SIAP How was crowd/atmosphere today?

On TV they sounded loud early and for most of the first half. In the 2nd I didnt notice them much.

Pretty much agree with previous posters. Good attendance but not loud. Iowa-Dayton game in Orlando was much more intense, though one third the people.

Carver never sounds loud on TV. I can't remember if it was last year or the year before, but I was at the Minnesota game and it was deafening in there. Then came on the boards afterwards and people were remarking at how quiet the crowd was.

Carver just translates really really badly to television.

Carver gets loud, but it doesn't sound as loud on tv as it really is. But it's never going to be as loud as some other places, just not made that way.

Yes, and when you put the students in their little corner vs lining the sides of the court like other schools do, that effects the atmosphere as well.

It was most certainly the best Crowd of the season.
Very good, but this team and this group of Seniors deserves even more.

Will I get louder as the season progresses and the game become more important (not that January games are unimportant)?

It was a good crowd for CHA, which is never going to be mistaken for cameron or even hilton for that matter.
Awesome start had people up as much as you're going to get there.
Lots of empty seats in student section.
Purely as a spectator it was a good game to have the ebb and flow of Iowa getting up, then falling asleep for a while before turning it back on again.

Very loud, good crowd for 1 degree Fahrenheit. It was definitely a plus for the team. There were times I could not hear the person next to me. The students were back but not organized. I am hoping that some of them step forward and try to get something going. There were probably 1500 tonight that were on their feet most of the game. It would only take a group of 30 or so to lead and they could probably get the rest to follow.

No.

1500 = 10% of capacity. There are 28 sections at Carver. Not even close to filling close to 3 sections.

I thought the crowd, but mostly the student section, were extremely weak today, considering we're a rising top 10 team that just swept ranked MSU and ranked Purdue and is in the middle of an awesome winning streak. There were times in Carver today when you could hear a pin drop. Disgraceful. And not just the students, there were tons of empty seats and I saw entire rows empty in some sections. You would think we could manage a few sellouts these days but apparently winning and being ranked isn't enough.

For the people in attendance saying that it Wasn't loud, I'd be interested in hearing what row you sat in. The design of Carver makes it louder on the floor than in the crowd. I've been to many games at near court level and it can get plenty loud down there. Much worse than it sounds on tv.

To bad you weren't there in person. Or for that matter the last decade to compare it to other crowds.

Student section sucks. They are so weak. Need to reduce the amount of season ticket sales to this group. Team deserves much better support.

The loudest I can remember CHA being (on tv) in a very long time was the NIT game vs. Dayton a few years ago. The crowd was really loud. Not having season ticket holders filling the arena really changed the nature and sound volume of the crowd. It was a fantastic environment to see. Wish we could see more crowds like that one.

Agree

I thought overall the crowd was pretty weak for as many people that were there and how well the game went. As others have mentioned, I've seen far smaller crowds make a lot more noise.

My biggest issue though is with the PATHETIC student section. I'm an alum and current grad student. I sat down there today row 4 and the students just mostly stood there like they're bored or something. I made more noise than anyone within two sections of me and I'm not a loud guy. Only occasionally did the students make any noise when the Hawks were on defense after a big play. It was pitiful. These students don't know how Carver used to be. When I was an undergrad, I went from the undefeated at home season under Alford through year two under Lickliter, so I've been to the full gamut of crowds and games. I remember games beating Mich St and Wisconsin at home and thought the roof was going to blow off Carver. Five sections wide top to bottom full of students and it was LOUD. Used to have to get to games three hours early for decent seats. Now the student section is nothing. Makes for little to no sort of home court advantage from a crowd noise perspective. Which is sad because this team deserves their full support.

This. Dolph was ripping the students in pregame. Uncalled for IMO. Give them good seats. Not nose bleed. Put them on the floor, for a good 10 rows in half the sections - Including both baskets. GENERAL ADMISSION. The most rabid of student fans would be on the floor hazing the opponents, at the top of their lungs. It would be contagious to the rest of the crowd... That alone would make Carver alive. Every Game!

In a few sections at half-court, You could block a few rows behind the students for the old facts, who are too frail to stand up and cheer for their team. OR make it general admission to the public. Fans that really want to be there. They deserve a few good seats. If only a couple hundred.

The tickets would be first come-first served. It would bring a better crowd, a better atmosphere to Every Game.

I thought the crowd was pretty loud in spots. The students make a huge difference when they are in force. The White out looked much better on TV than it did at Carver. It was a fun, fast game to watch, probably close to 20 made 3 pointers.

this ..said it perfectly...

I've said this in other threads, but am not sure if it is a good idea. Why not honor the football players and coaches at halftime of a game (maybe Purdue?) then save seats for the players. It would get pretty loud with all the football players imo. They could allow students to get in free if they can't give free reserved seats to the football players.

This is exactly right. I have sat with the students, 10 rows from the top and nearly courtside the past few years and being down close to the court it was WAY louder than up top, naturally. I think the crowd is fine, just keep winning. We talk about the crowd and arena way too much.

*And if the students want better seats, maybe they should come to games. They are never going to put the students behind the benches when only 100 kids show up. that would be even more embarrassing

they have in the past & will this year...they may not announce ahead of time (which is stupid) .. yes its gets loud during half time when they do it..any football player can attend a game...some of them don't because the sport of basketball isn't really an interest.

the number of students yesterday was decent..just seems they were waiting for the team to do something to get excited...maybe the 3:30 start time on a sunday got in the way of the sunday afternoon nap (after a Saturday night-returning from Xmas break)

When they did this in 2002, Ferentz got a loud ovation when he walked out of the tunnel to his courtside seats. This was while the ball was in play in the first half. Then they did the team with the trophies during halftime. That was pretty loud too. After halftime, it didn't matter because most of the team left. Only a handful of players stayed. So, other than halftime and when Ferentz came out, it didn't make a difference to noise level.

Thanks. I was thinking if the first 4 rows of the student section were full of football players it would energize the student section and the whole arena. Imagine guys like Jaleel Johnson and CJB getting the crowd pumped up.

you notice Ferentz no longer sits courtside?.... hasn't for several years now...on the games he attends..he kind of slips in..staff section about row 25.

A lot probably missed the game due to being hungover after celebrating the victory by the World Champions over the Chiefs.

IMO Barta could really cement his legacy at Iowa if he would make a renovation of Carver as discussed recently in the Gazette and in another thread here the next big project. Iowa certainly can find the money to do it between BTN revenues and if we have continued success in football. Raise the roof and put the big donors in suites. Then put the students in bleachers where they belong along the sidelines and make those general admission seats if they don't sell.

We tend to pile on the students and blame them for their apathy but what does Iowa do to try to attract them to the games and create a better crowd atmosphere? Carver has a built-in disadvantage to start with its distance from the main campus. And while the idea of starting over and building something better seems attractive on its face it also doesn't seem realistic given the money we just put into the attached practice facility.

Let's stop wasting energy on blaming and start figuring out what we can do to make Carver better.

Btw look at where Wisconsin students sit. At the end behind the basket and they fill it up for a 500 team. And they are loud and proud. Yes I understand they went to two final fours but we currently have a final four potential team, been to the tourney the past two years and can't fill out for a Sunday afternoon game against Michigan? It is, without a doubt, the worst student section in the conference given the product on the floor. Put them CLOSER to the floor? Hell no!!!!! If they want to stay away now and play video games instead of supporting the team why reward this behavior. Screw it. Sell fewer tickets to students. Sell discounted tickets to other schools around the area. Bottom line they are not going to show up and GOD forbid the team should lose a game then that is all the rational needed to not come back the rest of the year. Where else would this be happening with the team we have right now.....nowhere.

I understand the mindset and many fans look at the situation we have and resist the idea of moving the students which I don't really understand as I think you could easily fill that section of seats with general admission if the student tickets don't sell. In response to your post no reason to compare our situation to Wisconsin nor anybody else. We have choices to make about how we can improve the atmosphere at Carver and attract more of our students. We can throw in the towel and just assume they will never come or try to improve things from a marketing and structural standpoint.

You would think we could fill up Carver even in sub-zero weather with this team at this point and IMO we have more issues than just trying to get more students to the games. Those of you who live in Iowa and attend games know the issues we have at Carver way better than I do watching on tv. At some point I think we will have to grapple with it and with the basketball program on solid footing for the foreseeable future this seems an opportune time to start seriously thinking about how we move forward with the facility.
