Snakes

Yea, I’ve started seeing more and more slithering in front of the mower so now I keep a close lookout. I’ll stop and catch them and put them under my deck.

At least rattle snakes let you know when your pissing them off. Back in my college days in NM, used to see a lot of Diamondbacks...I was always impressed by the size of their head...it’s huge.
Had a buddy there who was a real life cowboy. He once got bitten on the forearm by a baby rattler one day as he was riding fence. He had a large hunk of forearm affected and permanently damaged. He used to complain about it aching and feeling “frostbite” when it got cool out. Some of those rattlers really go big, too...8-10 foot....with a big ol’ head.

Jim Stafford, a forgotten hero.

That song was mostly written by David Bellamy, of The Bellamy Brothers. Stafford modified it & added to it, then had a hit with his recording of it. The connections developed from the song and working with Stafford (David's brother Howard was Stafford's manager for awhile) helped get the Bellamys their first recording deal.

Read once that there are 2 fears that humans are born with, snakes and heights. If you don’t fear these you have taught yourself to overcome them.

Saw a decent size Gartner snake mowing last week. Was able to step on back of his head and pick him up. Always enjoy trying to scare the kids or mrs (no pics)

Snake wrangler since I was a kid. Been hit a few times by rat snakes but I’m a lot more careful with rattlers and copperheads. Had a pet black widow when I was in college and caught one inside at work this year ...a bit rare to see one inside.

Not sure why, but there are more snakes in my yard than in previous years. I’ve gone entire summers without seeing a garter snake. I’ll bet I’ve seen at least 20 of them over the past two months. They tend to hang out near my Koi pond and retaining wall.

I fuggin hate snakes. I was doing some yard work a few years ago, raked a bunch of leaves on a Saturday. It was getting late in the day so I left them to pick up the next morning. The first pile I pick up, a snake strikes as I’m picking them up. It was just a garter snake, but then that didn’t really occur to me when it was 6’’ from my face. If a neighbor had a camera, that shit could have been on funniest home videos. A pile of leaves thrown up in the air and me running to the garage to grab the rake. CSB.

I saw some sort of rattle snake at Bos Landen Golf Course (Pella) in like 2010. It was curled up on the tee box and I went over to it thinking it was just some dumb not harmful midwesten snake and it started rattling. WTF.

I'm glad you didn't catch the deads.

I'm not sure "many" is the term I would use, but they aren't' incredibly rare from my understanding. Timber rattlers can be found in far NE Iowa in the rocks of Yellow River State Forest and similar areas. A good friend in the Van Meter area in Central Iowa is an outdoor enthusiast and claims a presence in that part of the state as well. I do know they are reclusive and sightings by happenstance are uncommon.

Grew up just southwest of Van Meter in Madison Co. and I can attest to the fact that there were plenty of timber rattlers there when I was a kid (80's).
