Sound Off Rips Fran

Least surprising part of that story, margaret being the one doing the heckling. Seems if you’re going to be a prominent family like them, you should grow some thicker skin! Not only did Fran not go out of his way to connect with fans, his family went out of their way to isolate themselves.

He said "Fran's character was an issue"????? WTF, did he graduate from Iowa State? F U Andy. compared to Izzo, Fran is calm cool & collected! Andy's just pissed because he & his buddies were snubbed. McCaffery's went thru personal hell between PMac's cancer & Jack's accident. The accident would force any public family close ranks. Imagine if this happened to yours...

Andy has lost a lot of respect after this piece IMO.

There are always 2 sides to every story. Keith, Hassel, and Andy all hated Fran after the Dolph incident. Oddly enough Hassel used to do skits making fun of Dolph all the time. Then Dolph met them and was very cool about it, despite them taking jabs and it won over their respect going forward. They took jabs at Fran every chance they can (some deserved), and stroke off Pollard every chance they get, while scoring free tickets to events at ISU all the time.
On a side note, Keith seems like a good guy. Andy is a pompous ahole. Left for St Louis, his hometown, couldn't handle being small man on campus and came running back. Hassel is kind of the worst. Huge Hawk, then got sucked into the ISU guys in Des Moines, and started making fun of Iowa whenever he got a chance. Now doing pretty good in Florida, after getting canned at ESPN, but is always making fun of his dad and posting stuff about him on social media for likes. Really bizarre behavior that he finds funny for some reason.

I've never seen a comprehensive listing of all of the sportsmanship issues put together like that. Some die hards will defend him no matter what, but you have to admit all of that stuff is very off-putting to the average fan who only pays partial attention to Iowa basketball, or the dual fans like me who support another team - but still generally want Iowa to do well. And you need those fans to help fill seats and generate community engagement.

The McCafferys were never a good fit for Iowa, and it lasted about as long as anyone could reasonably expect. 10+ years from now when you ask someone about Fran, they won't remember a single game he won - but will remember several of the blow-ups.

No. 3: An unforgettable rise to No. 3 in the national rankings

A senior class of Mike Gesell, Anthony Clemmons, Jarrod Uthoff and Adam Woodbury helped take the Hawkeyes to a new level in the 2015-16 season, which saw three unforgettable wins in a stretch of 2½ weeks lead to a No. 3 national ranking.

After a modest 9-3 nonconference campaign, Iowa opened Big Ten play at home against top-ranked Michigan State on Dec. 29, 2015, and rode Gesell’s career-high 25 points to the home victory. Perhaps more impressively, Iowa would rattle off a road win at Purdue four days later, 70-63, and at then-No. 4 Michigan State (this time with star Denzel Valentine healthy) in convincing fashion, 76-59. Peter Jok led the way with 23 points as Iowa snapped an 18-game losing streak in the Breslin Center.

No. 1: Four wins in four days to win the 2022 Big Ten Tournament

Keegan Murray set a Big Ten Tournament record (which still stands) with 103 points as McCaffery’s Hawkeyes went from the No. 5 seed in Indianapolis to hoisting the conference championship trophy behind a finishing 75-66 win against Purdue.

Was Dolph wrong about Maishe Dailey? Fran certainly was.

Fran had to go after the officials early in his time at Iowa, because Iowa was a punching bag for the top teams and the officials. He mellowed out later in his time as either the calls got better, or he just realized that Iowa was never going to get the calls and it wasn't worth the stress.

I believe Fales was a Drake grad.
Yes, was at WHO13 then decided to go work for the KC affiliate under ex Chief QB Len Dawson, which they didn’t see eye to eye on a lot of things so AF came back to WHO13 to work in multiple roles at the station, which he stills does.

I think it’s a click at WHO13 so that’s part of the equation with why there was no love lost between Fran with Murph, and Andy doing their jobs as journalists. Fran didn’t like to be questioned on his handling of the program and that’s a big part of the equation in why they didn’t like each other.

This league was run for too long by Izzo, Matta, and Bo Ryan bullying the refs into calling the games how they wanted

A big part of the change in Fran was the cancer diagnosis with Patrick and the accident with his youngest son. Those things will make you reassess a lot of things in your life.

In the end, it will be good for Fran and family to go to Indianapolis to watch Jack play as well as Caitlin, and Connor coach. It might not seem like it to the McCaffrey’s now, but before long, they will recognize it too. The change to Indy will do them good.

This is bull crap, my whole family has photos with Fran and I have a great photo of my Dad and I with Dr. Tom. Both men were easy to approach and kind, and enjoyed fan engagement. Can’t say the same with Lick or Alfraud.

Izzo stills does and rarely gets a T when overly deserved.

8 final fours and 11 B1G championships does tend to command a little respect from officials (and others).

When Fran is being a jerk, he's just being a jerk. When Izzo is being a jerk, he's also being a jerk but how can you not question in your mind, this guy seems to know what he's doing so maybe he has a point? It's just human nature.

Guys who knew how to 'work the officials'.
Gary Close mentioned in a recent "Hawkeye of the Storm" podcast that there's an art to working the officials. He said you've got to be honest, and you've got to pick your spots, among other things. I think Izzo and others are good at this art, but Fran never was.

Also, when your wife is flipping off the officials (I heard on another podcast that this happened) it doesn't do wonders for your team's ability to get calls.

I know people are kinda divided on Andy but Keith is pretty widely liked. And he doesn’t have an ego to have mentioned this from 2018. I had absolutely no idea and I’ve listened to their show forever.

It’s totally believable though.
Agreed. I like Keith but Andy comes off as a douchecanoe more often than not

Murph is very pro ISU. Used to be the ISU play by play guy way back in the day. He'll lie about it if anybody challenges him on his allegiance
When was Murph the play by play guy for ISU men's football and or bball?

i don’t think fran went out of his way to meet fans. Taking a picture when approached is different than actively going out to functions and looking to interact. Also not remotely BS the family isolated themselves, how many shots on social media did that family take at the fans?
