So, took the day off. Watched a lot of b-ball. No teams starting 4 white guys. Team starting 4 white guys=NIT; starting more black guys=NCAA.

Just reporting the facts from an eventful day. Discuss amongst yourselves.

If only there was a transfer portal for encouraging 'fans' to cheer for someone more to their liking - which in curtisj's case, would be a team that is always full of the best athletes around that apparently is also a team that NEVER loses and has never lost a game since they started competing over a century ago ....

I would flirt dangerously with bankruptcy to donate to that NIL fund.

Boston Celtics in their hay days were mostly white. Just stop with the black/white thing.
1. It’s heyday.
2. The Celtics won multiple titles in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Is that what you’re referring to when you say “hay days”?
3. I get his shtick is getting old, but bringing up the Boston Celtics from 40-60 years ago is probably not the best way to counter his point. Since Bird, McHale, and Ainge moved on, the Celtics haven’t come close to having 3 white guys in their starting lineup. And the last time the Celtics won a championship (2008), all five starters were black.

Really? How many SWAC teams made the tournament? MEAC? I would guess that those teams are predominantly black….so why do they suck so much?

I don't get people's obsession with race. Why does it matter? Seems like it's a thing pushed by weak minded people (politicians and internet trolls) to create a narrative or to stir the pot.
Because in basketball success, there’s a STRONG correlation between race and NCAA success. 90 of the top 100 high school b-ball players every year are black. Pretty easy to find that correlation.

I find it funny that people act shocked when people suggest that being a white team equates to being less athletic. "Why does race matter?!" You guys know better if you're being honest with yourselves. Come on now.

That doesn't mean a white team can't have skills (shooting, passing, ball handling, etc.) but I for one am ready to see an Iowa team that is quick and athletic, for a change.

The problem isn't just color, it's that we are in a state that produces very little Black top 100 players. In the last 10 recruiting classes, the state has produced 2 top 100 Black Bball players from our state (Carton and Omaha). Foster just missing at 101. We also have no draw to want to come play in Iowa to Black players who live 100's of miles away from our state. It sucks, and we likely aren't going to every fix it.

Yes, I was referring to the old Celtic “heydays” when a mostly white team did quite well in the NBA. But if you want a more recent reference…Iowa started a mostly all white lineup of Garza, Joe W. CJ Fredrick, Bohannon, et al and they were a highly ranked team. On the women’s side, the Hawks start 4 white girls and are a number 1 seed. So, it’s more about a player’s skill level rather than color of their skin.

Stock answer: Doesn't seem to be a problem for Iowa State.

Right or wrong, political correctness aside, Iowa’s system of recruiting hasn’t been very successful over the last 30 years.

If the basketball program is to come close to the caliber of some of the teams Iowa had prior to 1992, there definitely needs to be a shift in recruiting strategies.

Regardless of race, too many scholarships have been wasted on kids who aren’t P5 talent. There’s been no difference maker at point guard in years and Iowa is almost always lacking in athleticism in comparison to their opponent. That has certainly been the case in the NCAA tournament.

It’s a good thing to have a couple tall, lanky shooters on the team to stretch a defense, but the majority of your roster can’t be comprised of those types of players. You need athletes at guard, tenacious rebounders and rim protectors in the post, and guys who can score off the dribble.

I want a coach who can bring in players who remind me of BJ Armstrong, Brad Lohaus, Roy Marble, Ed Horton, Kevin Gamble, Chris Street, James Moses, Val Barnes, and others I remember fondly from my childhood. I’m tired of wasted scholarships on mid-major talent like Riley Mulvey and Maishe Dailey. I’m sick of fans celebrating CMac’s leadership and post feeds or point guards who gave up more points in six years than he did shooting 3s (that’s great, though, that he amassed a bunch of assists thanks to the greatest scorer in Iowa basketball history). It’s that type of mentality that has led to 30+ years of basketball futility.

So, yes, curtisj/Roy may be abrasive in his delivery but he is not wrong in his messaging. Don’t tell me it can’t be done at Iowa. It has been many times before. Our friends in Ames have modeled the blueprint. It’s incumbent upon the Iowa AD to follow it and bring in a coach who is going to make Iowa relevant again and who will bring back interest and enthusiasm. None of that is going to happen with Fran McCaffrey. Ever.

The money is there. Beth just needs to have the stones to cut Fran loose and bring in a coach who can bring in real talent and make Iowa competitive again.

Not a good recipe for success.
What the Iowa team needs is a Chris Street type of rugged rebounded and emotional player. Oh wait, he was an Iowa kid, so I guess not. 😜

Actually, Iowa did start an all white lineup that year so Connor could be inserted in the lineup along with JBo. The starting 5 were: JBo, CJF, Joe W, CMac, and Garza. That’s not mostly all white. That is all white.

Secondly, Iowa got ran out of the gym against Oregon that season, marking another first weekend exit in the NCAA tournament.

So, try again.

Oh, and women’s basketball is a much different game than the men’s. And let’s be real: without the Pistol Pete of women’s basketball, that roster probably isn’t even a tournament team.

Oh, a Chris Street would definitely help this team. They need a hard-nosed rebounder down there in the paint in the worst kind of way.

Ray Thompson is another guy that comes to mind. Too bad he got ran out due to grade issues, but that was another terrific athlete that Davis brought in. Not sure who recruited Ray, but I guess that was when Bruce Pearl was still on staff.

Don't get me wrong.. I don't have anything against the guys on our team. I really like Freeman, Dix, Sandfort and Harding seems to have some skills so far from what I've seen - but I'm not gonna sugar coat it and be PC. I want to see more athleticism and quickness to complement those guys.

Yeah, BYU had a lot of guys resembling Iowa roster and they just got knocked out in 1st round by a nobody. Creighton is great on offense, but their defense is suspect.

The problem with having a team made up of mostly skinny, slow twitch/below the rim athletes is they don't have the lateral quickness to defend or the speed/hops/strength to go get rebounds. It really shows up on the defensive end, not offense as much.

I think Freeman and Dix are solid athletes and good defenders but I wouldn't call either of them above the rim players. Dix in particular is lacking strength. Krikke/Sandfort are below average athletes but at least Sandfort puts out maximum effort. PMAC athleticism is overstated + he is scared of physical play. Lack of athleticism is large part of why Iowa didn't make NCAA tourney and even if they did, they wouldn't go far. ISU is polar opposite in team makeup and coaching philosophy---they just blew out a S. Dakota team that Iowa probably would have had to fight to the end to put away.
