless they play iowa and depending on the opponent's record.

U r welcome.

This entire message board is based on prognostications.

I too wish him luck. But I've seen this movie many times before, and it never ends well.
