Sparty a three point favorite

Are you serious? You really seem to think this game is gonna be a cake walk huh, iowa can beat anyone or lose to anyone remaining on the schedule. This isn't going to be an easy game.
Well yeah, that's why they play the games.
You think MSU is more likely to win than we are?

I really like the psychological aspect of this. Iowa is coming off a heart breaking loss, and being an underdog to Sparty might just be what the doctor ordered for this team.

Just saying msu probably isn't as bad as you think and it's at there place. So can we win, sure, can we lose sure can unfortunately. Hopefully not though
Yes, as iowa fans we certainly know ANY game can be won or lost.
I still think it is ridiculous to give MSU the edge when you look at their b1g play last year and what both teams did this week. Neither team looked GREAT the first 3 weeks, so kind of a push there imo.

There is a lot of reacting on this board to the most recent thing seen.

Yes, the D somehow came up with more key stops against a superior opponent in one game than I can ever remember. They also were drilled up and down the field all game long to the tune of 500+ yards. This is the same D that looked completely lost against a mediocre at best isu. And they did look solid in the opener against what now appears to be a not very good wyoming team.
Meanwhile the O is almost a reverse of the D in their performance. Woke up and drove well against isu. OK, but not spectacular against wyoming and north tex. Mistake filled and ineffective outside of a handful of big plays last night.

There is no solid pattern established yet. Assumptions about what they might do in upcoming games is based on being hopeful, not on anything they've consistently shown.

Seems perfectly reasonable to consider this a pick 'em game, which is essentially what's going on as the home team typically is assumed to have a 3 point advantage.

Wow. Yeah a push and -3 for home field advantage.

yes lets just ignore the fact they managed 1 b1g win last year and got embarrassed last night while iowa lost in a last second play to top 5 team....

What does last year have to do with anything?

You said it was a push correct? They give the home team a -3 point edge for home field advantage. They're basically saying that if this game was played on a neutral field it would be a pick em. It's not, it's at MSU, which is why you're seeing -3 MSU.

I agree. Even Purdue looks to be much improved. Iowa historically plays inconsistent at times, no game is ever a gimme. I have faith though if the Penn St game didn't break their back ala Wisconsin '10.

I said first 3 weeks were basically a push, yesterday certainly wasn't
well most their guys weren't even good enough to play on their sorry ass team last year, so excuse me for thinking they ought to prove SOMETHNG

Interesting line.

Saw that PSU had 40-20 TOP and rushing yards they had almost 4x as many. As I was busy watching us shit the bed vs ND I didn't see your game.

Why did PSU need that last play? Stay line looks fairly ugly.

The Irish have a pretty good OL but they kind of pushed us around up front. Makes me nervous heading into Saturday.

PSU moved the ball between the 20's in open field easily, once field was compressed (red zone) Iowa's strength was more effective than PSU's speed.
Iowa had horrible field position pretty much entire 1st half and played extremely conservative ball, not that Iowa is ever going to wow you anyway.

This was a classic Iowa night game at home against a top 10 opponent. What that means is an ugly game by the stats in which Iowa looks thoroughly dominated on paper, but the bend but don't break D works as well as you could ask. They gave up yards all over the field all night long, mostly to one guy(Barkley). But then had key stops when needed most, keeping psu out of the end zone multiple times.
I have no idea what's going to show up for the game this weekend.

It's at MSU so they're basically saying it's a push.

winning at MSU has been problematic over the years. We're coming off emotional loss and MSU got stomped and angry. It probably comes down to offense...BF better not run Wadley into brick wall his 1st 18 times for 35 yards or we will lose.

If we go by point spreads, Iowa should have lost by 12 1/2 points last night.

This game is historically close. Why would it surprise anyone that the point spread is 3 essentially making it a push since it's at their place.

Msu's Offense and Defense are NOWHERE close to pSU.

We really aren't but once conference play starts throw out the on paper bs. Our best talent for the most part are 1st and second year players. Lewerke is a third year guy but broke his leg last season and it hurt off season growth.

We have two true frosh and two rs frosh in our top 7 for OL. Left tackle is third year guy first time starter. We have experience at RB but Scott can't hold onto ball. Our WRs are very talented.

Defensively we have good DTs but DEs are mediocre. Our LBers are ok. Secondary features a true frosh at one cb and a true soph first year starter at other. Safeties have problems vs top athletes over the top and in space.

We played 11 true frosh last week vs ND. I fear we will lose the los scrimmage battle this week and a costly turnover will lose us s close one 24-20.

Let's also not ignore series history. It's been a tight series over the years. We're not juggernauts. A win in EL is a great god damned win any time it happens. Hawks are gonna have to get off the mat and get to it immediately if they expect to beat the Spartans on the road.

this team struggled against north texas and isu. and lost to penn st . that's all we need to know. each game from here on out is going to be a battle.

Really? that's all we need to know?

why say struggled against North Texas and lost to Penn St.?

Why not "beat North Texas and lost to Penn St."?

Or , "beat North Texas and went toe to toe with number 5 Penn St."?

You can be as negative or as positive as you want to be I guess. You are correct though in saying this team will most likely have to battle week in and week out.

Heck, most weeks in the 12-0 season were a battle.......its just kind of how the Hawks are built it seems.

We all know this will be kind of a 'boring' game that ends up 20-17 or something.

We need to stop with the turnovers though.

Don't be. I'd say during the Dantonio era the games can go either way really. This year? I have no idea how it will go.

We get them by a TD if we get off the mat. One step slow and we get embarrassed in East Lansing. I want to see a pissed-off boat-racing spectacle. MSU is too good for that. They should be favored at home.

I think both teams will be fighting for their lives Saturday. It will be extremely tough for either team to achieve much this year with a loss Saturday.

Hopefully our young team got their 'deer in headlights' game out of the way.

Hey SpartanJD, serious question here, what was the reason for last year's huge dropoff from '15? Did MS go 3-9 in '16? Were there a lot of injuries or what?

The Hawkeye OL is a complete mystery these last couple of years. You just never know when they might come out and look like a Joe Moore Award winner, but to be honest most of us scratch our heads and say "I thought the OL was supposed to be great?"... pass protection has been a real bummer these last couple of years. Some say it is because (for most of 2016 anyway) the line is full of guards, but I believe with Jackson we now have at least one true tackle. Freshman Wirfs is another true tackle, but he's not fully-ready yet from what I gather.

There's too many reasons to talk through but we did get hit with injuries to our two top men on D early on and that didn't help. Throw in some sub par QB play and some lockeroom issues and thats a wrap.

Can't say I'm surprised by the spread. Felt this game going into the season would be a coin flip for us as it almost always is. I'm just glad we're not traveling to Kinnick.

Hear "rose colored glasses" are selling like hot cakes in Iowa City. As to who is right? I'll go with Vegas before message board predictors.
