So let's talk Marquette

This is a game we need to win. They are young and while they have talent their defense is very suspect and they play like young kids. We should win this by 15

I don't think this is a game we "need" to win..its a game that we could win but 15 seems a little high considering it is on their floor and this is the 1st road game of the year.

November basketball is always a crapshoot. I won't be surprised if Iowa wins or loses and if the score is close or lopsided. It would however be a nice win to get. I bet Marquette ends up being a pretty good team by February and in the NCAA tournament resume building aspect of it this might end up being a "good win" especially since it's on the road.

In regards to previous comments about Woody-his defense is the least of my concerns. He can handle the 5* freshman. That is the strength he brings to the table. On offense I would take him passing every time he gets the ball except on uncontested layups. Missing a 2 footer 50% of the time is the frustrating aspect of his game-I like everything else.

Understand your point of view.......mine is coming from a perspective of winning games you should win and the schedule gets much tougher than this later on. We need every possible win in pre Big Ten as possible and this one is there for the taking.

Exactly, a freshman 3 games in. Not in the least worried about Woody on D. Hes already proved he can hold his own against better players than this.
I'd like to know who these better players are that Woody has held his own against. Maybe you haven't seen Ellenson play yet. He looks pretty damn good to me. He seems to be able to play anywhere on the court. I'm not sure Woody will be guarding him though. He's not their center so I expect it to be a combination of Uthoff/Uhl/Wagner. Woody will have his hands full with Fischer. I'm thinking a zone might be the best idea for Iowa.

Can't say what's going to happen down the road for Marquette but we can certainly beat this team on Thursday night. This gives Fran a chance to practice how to attack that UM zone because their man to man really sucked. and we match up a hell of a lot better than IUPUI. But it is BB so you never know how the ball is going to bounce or how teams will play?

I'd like to run up and down the floor and see if Ellenson and Fisher can stay up with a very fast pace. Fisher hardly came out of the game and IUPUI missed a TON of 3s tonight.

Looking forward to Thursday night.....
Sounds like it is good that we are playing Marquette early in the season. Freshman make lots of mistakes. Should be a tough road test, but I like our chances against an inexperienced team with only a couple of games against second-tier teams under their belts.

This. We need to win this game to "boost" our resume for the dance. marquette while they are young, they will pull off some upsets in the Big East this year and that will helps Iowa RPI. Need to win this one and FSU. Those two wins will help (not counting on beating ISU or winning in orlando).
So this game becomes important.

with Jok back it will be interesting to see if Uhl starts & for who

Uhl and Ellingson certainly made lineups and minutes interesting. As have Wagner, Jones and Baer. Frankly, the contributions from the new guys have come much sooner than I expected. A very good sign for the season ahead.

And. a what if....

Ellingson just might be the kind of player who wants to show his home state schools what they missed.

Strange game. Marquette shot 18% from the 3 but 83% from the FT. Ellenson didn't shoot well but went to the line a bunch. I wonder if we see Wagner on him at some point, given their history. I'm thinking Woody doesn't guard him, as he is more of a combo PF than a center from what I can tell.

It is good we are playing Marquette early and I also think maybe better for them too. I think this Iowa team has loads of potential to get better on both ends of the floor as a whole with their younger players just like Marquette's but the difference is we have four quality senior starters with a load of experience plus Jok and Dom who after the other night, I can see Dom's game turning into a special player for us. A 6'8"/6'9" player who plays better on the perimeter taking defenders off the dribble because he can and Dom was 3-5 from the 3 pt line the other night. Knocking em down.

I think as players like Dom, Brady, Jones, Fleming and Baer get more PT and comfortable being out there in crunch time...our 3 pt shooting with Jok and Jarrod with Mike and Sapp will be a REAL strength with this team. Certainly could/should be Advantage Iowa on Thursday night.....we'll see?

Hopefully their shooting will be on.
As noted multiple times, this is a team with limited inside offense.
On the defensive end, Woody needs to stay out of foul trouble. Uhl will be needed, I suspect Wagner as well.
They can't cede the rebounding margin. Someone has got to step up and make it his priority to hit the boards.

Ellenson has talent and his team did him no favors...but he got taken to school tonight by bigger and more experienced players

Anyone else notice how bad the Marquette jerseys looked with them rolled down and the long drawstrings hanging out.

A lot of guys roll the shorts (Gesell), but that was a bad look. I liked the Jordan jerseys but didn't like that. Maybe they need some shorter shorts

Cody Zeller, Adrian Payne, Frank Kaminski off the top of my head.

Ellensen has skills but needed better gaurds around him.

Iowa was on fire from the field obviously.
Was very surprised at how poorly Marquette played. They were brick layers from the field, but appear to have some athletes. They will need to step up dramatically to avoid being demolished in the big east.
