Our bench is pedestrian, yet Patrick McCaffery practices with the team, goes to road games, practices there, looks like he could play and help this team, yet sets on the bench instead of helping this team. It's not like he needs to play 20 minutes a game but just having another body to put on the floor could make a world of difference.
In past years Iowa has folded because either the starters ran out of gas or no one from the bench came through with additional scoring or defense.
If Patrick is really having stamina issues, why is he even practicing? Doesn't that take something out of you putting effort going against the starters?
He's already older then most freshmen usually are, so having him taking a medical redshirt doesn't make sense to me. Oh well, at least I got this off my chest.....

I assume you saw the video of Patrick running off the court at the morning shoot around, right,....he doesn't look like someone that has stamina or playing issues to me.
I also understand Fran is in charge and has made the decision not to play him again this season. So stop with your BS wisecracks....

At this point in the season with virtually no court time under his belt I'm highly skeptical that he would be able to contribute even if he didn't have ongoing issues with his thyroid.

I know you all are right, but having so little bench production, it really buts a lot of pressure on the starters and no matter how tough our players are, eventually fatigue well set in and it will be like ground hog day again as it was in 2014, 2016, and 2018.
Under Fran it's inevitable.....

You realize the difference between “running off the court at the morning shoot around” and playing an entire season in the highly physical Big Ten right? With some stretches that include three games in seven days?

I just want to make sure I have this right. You are saying that we should pull Pat Mccaffreys redshirt to provide bench strength.

It really doesn't matter, it is what it is. Maybe the starters will overcome the lack of a bench and maybe they won't.
Already we're seeing fatigue setting in with the players as Iowa's shooting percentage is falling off lately and at least in tonight's game the rebounding and defensive effort was not there.

If it doesn’t matter, then why bring it up?

The lack of depth matters to me, but I'm just a fan that can see where this train is headed....just ignore this old codger and stop adding to this post....pretty simple!
No problem, but considering that you are the one with terrible opinions, maybe you should be the one to stop posting in the thread?

yes, let’s play the out of shape sick kid to alleviate fatigue issues.

You sound fun

I would like to think intelligent Iowa basketball fans understand THREE players who were counted on to play significant roles are OUT for the year. To blame players who would have been deep on the bench is just plain wrong.

Weren't two of them almost 100% certain to be out at this point, and didn't we (or at least Fran and his staff) know that pre-season? I feel like we talked all off-season about how Bohannon would end up taking a redshirt year anyway, and presumably Fran knew Patrick's status a long time ago. So, in my opinion, the surprise injury is Nunge? Fredrick for a couple of games too, I know.

I'm not saying this could have been perfectly planned around, but I am saying that your post above is actually kind of odd given truly intelligent Iowa basketball fans (there are some) would have been able to tell you in September that Bohannon wasn't going to be on the team by the heart of the B1G schedule, and the coach should have been able to tell you his son wouldn't be available either. Could anything have been realistically been done to address it at that point is the issue to discuss, and maybe the answer is no.

I don't recall hearing conversations about Patrick in the preseason, I thought they actually sounded upbeat about him. Obviously, no one expected Nunge to go down, but JBo even trying to play was a shock to the system.

Most disappointing to me has been Bakari. I didn't expect him to be all-world or anything, but I thought 5-8 pts/game off the bench would be doable and would be huge for Iowa.

Patrick McCaffery was not a certain redshirt at the beginning of the season. It did, however, become clear fairly quickly that his stamina was not up to what was needed for the Big Ten.

Nunge was definitely a wildcard. He was counted on to make major contributions to the team.

Yeah, I totally agree here. Outside of Cincinnati, I feel like he's been a non-factor all season. Which seems odd given he scored (IIRC) double digits at Valpo, didn't he? I mean, yeah, B1G is a lot tougher and we've seen guys like Ellison go "down" a level or two and look great.

I think the cutoff for Patrick doing a medical redshirt vs spending a year of eligibility happened somewhere around the @Nebraska game,... He wasn't ready then, and at this point it makes no sense to bring him in anymore,.. Apply for the medical and start him up next year after he bulks up a little...

Why is he penciled in as a starter? I'd think that Nunge/Garza are the starting post players next year, with Toussaint/Bohannon, Wieskamp and Frederick at the guard positions. Heck, Connor is going to have a tough time starting next year.

I shouldn't answer for @Rifler but will anyway. I believe he is saying to start him up fresh and at peak health, not necessarily to be a "starter" per se.

Go back to two big guys? I certainly hope Nunge is not starting next year.

mstp1992 is correct,.. Patrick won't start but he'll play minutes..

If running off the court shows you have stamina, you must weigh 600 pounds.

Nunge won't start,... I see him taking Kriener's minutes provided he gets his game on track..

Yes we've never seen his game on track, although apparently he's good in the summer. Iowa will need a backup center next season, hopefully that's the role he plays (like you said, take Kriener's minutes).

This is also dependent on Garza's decision at the end of the season. If he jumps to the NBA our post players are Nunge, Pemsl (assuming he keeps playing), and Ogundele.

Possible, but I really doubt that Garza goes this year...

I can run off the court after a shoot around. No way in hell would I last 5 minutes of game time
