sigh

Um , he is not a new coach. He has been around a long, long time. Don't get me wrong - VT didn't do a bad thing at all, just don't see how you can cater to 15 studs at the same time...it seems more like a slumber party than anything else.

I think the idea is you bring them all in together and get them sold on the idea of coming in together. They get to have a blast, hangout with other like minded wrestlers, and experience the campus together. Why do you think we have all of our top recruits come in together? The same idea.

He is a new head coach isn't he. I though he was the assistant g=for a long time. Hey give the guy credit. He is thinking out of the box. He may not land any of these recruits, but they may say something to others and down the road it may pay dividends.

I'm starting to wonder about that....they've even said they don't like recruiting. Hard to work harder than everyone else when it's something you don't want to do.
I get that. From what I can recall Gable was a terrible recruiter. He had other people do it and he concentrated on the kids he was training. He usually got in the game late and still got the kids because of the results he was having. TnT may well have had this attitude and now they are having to readjust. I would hate to recruit also.
They say getting to the top is easier that staying on top. (What Gable did was amazing.) TnT are finding out just how true that statement is. Iowa now has at least 2 places with more money and resources than them. They have to get resources, recruits, and results. It will take time and it seems to me they are addressing each issue at as quick of a pace as they can.

Hidlay will be at WNO now and that was the same weekend he was suppose to go to Purdue. Wonder if he reschedules the visit or not?

Yup. And you can't do much better than Lane Stadium at night and the beautiful Va countryside in the fall.

These excuses are hilarious. Actually, they are sad. Claiming that they’re just going to see the football game claiming that VT is in a downward spiral claiming that we’re still going to get a good recruiting class, claiming that recruits are looking at other places because other places have a lot more money is all just blind faith. The bottom line is that you need to bring in recruits to get them. We are not bringing them in. We seem to contact kids their senior years. We don’t even contact three time Fargo winners at a weight of need. Someone made the excuse on here that we don’t want to contact Brooks because it might scare Hilday off. Hilday not even committed to us.It’s embarrassing effort at recruiting. Lee, Warner, Kem, Marinell over three years is an exception. We’ve done nothing else to back it up. These are ridiculous excuses I’m hearing. This is a coaching failure, a program failure. To compare our recruiting to other top programs and somehow Make excuses about it is Complete denial. This problem with holes in our lineup that aren’t planned out in advance has been going on for years. Brands has to accept the fact that he’s not a recruiting coordinator and fix the problem. We need a full-time recruiting coordinator. This person can start recruiting kids when they are freshman in high school. And stop using the money excuse (Penn State doesn’t), and stop using the “hard to recruit to Iowa“ excuse. It’s not. We’re not even contacting kids. Brands has blind faith that his system is working. It’s not. I think he can teach wrestling very well. He teaches toughness very well. I still question some of his strategic decisions in matches and think he is probably not quite as good at that. However he is a very poor recruiter. He may be good one on one recruiting kids, but directing the recruiting of a program, a program that considered itself tops in the nation, he is not very good.

PSU has what, four of the top five prospects for 2018 already? And, they might get Iowa’s top high school prospect at a weight that one of those guys might be at. WTF? Who is Lee going to wrestle against in practice (iron sharpens iron) if the post grad freestylers are gone at tournaments or training? We have real questions at several weights next year. That shouldn’t happen at Iowa. At 184, Who wrestles if Downey doesn’t make it? Can we even be competitive at that weight? How many programs has Downey gone through?

We have Clark, Delgado, Gilman, and McD. Is that not enough? Where would Lee have a better workout partners? Not getting this.

We have a lot of ? but I think this year is not going to be the write off year everyone is thinking it will be. Sounds like a very good chance Lee goes this year. If Lee & Downey get into the lineup this year I honestly think we have a chance to score more points this year than we have since we won it. Not sure we will be able to win it going up against 2 of the better returning teams we have seen in some time but it is hardly going to be what most are predicting.

I think some people need to calm down. There are a lot of positive things going on now.
- We are loading the HWC with talent. This is going to pay off more than people think. One of the secrets to turning unheralded recruits into AAs is having them day in and day out have stud after stud to work out with in the room. The HWC members will help here a ton.
- We seem to have shifted our attitude on transfers. I am not sure if this is the coaching staff or the admin being more transfer friendly but I love this. I was always frustrated by how it seems Okie State would always get some stud transfer to fill a weight that looked like was going to be a huge hole. If 133 is wide open and people know that Iowa welcomes transfer we are going to have some kids come knocking in this off season.
- We just landed the #1 recruiting class last year. A lot of that was because of the work this staff did to get Grapple on the Gridrion and the World Team Trials to Iowa City. Remember that? Yeah there were a ton of recruits visiting those weekends. Guys like Spencer Lee, Jacob Warner, Max Murin, Teasdale ....

We have 2 great recruits in this class so far. We landed 2 huge impact transfers in the off season. We have a very good chance at Hidlay. I have not heard we are out of the running for Sasso. I have to think if Lee wrestles this year that we could maybe use that to open the door back up with Teske. It would give a lot more wiggle room in there for one of them to get up to 133 and Teske maybe sneak a year in at 125 while Lee red shirts. I mean he would essentially have 2 of them left with 2020 right around the corner. I think this is something PSU uses to their advantage in the recruiting pitch. They have so many guys wrestle as true freshman that they can get creative with future lineup scenarios with recruits.

I totally agree with your post. If Lee goes this year and I think he will, I think Lugo should go 41 this year if he can hold the weigt. IMO that's a title contending team.

Maybe if you have no shot at a kid he gets in the ear of some of the other guys about how great ______ is and how they should all go there.

I am guessing that if they are on an unofficial visit then they aren't spending their own money on a trip. By the time they are on an official the staff probably has a solid idea they have a shot. If your logic is followed they should only bring the commitments on campus. I think the pros outweigh the cons on getting kids on campus to dispel the negative recruiting being utilized against the rabbit hunting robots. Not everyone is as open minded as Lee.

I'm on the boat that says let Lee (if healthy), Lugo (if he can make it), and Warner go. I believe that team would compete for a title and I would love to see Brands make this move. Yet, I doubt he does because I beleive he has said he wants the best for the individual successes of the athletes, not the team. But just imagine this lineup
125: Lee
133: Glynn? I'm not sure who else here
141: Lugo
149: Sorensen
157: Kemerer
165: Marinelli
174: Young
184: Downey
197: Warner
285: Stoll

I see the potential of 4 finalists in this lineup, and 9 AA's. I will admit I am looking at the optimistic side and best case scenario but if everything goes right this team could compete for a title.

But they all CAN'T say yes, and that's the problem.

When....and I say when because it's going to happen but when VT is still in the game at halftime and the crowd gives them a standing O as they enter the lockeroom, does that mean it will be an impressive show for the recruits?
How'd that work out for ya?

Because VT can't afford all of them, and they all know that...so it prevents any "Fab 5" fever....

No it doesn't...you get a bunch of excitement in your program and these kids starting to think about "going to VT with these other hammers and having fun together winning titles"

How is that? Most of the crowd was driving home when the 4th quarter started, compared to our recruiting weekend where it went down to the last second.
I've read you're stuff so I know you're not stupid. You said it would be 35-0 at the half and the fans would boo them as they left the field. You weren't even in the ballpark. Come on now... do we really need to argue about this?

Listen buddy, who you calling "not stupid !" - Sans, grab your kids and meet us off the bypass in Cedar Falls, we gotta school this noob.
Okay, so it wasn't 31-0 at half, it's my teams board, it was hyperbole, so there's that, but as a rival for a recruit, it turned out pretty good for us, you must admit. Crowd was silent most of the game (as noted by Herby several times during the broadcast) and the seats were emptying out as the 4th got under way. The most impressive thing that could have happened would be a tight game coming down to the last drive with the crowd screaming every minute. That didn't happen.
On a positive note, the pregame wave to the Iowa Children's hospital was touching and a classy gesture from the VT fans.
