Where to start, coach? Let’s start with the number of tournament games Fran has won at Iowa. That would be three, not two. Iowa is 3 for 4 in their first round games of the NCAAs. Their one opening rd loss was to Tennessee in OT, in a play in game. Tennessee of course advanced to the Sweet 16 after that. Still basic knowledge most Iowa fans knew, I thought.
Connor averages 4 RBIs on the year? Pretty impressive even for two sport athlete and one being baseball or baseketball. Not sure, coach. Against NW Connor had 5 Rebs and 5 Assists (1 TO) in 24 mins. Okay. Wieskamp had 5 Rebs and 0 Assist (1 TO) in 27 min. Garza, POY, Mr Garza, 6 Rebs and 1 Assist (1 TO) in 34 minutes.
Connor didn’t shoot in the NW game? That’s weird because I remember Connor having to force at least two three point attempts when the shot clock wound down under 5. (Still a common trend with these guys. Giving the ball to Connor when the shot clock is expiring.) The stat sheet says Connor is credited for 4 shot attempts, but you say zero...... so I don’t know which to believe.
You list stats from the NW game and then say Joe T is Iowa’s only true PG. I like Toussaint and I won’t bad mouth any Iowa player. I’m just not sure the NW game is the one to be singling out. Not Toussaint’s finest game before getting hurt and missing the entire second half. The kid who you claim isn’t a PG (yet starts there) went: 24 points, 5 Rebs, 5 Assists (1 TO) .667% 3 point range, .636% fg, and 4-4 FTs.
So in closing, about half of your information is correct. You asked “what am I not getting?” You claimed to have coached many years in the HS ranks, and you don’t see what a guy like Connor brings to a team? I find that nearly impossible, to be quite honest. Unbelievable, really. Connor knows four positions. Probably knows the five too, really. He’s a coach on the floor. He’s played with a concussion. Hit in the nuts and throat. Scraped across his forehead that left a scar for several months. He’s tough as shit and doesn’t back down to anyone. If really nothing else, he has (as you said) an excellent assist to TO ratio and the BEST big man in the country on his team. He’s about one of maybe three players on this team that can get your National Player of the Year the basketball. Iowa doesn’t need Connor to score or to hunt shots. They have four pretty good scorers in the starting lineup already. If Connor tried to score more, I guarantee you’d be the first one on here bitching about why is Connor shooting so much with a lot better shooters on the team. It’s pretty clear to most that if Connor’s last name was Smith or Jackson, you’d be on here raving about him.
