Soooo, are we cheering for the Buffs this weekend?

Is it okay to cheer against a fellow B1G team in pre-conference games?

  • Yes, but only for Nebraska ...and maybe Minnesota while the boat rower is at the helm

  • No, at least not overtly, just keep saying you always want the conference to do well

My general rule for OOC games is root for other BIG teams against other power 5 games and root against BIG teams when they play fcs or G5 teams... the upset is too good. I was rooting for Utah state and Appalachian state this weekend but was rooting for Maryland against Texas. I tried rooting for Michigan against Notre dame but will admit I took pleasure in their loss, and I hate Notre dame.

For nebby vs Colorado I might break my rule, there's no way of knowing until game time. It's a gut thing.

I just about always cheer against our fellow conference teams unless they play someone I really hate like Notre Dame. I get the argument to cheer for them, but I cant bring myself to cheer for Ohio State, Michigan State, Neb, Minny, etc. And I dont blame them for not cheering for Iowa.

I was cheering for MD over the horns, but I work with an absolutely awful Michigan fan who, without provocation will verbally vomit Michigan all over you so I take great delight when they get their asses beat. I work in Nebraska daily so I hate everything Husker and their pain for the last 5 years has been SO satisfying. They haven't even brought up the 90's for the last 2 years. I think it's too painful for them.

Yall make us seem obsessed with Nebraska. Definitely some little bro syndrome around here.
Not at all. I also don't root for PSU, MSU,
or OSU. They are all cheaters and reprehensible, and Nebby fans are often intolerable and some of them are in my family. Therefore I don't root for Nebbie ever either. I also never root for Clown U, and that certainly has nothing to do with any syndrome. Just because you don't feel the same way, doesn't mean that your thinking is correct and everybody else is wrong.

big 10 had a pretty crappy showing week 1, hard to root for braska but hard to root against b1g right now

I want every Big 10 team to lose every week, except for Iowa. I used to buy into this line of thinking that overall conference strength will benefit the Hawks in some tangible way, but overall I think it's a load of bunk.

Win the games on your schedule and everything will work out. I don't want to rely on other teams in the conference to make arguments for the validity of the team I support. Winning solves everything in that regard.

Go Hawks!

If you ever want to see the hawks in the cfp, you better hope the teams we beat win their ooc games. Otherwise we're not getting in.....

Maybe. We've whipped Nowledge U for the last three years, which is good, but it doesn't seem to be enough. Hopefully the Cornholers will beat Colorado Saturday. Then when Iowa beats UN we can brag, "Hey, they beat Colorado!"

Where did I single you out? Idgaf who you cheer against and why. Maybe take your own advice, Chad. The Nebraska obsession is defintely there, read through the last 100 pages of thread titles.

Iowa fans do want to beat Nebby and have had fun in their last two visits to Lincoln. I hope Iowa fans are as friendly in this year's nebrASSkicking.

To embarrass UN further I suggest a spelling contest between the two teams.

Pac12 looked even worse than any of the P5 conferences. The Big10 looked good overall (Thank You Maryland), except some of the Traditional powers in the East were really shaky, but survived.

Purdue lost, but looked very good to me. Michigan lost because they had their heads up their asses for the first half. And, ND looked to be a pretty good team, even though I really root for anyone who is playing against them.

The emergence of the bottom of the league (even lowly Illinois) has helped. There looks to be as much parity this year as any I can remember.

I believe the Big 10 to be stronger, Top-to-bottom than any other conference.

I disagree. 2015 we get in if we hold off MSU. ISU did not make a bowl and Pitt. only won like 6-7 games. Nebraska lost to BYU & Miami, Wisconsin blown out by Bama, Purdue lost to VT and Marshall, Minny lost to TCU, Illinois lost to UNC, Indiana only power 5 win vs Wake Forest, Maryland lost to WVU and Bowling Green. Only team with really good win was ironically NW beating Stanford that year.

Anytime mentions SOS or our non conference schedule I always think back to this season and it proves if we go undefeated and win conference title game Iowa will make college playoffs.

You forgot that "they" would have beat Akron if the Lightning Gods hadn't messed up their dream game.

If Iowa goes undefeated and wins the Big Ten Championship game (especially against an OSU, PSU, Michigan, or MSU) in a given year, I can’t picture very many scenarios where they miss the playoff regardless of how the other teams in the Big Ten West do in their non conference.

I will continue to cheer against Iowa’s rivals until bowl season

So, you'll cheer for the other teams when it has zero chance of impacting Iowa but not when it could?
I don't get that......

And I disagree with you :).
If you think that NW beating Stanford and MSU beating OR had nothing to do with our shot in 2015, then so be it. Take away those two wins and I highly doubt we would have had a shot over Stanford.
OOC of your conf can definitely matter.

Right or wrong since the games are exhibitions, but I feel like a lot of people form perceptions of conference strength off the bowl games.

Example: I’d like to see Ohio State go 0-12. Every year. But if they go undefeated in the Big Ten and then lose by 30 to Washington in the first game of the CFP, I have to spend until next football season hearing how down the Big Ten was. And to be fair, I don’t go out of my way to cheer for other B1G teams in bowl games either. Last year it was pretty rewarding to see the Big Ten win all their bowl games... except for Michigan (LOL).

If I cheered for a non-P5 team like UCF then definitely cheer for the teams on your schedule in their other games. I just feel like Iowa controls its own destiny in the Big Ten. We’ll probably agree to disagree

Enormous if there.... schedules like 2015 are rare. But if we go 13-0 I'm ecstatic no matter what committee thinks of the bten. I think only way to go 13-0 and not make it is if you play a super weak, non p5 schedule like central Florida did

Only difference is UCF didn't get curb stomped in their bowl game.
