What is a more impressive feat. 5 National Champs or 8 AA's placing top 3(the other 2 placed 6th and R12)?

Didn't PSU also have 5 NCs one year? That makes me think the other is more impressive.
I think the 8 in the top 3 and the other placing 6th and rd12 is more impressive. IF I remember correctly, the rd12 guy was a returning NC. Is that correct?

No on PSU. 5 finalists, 3 champs.

It was Oklahoma State with the 5 champs - Espo, Hendricks, Pendleton, Rosholt and Mocco

I believe Okie State matched it . Hendricks, Pendelton, Rosholt, Mocco, Esposito

(sorry, was typing while Gantry was posting)

5 titles. Hands down. Half the team are the best in the country.

Think about winning the team titles with 10AA and no champs. Great to win the title
But rings empty without one or two champs.

Individual titles are what it is about.

Google is not my friend.

What did Iowa's other wrestlers place in their record breaking year? TIA

And FWIW 8 top 3's in this day and age would be awesome to watch, considering you can watch every match.

Sloe......this indeed validates your name! ;)

Then again it may reference gin, which might make you slow.

Thanks for the correction PSU Mike.
If someone else has had 8 in the top 3 and another placer plus a rd12 guy then I could see the 5NC being more impressive. That is the only reason I thing the 8 is more impressive, because in my mind, it hasn't been repeated.

May be D3, but if we're talking impressive feats don't forget Wartburg in 2003. 10 AA, 6 finalists, 3 champs. (8 in top 3)
125 - Champ
133 - 2nd
141 - Champ
149 - 3rd
157 - 2nd
165 - 4th
174 - 6th
184 - 2nd
197 - 3rd
HWT - Champ

Followed by 2004 also with 9 AA's, 7 finalists, and 4 champs.
125 - 5th
133 - 2nd
141 - Champ
149 - Champ
157 - 2nd
165 - DNP
174 - 5th
184 - Champ
197 - Champ
HWT - 2nd

Eff Google, I'll be your huckleberry!

Hawks in 1997, Placement Points were: 16-12-9-7-5-3-2-1. Also, there was a 'Match Termination' win like today's Tech Fall (win by 15+), but it was worth only 1 Bonus Pt, same as a Major; affected McIlravy & Williams once each. Pins were 2 Bonus Pts.

118: #6-seed Jesse Whitmer, Champ, 22pts (2 Bonus)
126: #4 Mike Mena, 2nd, 18pts (2 Bonus)
134: #1 Ironside, Champ, 23pts (3 Bonus)
142: US Kasey Gillis, 6th, 13pts (6 Bonus)
150: #1 McIlravy, Champ, 23pts (3 Bonus)
158: #1 Joe Williams, Champ, 26pts (5 Bonus)
167: #11 Mike Uker, 5th, 12pts (4 Bonus)
177: US Tony Ersland, R12, 3pts
190: Lee Fullhart, Champ, 24pts (3 Bonus)
275: Wes Hand, R12, 6pts (4 Bonus--1MMF)
Totals: 38 Adv Pts, 32 Bonus Pts, 100 Placement Pts = 170pts
5 Champs, 6 Finalists, 8 AAs, 2 R12's

Couple years ago I charted that b/c I was curious just how PSU 2012 managed to be 27pts behind that record:
2012 Lions, Placement Points were/are 16-12-10-9-7-6-4-3
125: #10 Nico, 2nd, 18pts (1 Bonus)
133: US Martellotti, R24, 1pt
141: DNP Pearsall, 0pts
149: #1 Molinaro, Champ, 23pts (2 Bonus)
157: #7 Alton, 3rd, 15.5pts (1 Bonus)
165: #1 Taylor, Champ, 30.5pts (11 Bonus)
174: #1 Ruth, Champ, 27.5pts (7.5 Bonus)
184: #6 Wright, 2nd, 21pts (4 Bonus)
197: US McIntosh, R24, 2pts
285: #6 Wade, R12, 4.5pts (1.5 Bonus)
Totals: 35.5 Adv Pts, 25.5 Bonus Pts, 82 Placement Pts = 143
3 Champs, 5 Finalists, 6 AA's, 1 R12, 3 Holes

Even with the 12 extra Placement Points and the extra .5 Bonus Pts on the possible scoring table, it's insane what it's gonna take for somebody to approach the 97 Hawks. You need balance with no holes--and a hole has to be defined as R16 or worse. You need at least half your team to be the best in the country. And you need Bonus from errrybody.

And for your 'TIA' you get a Chael Sonnen 'You're welcome!'
Peace!

5 national champs is truly amazing. Still, and there is no doubt that wrestling is a different kind of team sport, having 8 guys in the top 3 is crazy to me. Add in a 6th place and a r12 and how does any team compete with that. I am admittedly a bigger fan of duals deciding team champs and as a result that type of overall depth impresses me more. Nearly every guy on the team had similar value and that, to me anyway, makes for the best team!

So, if I've done the math right, Iowa would have scored 5.5 more points with that performance simply due to the new scoring system.

I once did the math like this looking at the 2001 championship that Minnesota won mainly due to the depth of it's team: 10 AA's, but no champs. Under the new system, which was introduced that year, Minnesota beat Iowa by 13 points. Under the old system, they still would have won, but by one point.
