So are you morons happy now?

Diversity of thought is OK. I don't agree with everything I read and I am 100% sure that others think some of my comments are nuts, but that is OK. I am not condoning anything malicious said about players or coaches but I like reading comments from posters, regardless of their take, if they can articulate their position. We all watch the same game and come away with similar / different thoughts on what is needed. We aren't claiming to be better coaches than Fran or more talented than any of the players we just have opinions and want to share them.

If you feel the need to post after every win that all of us who think the defense needs to be better or this player needs to play more / less are morons then knock yourself out. I can disagree with your take without calling you names.

Excellent post. We have become an uncivil society. Among other manifestations is the creation of the Keyboard King Kong. Its easy to insult people or attack them from the security of anonymity. The other is the lack of respect for differing opinions. American youth have been taught a simple dialectic: "I'm right because I believe I'm right and you are Hitler if you disagree". Social media's atomizing and isolating effect is accelerating the end of civility.

Slaughtered a top 25 team. Bohannon was a sniper. Minnesota will probably be top 15 after their total destruction of Michigan St.

Is everyone who was preaching that the world is ending after the minnesota loss and that bohannon needs to be benched/fran needs to be fired/this team is awful...going to admit you were wrong?

Probably not. But it'd be a lot cooler if you did.

Most likely the same dumbasses who were complaining when Keegan murray was signed. And he looks like a bona fide superstar in the waiting now.
While I mostly agree, it is OK for fans to be pissed about the Goofer game. The players were probably even more pissed to not take a road win that was there for the taking.

Garza said in his interview after the win against NW that he was the most pissed he's ever been after a loss.

Yes, but the attacks on players tend to get very malicious after a loss or if they have a bad game. XYZ player sucks, bench this guy, this guy is terrible, etc. It gets old reading the constant complaining and overreactions.

Same thing happens on the football board. I mean, did you see that place after Hawks dropped 2 close games to start the year 0-2?

Slaughtered? 15 point win is not a slaughter, but to the immature mind it might be. Your reaction after one win is as bad as those after one loss. Your topic header and opening post reek of ignorance. But, I did see you got nearly 20 likes. Stupidity must love company........

Did you see how Minnesota did against Wisconsin today? If not, check it out. I stopped watching with about 3 minutes left, but at that point the Badgers were leading by about 20, and it was doubtful Minny would reach 50 points--for the game--after putting up 83 in regulation vs. Iowa, 102 in OT. Just sayin'. ;)

So me people on here are correct. We will never win a Big 10 title with Fran. He has a losing Big 10 Record. His highest finishes: we tied for 3rd twice. I believe we have won 2 tournament games in his tenure. I will give Fran some credit though. He got us back to some respectability after the program was at an all time low. But we have been mediocre at best. Here are Connor’s stats. Stats for all games this year. 23.8 minutes played. 4 RBI’s per game. 4.5 assists. 3.3 points. 34.5 fg %.
He played 34 minutes in the Minnesota game. 3 points, 2 RB, 6 assists. Northwestern played 24 minutes. Did not shoot. Had one free throw. 5 RB, 5 assists. What sm I not getting? Other than an excellent assist to turnover ratio, there is no way those stats justify his number of playing minutes. That is a reason we won’t win. Big 10 title under Fran. We have one true point guard who plays. (Joe T). And he his getting very little playing time. Play the right players Fran and give us an opportunity to win (especially close games).
Since Joe T. is so great please post his stats for the year. Points per game. Assists. rebounds. Free throws. and assists to turnovers. Thank you...Throw in 3 point percentages..

The OP does realize he's doing the same thing that the people he's complaining about do?

Wisconsin playing bad defense would likely be better than Iowa playing good defense. Based on what I have seen thus far, Wisconsin and Michigan are the two best teams in the conference. If you haven't seen Hunter Dickinson for Michigan you are missing out. Dude is unreal for a freshman. Also really like the Columbia transfer Mike Smith. He is the PG Fran doesn't have (again).

Where to start, coach? Let’s start with the number of tournament games Fran has won at Iowa. That would be three, not two. Iowa is 3 for 4 in their first round games of the NCAAs. Their one opening rd loss was to Tennessee in OT, in a play in game. Tennessee of course advanced to the Sweet 16 after that. Still basic knowledge most Iowa fans knew, I thought.

Connor averages 4 RBIs on the year? Pretty impressive even for two sport athlete and one being baseball or baseketball. Not sure, coach. Against NW Connor had 5 Rebs and 5 Assists (1 TO) in 24 mins. Okay. Wieskamp had 5 Rebs and 0 Assist (1 TO) in 27 min. Garza, POY, Mr Garza, 6 Rebs and 1 Assist (1 TO) in 34 minutes.

Connor didn’t shoot in the NW game? That’s weird because I remember Connor having to force at least two three point attempts when the shot clock wound down under 5. (Still a common trend with these guys. Giving the ball to Connor when the shot clock is expiring.) The stat sheet says Connor is credited for 4 shot attempts, but you say zero...... so I don’t know which to believe.

You list stats from the NW game and then say Joe T is Iowa’s only true PG. I like Toussaint and I won’t bad mouth any Iowa player. I’m just not sure the NW game is the one to be singling out. Not Toussaint’s finest game before getting hurt and missing the entire second half. The kid who you claim isn’t a PG (yet starts there) went: 24 points, 5 Rebs, 5 Assists (1 TO) .667% 3 point range, .636% fg, and 4-4 FTs.

So in closing, about half of your information is correct. You asked “what am I not getting?” You claimed to have coached many years in the HS ranks, and you don’t see what a guy like Connor brings to a team? I find that nearly impossible, to be quite honest. Unbelievable, really. Connor knows four positions. Probably knows the five too, really. He’s a coach on the floor. He’s played with a concussion. Hit in the nuts and throat. Scraped across his forehead that left a scar for several months. He’s tough as shit and doesn’t back down to anyone. If really nothing else, he has (as you said) an excellent assist to TO ratio and the BEST big man in the country on his team. He’s about one of maybe three players on this team that can get your National Player of the Year the basketball. Iowa doesn’t need Connor to score or to hunt shots. They have four pretty good scorers in the starting lineup already. If Connor tried to score more, I guarantee you’d be the first one on here bitching about why is Connor shooting so much with a lot better shooters on the team. It’s pretty clear to most that if Connor’s last name was Smith or Jackson, you’d be on here raving about him.

Mike Smith? I thought that was Prince! (no offense to Prince fans, may he rest in peace, but that was the first thought that came to my mind when I saw him on the court!). Kid can play for a little fella.

Even though he's not a great defender its pretty funny to say that JBo is NOT a point guard when he'll leave Iowa as one of the all time assist players in history, and yes he passed BJ I believe who played with a lot of guys who could score the ball as well.

Someone else mentioned in another thread that most minutes should go to Garza, Weezy, and CJF. I’ll take that one step further and say this year that’s the Hawks team and the other spots are really best filled with the best matchups, shooting ability, defense, speed, rebounding or what’s neede in any particular game as it progresses.

Excellent post. My biggest complaint with Fran is that he is loyal / stubborn to flaw at times. Hindsight is 20/20 so if Iowa wins Fran pushed the right buttons but if Iowa loses we all become backseat drivers. When guys like Murray and Joe T. are rolling leave them in the game. Instead it seems that Fran has everyone on a clock and subs are made prescriptively IMO.

Murray has some compiled some crazy stats with pretty limited PT. It's still early and Fran is trying to figure out what different guys can do / not do but as the season progresses I think he needs to go with the most productive lineup based on the opponent and individual performances. Murray brings a lot on both ends and stands out as a player deserving of more minutes.

I thought Murray play quite a bit against NW, because of his stellar play.

Anyone thinking JBo is a point guard...well then go for it. He was 1/2 step slow 2 years ago...he’s lost another 1/2 step. Does he ever penetrate and dish? Have you seen him bring the ball up against TRUE point guards? Case in point.,,Gonzaga. So, Fran let’s have Connor help bring it up. Let’s go to plan 3 second half, Bring in Toussaint. Duh! Best player we had on the court. JBo is a 2 guard. He shoots. Two weeks ago everyone felt he should be coming off the bench with his shooting woes. One good game against NW and everyone is fine. I love JBo ....love his heart...love the way he steps up in big games. But he’s a liability handling the ball and defensively. I feel it’s a travesty Toussaint is only getting 10 minutes a game. As far as Connor, posters have said there isn’t a Big 10 coach who wouldn’t want Connor. That may be, but he wouldn’t be seeing 24 minutes a game with his stats. Ever heard of a role player? That’s what he is at best. Yes, he does a lot of good things that don’t show up in the stats. But it gets old hearing about his assist to turnover ratio. As a team, our assist numbers are incredible. We have plenty of players who are unselfish and can deliver the rock. And those players can also score and play defense, And those players will need someone to man up on them....not play 10 feet away while doubling up on Garza. Notice Garza is spending more time out on the perimeter? If you haven’t noticed, I bet all the other coaches have. Message on board in locker: Sag off McCaffery. Force him to shoot. Double down on Garza or help on backside.

Mostly a good thread, with most posters making valid observations. I'll speak in generalities that we should keep in mind. The Hawks have a lot of weapons, but so do most of the other B1G teams. Almost every other B1G team also has some really good coaches, who scout and game plan for the next opponent. I think Iowa has the players and coaches to win a lot more than they lose this year, but they won't win them all. Fans like to judge based on the most recent game, but we don't see practices, and most (myself included) don't fully understand all that is happening on both ends of the floor. Some guys just make the others around him better, but we don't see much in the basic stats behind his name.

The Hawks have a rotation that has been slowly evolving to include more Murray, and a little less Nunge and CMac. Hard to argue with that change. I expect there will continue to be more tweaks to the rotation, as the season moves along, as some combinations click more than others, but overall, I think it will stay basically the same. I like the 9-man rotation Fran is working with a lot. There are guys on the bench who could also contribute in games, but for now, are contributing by competing in practice. Everyone is making contributions, and some will show up more in the basic stats than others. Which combinations and allocations of time on the floor are best will depend a lot on the opponent and match ups. We will disagree with what Fran did at times for some games. He will make mistakes, when judged with hindsight, and at times, will be outcoached. Players will have great games, and some not-so-great games. Just remember that there are two teams on the floor, both doing everything they can to get a W...

We're a different team without CJ Fred. Simple as that. If we can't space with shooters around Garza, teams collapse on him and cover Jbo/Wieskamp and we can't make them pay.

Once CJ's back and we rip off a bunch of wins against the very good teams we have left, you'll see, my friend.

We made 8 3s today 38%, 14 against OSU 44%. We are shooting the 3 just fine even without CJ.. and still losing!!

100% agree with this. But how civil is it to post messages attacking 18/19/20 year old kids after every loss? A lot of times the attacks are very vicious. It is just insane, the negativity on this board after losses. "This guy sucks, that guy is weak, why this guy getting minutes?"

Man I hope no players visit this site although I'm sure they do.

This team has a problem playing defense, if the shots don’t drop, they usually lose. Defense wins championships.

I think the players can handle everything said about them. Got to be thick skinned when you get to this level.

We may never win the big ten with him, but he would be hired by another program immediately if we got rid of him. And they would be glad to take his sons in the process!
dis agree
