Just heard that a new trophy was being commissioned for Friday's game. The Linda Lovelace trophy will be presented to the loser for the team that sucks moreOpposition here. No, Kirk and the Ferentz family should not be judged poorly if they lose to Riley and Nebraska. It is important to consider where both programs are at the moment.
Iowa has had huge highs and bad lows this season. No doubt. Nebraska has been dumpster fire material in most respects. Iowa beat OSU, at the time in the hunt for the CFP.
Nebraska has spent the season on the ropes and the current coaching staff has never really shown an ability to compete at a high level. Ferentz and Co have done so repeatedly, if erratically.
Ferentz is also an Iowa asset, widely respected, admired as the longest serving coach in the Big Ten, and is a great man for fundraising.
I think you keep Kirk for a couple years, wait for that astonishingly good year, and you know it is coming. Kirk will finish Iowa in the Top 10 in the next few years. THEN, go after a hot young prospect, as long as you can talk your admin into doing this instead of passing the mantle to Brian.
Then you might draw a great young coach with resume and energy. Not saying you can't do that now, but the buyout will be much less in a couple years.
But what do I know? I am a Husker fan, so my lens is likely distorted in looking at all this.
I do look forward to our Friday game. It should be a fabulous disaster or a blowout for someone. Not sure what is more likely.
That made me laugh a little bit...I sorta hope you give it to Brian.
