Spencer interview w/ Jersey Jerry & KBnoswag of Barstool

I remember posts telling everyone that what you say on here can and will cost Iowa recruits. Spencer just said that the ridiculous things said on the boards by Hawkeye fans had an effect on him . So hopefully everyone remembers this in the future. Some of these athletes read this stuff just remember that

Its refreshing to hear spencer talk openly about the pressure. I remember clearly when Glory got teched and everyone on the boards said "man he looked great getting teched".

As others have mentioned he's still dealing with some stuff. If you're reading this spence - stop looking at the comments and the boards and the chat. the internet is a cesspool of armchair quarterbacks that loves to put anyone that experiences success down.

last - absolutely loved the F bomb at the end

Yeah, he definitely is worrying too much about things being said by cretins on social media. After watching that interview I can't help but think he is going to be in a better mental state wrestling freestyle - where he is basically just wrestling for himself and won't feel the need to perform for an entire state. I get the impression that as fun as it was wrestling for such an enthusiastic fanbase, he seemed to feel a lot of pressure to perform up to an impossible standard that we had set.

I realize wrestling freestyle you are representing the entire nation, but I think that - as he indicated - not as many people pay attention to freestyle so he won't feel the same kind of pressure. I hope he can get healthy and meet his remaining goals.

He will always be remembered fondly by Hawkeye fans, most of whom I believe will consider him to be the GOAT.

Agreed. Also, I think the comments about his mom affected him the deepest, and those were primarily outside of Rivals (Twitter, YouTube, etc.) Most of those folks aren't even wrestling fans and don't understand how deeply emotional the sport is compared to others.

Are you disappointed that he said it at all or that he said it in the interview?
Both. But I'm not going to get sucked into elaborating and starting one of THOSE thread hijacks. Disappointed is a good choice of words, but not in a judgmental way by any means.

That was the one thing I didn't like about it. I debated on whether to share it or not because of that.

I agree. It was out of character. He's hurting in a specific way that all of us just can't understand.

Say what?? If anything it shows he is in fact human and not a robot or PR machine.

Gimme a break. It was a free form podcast style interview. People say bad words, itā€™s gunna happen. Hell I bet my 5 year old swears behind my back.

The only complaint I had was the Skype style framing only showing whoā€™s talking. Iā€™m guessing we missed a few facial expressions as reactions to questions or statements because only one person was showing at a time. However being a barstool follower, I know this is one of those times portnoy said ā€œprove the show or idea will work then we will give you producers to make it betterā€ so JJ and KB were probably doing their best.

I agree in a sense that shit gets read by family members and wrestlers but Spencer was talking about all of social media. The narrative that he was a quitter was all over Twitter and Facebook. The reason why SL is in the spotlight is because he is who he is and a Hawk. This means he has a lot of supporters and will have a lot of haters if only because he is a Hawk. Also, he mentioned how even his techs (Glory) were dissected as him not looking the same and Glory looking good. That was pure Flo.

Yes, I think the staff, families, and wrestlers see a lot more on here than people think. It is a great place for information and has a huge Iowa fan base. Why wouldn't you look here if you were an Iowa fan? That is why I cringe at some of the stuff said ( especially on the football and really on the basketball forums). I get that it is a internet forum, but some people really have to filter. My advice would be if you won't say it in person, don't say it on the cesspool. Some just can't contain themselves. If every wrestler on the team read my posts, I would be fine with that. Some on here, I feel, not so much!

suppose a recruit is being shown around campus by abe assad. the recruit asks abe about iowa fans, i wonder what his response would be.

Letā€™s have some perspective. Every fan base has some knuckleheads who stay stupid things on message boards and social media. The loyal Hawk fans who support Abe and all of his teammates through thick and thin FAR outnumber the knuckleheads. Our guys canā€™t be thrilled to read any of the stupid comments from the small moran minority, but they know Hawkeye Nation has their backs.

I thought it was interesting he said he didnā€™t even know college wrestling was a thing until he was a freshman in high school. And for as many good wrestlers as they have, the sport of wrestling is much more of an afterthought in Pennsylvania.

Anyway, I hope he can finally get healthy at some point. I canā€™t imagine how terrible it must be cutting weight and then wrestling competitions with limited conditioning. I forget the name of the machine but I read an article last year that said for cardio workouts he had to rely heavily on what sounded like a bike that you pedal with your arms, which is supposedly really, really not fun.

I agree 100%. On the flip side, in today's world people also need to get better (nobody's perfect) at ignoring 'crap', have more humility/sense of humor, and be less reactive to everything said if you want to participate in social media of any form, lest you become exactly what you dislike. I mean, if I responded to or was affected by everything I dislike or diagree with on here, I'd need to quit my day job and see even more counselors than my wife says I need. Can't imagine my misery if I was also on Shitter, Fakebook, and Crapchat. Much less stressful listening to the 'gobblers' in the woods.

100%. I'm not on Shitter or Crapchat ( love it!). My wife has Fakebook and I spend about 5 minutes a week on it and that is all I can take. Lots of stuff from IA Wrestle show up which she asks me what the hell is this?! It has been full of Spencer bashing lately, which I won't tolerate so I just don't partake. Go Iowa Awesome is the extent of my social media and it can be great plenty depending on the day!

Thought the same thing. Pretty obvious Jacob Warner was also here.

It's an Airdyne, that is what everyone used back in the day. Now most use Rouge Echo bikes I believe, excellent for training but not being able to run and sprint is crushing to getting your lungs in shape. I wonder if he did any swimming, I would guess he did but still does not replace run/sprints

Surprised he wasnā€™t on a versaclimber. Those things are great when you want to kill yourself and make it look like an accident so the insurance company still forks over the payout.

As to the interview overall, it was one of few that I couldnā€™t skip (many I need to because I donā€™t pay). I think it was the right place so he could choose his words in a relaxed way. Obviously a lot of conflict between what he truly feels and what he wants out there, and thatā€™s fine. As members of society weā€™re expected to have some filters.

It really is pretty simple. If you can not train and condition the way you need to, which means running, drilling, live goes etc.... You will never be in peak shape. That is why it is really hard to comprehend what this kid did!

We now know he was never 100% while at IOWA. We all saw that he had a heavy brace on most of the time and at least some type of knee wrap all of the time. We also know that they tried their best to make a schedule to get work in as best as possible.

If you had a crystal ball and could look forward into the future when he was a freshman. MAYBE you do some things differently? Fact is, the kid PUT IT ALL ON THE LINE for the hAWKS!!! He step in as freshman when we needed him and got the job done even though it may have been best to redshirt for his knee?

From there on out, he was all in to bring a championship home, which he and his team did. It would have been 2Xs if not for the NCAA BS shutdown! He obviously could give no more!

Those who have wrestled for any period of time will fully understand. If you have dealt with any injuries, even minor, you get it. Trying to train through an injury and staying tough mentally when you know you aren't 100% but have to step onto the mat, is never easy. Doing it for your whole career, in the B1G Ten!!!!!

So we move forward, I am not sure what happens next? Does he wrestle in this next event? Would love to see it but I have my doubts. If he goes, I hope he dominates as he is capable of!!!!

I'm sure he can get to where needs to be in another month. He should not enter unless he is fully READY. I personally would like him to step back train for a full year and Crush everyone next year.

Agreed. Our Wrestlers need to focus on the 15k in the seats and not the frustrations of a few dozen message board posters. What Iowa has is incomparable to other schools so if student athletes donā€™t appreciate this benefit then itā€™s on them. Especially since other schools seems to have more posters than butts in seats.

It wasnā€™t that. I do CrossFit so Iā€™m all too familiar with both Airdybe and Rogue Echo Bikes.

I tried googling it and I think it might be called a physiotrainer. Itā€™s only arms, no legs.

In my 70s and still use my Airdyne. It's an awesome piece of equipment.

What is his path to the Olympics going forward if he cant go to the open and wrestle at final X?

Itā€™s hard to say anything bad about iowa wrestling. I wonā€™t do it. If you want to bring up Brian Ferentz, Iā€™ll rip him to shreds. One group is the best (second best technically) in the country right now. The other group led by Mr. 25 is the worst (second worst technically) in the country.
