Spencer Lee - Iowa Media Day Interview

I truly think him red shirting is the best thing for the team. But if he does redshirt through the season I hope it's also the best thing for him long term

But with that said, everything he says and does make me me gets me pumped up and wanting to see him wrestle more and more this year. But that is short minded and greedy on my part

GO HAWKS!!

Reading between the lines it sounds like he's not 100%, or even close; and definitely RS this season.

I saw someone (you?) post the other day about being greedy for wanting Lee and Warner to wrestle together for four years and now you think it’s being greedy to want to see him compete this season.

You just like that word or something?

Long day at the office trying to bring Subways' public opinion back up in America's perception. It pertains...
So Spence said he wanted too wrestle. Coach said it was his decision. Midlands hey.

Kinks we all got them
IaWrestle does an outstanding job btw

Would you prefer selfish?? :).

Point is, it would be easy for me to say I want them both to wrestle this year cause it would help the team and it would be fun for us all? That would short sighted. Maybe not selfish or greedy.

LOL I’d go with impatient.

The wrestling fan in me wants the kid to RS and come out next year healthy and give it a rip.
The PSU fan in me wants to see him in the lineup this year. Double edge sword. Possibly knocking NATO down a peg in the finish (taking OSU points away) and better to have him earning points this year than 5 years from now.

She likes me, no she doesn't. She likes me no she doesn't.

This year the Hawks are not going to contend for a title. I don't see the point in burning Lee's shirt this year before he's 100% ready to go. If he's not sure whether he's going to go or not, then it's decided he will go, I'm no sure if that's the best thing for his mental preparation. Next year we're looking like a title contender. I'm excited to see some individual Hawks shine, but there are a couple holes at 133 and 197 that are going to be tough to fill with AAs. We also need real good things to happen at 141 and 174 in order to AA there. I'm thinking realistically we get solid AAs at 149, 157, 165, 184 (with PD3 sigh) and a healthy Sam Stoll. Adding Lee to the mix would be exciting, but it doesn't make us a title contender.

Brands and athletes have said the decision is made based on what’s best for the individual athlete. If Lee isn’t 100% ready, he won’t. Stacking for next year for a “better” team finish doesn’t seem to be part of the equation.........except for some fans. Not sure why it’s taking some so long to realize this?

If he’s healthy and ready then let him wrestle, especially if he wins Midlands(Suriano). I think he’s going to redshirt in the 2019-20 season for the olympics fwiw, so that will be his redshirt year.

Edit: it’s an Olympic redshirt, not his actually redshirt.

Hearing from deep inside the room that he teched CC twice last week. I still think he goes, and I believe he wins it. Based on what I've seen, what I've been hearing and a dash of bias.
Have watched him with Corey and he does well fighting to hold his own but not all the way back to the point where he is beatng Corey by that much. Not yet anyway.

Right on. Perry must have forgotten how folkstyle scoring works. Honest mistake after seeing all that freestlye.

Since I was only there twice this week I’ll take your word for it. However, from what I have seen I would certainly take Corey at this point, if I had to bet. Spencer will, without question, be there very soon...very little doubt about that.

I don't buy that for a second. That is insane. Are we talking freestyle rules or folkstyle?

So Lee is going live goes with Cory Clark and beating him, yet all this talk of don't burn his redshirt and let him recover?

Um, wtf is the point of "letting him recover and redshirt" if he's going live goes with the defending national champ in the room.

That makes absolutely zero sense regardless of which side of the redshirt/don't redshirt debate you're on.

I’m pumped to see this kid go!!! Don’t care if he redshirts or not as I don’t really have a dog in the fight, I just can’t wait to see him perform at Midlands!

Going live in the room is not the same as a live match. I believe Gable said it takes 7 room matches to equal one live match.

Doesn't matter. Going live in the room for a hell of a lot longer than 7 mins is just as big of a risk for reinjuring the acl. Like I said, if he's wrestling (and beating?) Clark in the room as posters are saying, then there is no reason to use redshirt to avoid reinjuring his knee as an excuse.

If you're redshirting to avoid reinjuring the knee then he shouldn't be going live in the room.

I hope he goes this year.

Sam Stoll went live for a couple of months before retearing his ACL. He also tore it in a match not practice. Just because Lee is wrestling a little live does not mean he is ready for prime time. I'm still on the fence wether he should go or not if health for all the reasons discussed over the last few months.

Come on guys, none of you can really believe that, can you?? Lee is awesome, but TECHING last years champ, 8 months after ACL surgery, and up a weight!!

I completely believe it.....you have no idea, bro. Things slow down for this kid they way they used to for Joe Montana as he would scan a defense. It’s like being attacked by a sackful of cats and lightning.

FREE THE LEE.

You will have to wait. After I make my decision I will need to tell Spencer, Larry, and Tom. Then they will inform the rest of the world. Sorry, you are on the bottom of the list. Of course there is the very small chance Spencer Inc. won't care what my opinion is.

FWIW....Tom said in his presser that Spencer's workouts are controlled right now.

Maybe it was a controlled tech........

It's 100% live, but a coach is controlling the situations. If they get into a scramble or a situation that puts pressure on the knee then they just stop it. They are controlling situations. No need for the risk is what I've been told.

If you disagree with Dan Gable on wrestling in the room vs a match then by all means, go for it.

Lee isn’t going “live” in the sense that you believe he is. He’s also not teching Corey Clark anytime soon.

I'm not disagreeing with Gable. I'm saying wrestling one or two real 7 min matches a week is not more of a risk than live wrestling for 30 mins a day every day of the week in practice.

My entire point is that if you're worried about Lee reinjuring his knee and think he should redshirt this year, then he shouldn't be going live in practice.
