Sherwyn Thorson passed away today. My brother is married to Sherwyn's sister, and "hero worship" is a mild reference to the admiration I have always had for this man.

Wikipedia's biographical notes:

Sherwyn Arthur Thorson (born May 10, 1940) was a Canadian football player who played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He won the Grey Cup with them in 1962.[1] He played college football and wrestled at heavyweight with the University of Iowa, placing 2nd in 1960 and 1st in 1962. Thorson is a member of the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame (2007) and University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame (2011).

Sad. One of the great hawks. To my knowlege he was the only football all-american/NCAA wrestling champ combo ever.

He came to Iowa for football but went out for wrestling to beat the guy that defeated him in the heavyweight finals in high school. Obviously he accomplished quite a bit more than that.

A sad day for Iowa fans, Sherwyn Thorson was truly a great athlete. Younger followers on this board will not have seen Sherwyn wrestle for the Hawkeyes (under coach Dave McCuskey) or play football (under coach Forest Evashshevski) but among the ‘veterans’ of this board Sherwyn was truly one of the greats. My condolences to the Thorson family.

Sorry for your loss Sir.

R.I.P. Mr. Thorson.

Curley Culp was 1st team All American in football and an NCAA wrestling champ. That's the only other one I found.

I found a few other wrestling champs who were Pro Bowl or MVP NFL/AFL players, but not college AA.

And there are several more who were AA in both, but not wrestling champs.

Anyway...RIP.

Thanks pablow, burk11, wasd21, 23sofar, ping72 for the kind words. Great insight to the rarity of people who have achieved All-American football / wrestling national champion status.
